ABSTRACT

Metal forming of metals involves deforming of metal physically into various derived
shapes and sizes under the effect of externally applied forces. Flow forming is an
advanced, near net shape, chipless metal forming process, which employs an increment
rotary point deformation technique for manufacturing seamless, dimensionally precise
tubular and other rotationally symmetrical products.
Sheet metal spinning is one of the metal forming processes, which a flat metal
blank is rotated at a high speed and formed into an axisymmetric part by a roller which
gradually forces the blank on to a mandrel, bearing the final shape of the spun part.
Over the last few decades, sheet metal spinning has developed significantly and spun
products have been used in various industries. Nowadays the process has been
expanded to new horizons in industries, since tendency to use minimum tool and
equipment costs and also using lower forces with the output of excellent surface quality
and good mechanical properties. The automation of the process is of greater
importance, due to its wider applications like decorative households goods, rocket nose
cones , gas cylinders etc. This project aims to gain insight into the conventional
spinning process by employing experimental and numerical methods.
the spinning process is an advanced plastic working technology and is
frequently used for manufacturing axisymmetric shapes. spinning forming is continuous
and partial deformation, so it is very difficult to control the shape, dimensiond and
precision of the finished parts. because of high stress wave speed, propagation, the FE
analysis of spinning process is difficult. the software used is ABAQUS

INTRODUCTION
1.1. FLOW FORMING

Flow forming is an advanced, near net shape, chip less metal forming process, which
employs an incremental rotary point deformation technique for manufacturing seamless,
dimensionally precise tubular and other rotationally symmetrical products. Compression is given
to the outside diameter of a cylindrical preform, attached to a rotating mandrel by a combination
of axial and radial forces using a set of rollers that are simultaneously moved along the length of
the rotating preform. These loads when it reaches above the yield strength of the preform, causes
the material to flow plastically in both the radial and the axial directions. As the process produces
localized deformation, much greater deformation of the material can be achieved with lower
forming forces as compared with other processes. In flow forming of tubes, the wall thickness of
a tube or perform is reduced and the length is increased without changing the internal diameter.
The preform can be drawn; pressed, forged, extruded or turned cup and wall thickness reduction
of up to 95% are possible. Flow forming is used in the production of cylinders, flanged
components, axi-symmetric sheet metal parts, seamless tubes for high strength aerospace and
missile applications, etc.
Forming processes are particular manufacturing processes which make use of suitable
stresses (like compression, tension, shear or combined stresses) to cause plastic deformation of
the materials to produce required shapes.
During forming processes no material is removed, i.e. they are deformed and displaced.
Forming processes tend to be typified by differences in effective stresses. These
categories and descriptions are highly simplified, since the stresses operating at a local level in
any given process are very complex and may involve many varieties of stresses operating
simultaneously, or it may involve stresses which change over the course of the operation.
