MAST

Medical Anti-Shock Trousers

Medical antishock trousers (MAST) have been used to increase venous

return to the heart until definitive care could be given. This, combined with
compression of blood vessels, is believed to cause the movement of blood
from the lower body to the brain, heart and lungs.
It is also known as the Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garment (PASG), should be
inflated if the systolic blood pressure is below 90 mm Hg in adults or below
70 mm Hg in children and signs of inadequate perfusion is present.

MICU

Mobile Intensive Care Unit

A mass casualty incident (often shortened to MCI and sometimes called a

multiple-casualty incident or multiple-casualty situation) is any incident in
which emergency medical services resources, such as personnel and
equipment, are overwhelmed by the number and severity of casualties.

A substance used for medical treatment, especially a medicine or drug.

(MI; Latin: infarctus myocardii) or acutemyocardial infarction (AMI),

commonly known as a heart attack, occurs when blood stops flowing
properly to a part of the heart, and the heart muscle is injured because it is
not receiving enough oxygen.

An emergency response unit, staffed by Paramedics, that complements the

basic life support therapies provided by EMTs from local First Aid Squads
and Fire Departments. Essentially, the MICU brings the Emergency
Department to you.
The MICUs respond for many emergencies, including:
Cardiac Problems
Breathing Problems
Stroke

The transition time period from one day to the next: the moment when the
date changes. In ancient Roman timekeeping, midnight was halfway
between sunset and sunrise, varying according to the seasons.

A white suspension of hydrated magnesium carbonate in water, used as an

antacid or laxative.
This medication is used for a short time to treat occasional constipation. It
is a laxative (osmotic-type) that is thought to work by drawing water into
the intestines, an effect that helps to cause movement of the intestines.
MOM

Milk Of Magnesia

This medication is also used to treat symptoms caused by too

much stomach acid such as heartburn, upset stomach, or indigestion. It is
an antacid that works by lowering the amount of acid in the stomach.
Generic Name: Magnesium Hydroxide
Brand Name: Ex-Lax Milk of Magnesia, Milk of Magnesia, Pedia-Lax
Chewable, Phillips Milk of Magnesia

MRI

MS

Morphine Sulfate
Multiple Sclerosis

Is a test that uses a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to make
pictures of organs and structures inside the body. In many cases, MRI gives
different information about structures in the body than can be seen with an
X-ray, ultrasound, or computed tomography (CT) scan.

Morphine Sulfate Oral Solution is in a group of drugs called narcotic pain

relievers. It is only for adults who have moderate to severe pain.
It is a prescription medicine that is used to manage moderate to severe
pain that is expected to last a short period of time (acute), and pain that
continues around-the-clock and is expected to last for a long period of time
(chronic).
It is a federally controlled substance (CII) because it is a strong opioid
pain medicine that can be abused by people who abuse prescription
medicines or street drugs.
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): MS Contin
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a potentially disabling disease of the brain and
spinal cord (central nervous system). The immune system attacks the
protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers and causes
communication problems between your brain and the rest of your body.

Eventually, the disease can cause the nerves themselves to deteriorate or

become permanently damaged. It affects the brain and spinal cord. Early
MS symptoms include weakness, tingling, numbness, and blurred vision.
Other signs are muscle stiffness, thinking problems, and urinary problems.
Treatment can relieve MS symptoms and delay disease progression.

MVA

NVD

Motor Vehicle Accident

A traffic collision, also known as a motor vehicle collision (MVC), traffic

accident, motor vehicle accident, car accident, automobile accident, road
traffic collision, road traffic accident, wreck, car crash, or car smash occurs
when a vehicle collides with another vehicle, pedestrian, animal, road
debris, or other stationary obstruction, such as a tree or utility pole. Traffic
collisions may result in injury, death and property damage.

Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea

It is usually cause by viruses; self-limiting

It can be a sign or symptom of viral gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the
stomach and intestines caused by one of any number of viruses. It is also
known as the stomach flu.

The body uses sodium to control blood pressure and blood volume. Your
body also needs sodium for your muscles and nerves to work properly.
Na+

Sodium

Sodium occurs naturally in most foods. The most common form of sodium
is sodium chloride, which is table salt. Milk, beets, and celery also naturally
contain sodium. Drinking water also contains sodium, but the amount
depends on the source.

A colorless crystalline compound occurring naturally in seawater and

halite; common salt.

Nasal Cannula

Sodium chloride inhalation is used to produce sputum (mucus, or phlegm)

from the mouth to help improve lung function in people with cystic
fibrosis, or to collect sputum for medical testing. This medication may also
be used to dilute other medications inhaled through a nebulizer.

The nasal cannula (NC) is a device used to deliver supplemental oxygen or

increased airflow to a patient or person in need of respiratory help. This
device consists of a lightweight tube which on one end splits into two
prongs which are placed in the nostrils and from which a mixture of air and
oxygen flows.
Flow rates of 1-4 litres per minute are used with nasal cannulas, equating to
a concentration of approximately 24-40% oxygen. Flow rates of up to 6
litres can be given but this will often cause nasal dryness and can be
uncomfortable for patients

no

neg

Negative

Symptom that a patient states as the reason for seeking medical care

(of a laboratory test) indicating that a substance or a reaction is not present.

(of a sign) indicating on physical examination that a finding is not present,

often meaning that there is no pathological change.
(of a substance) tending to carry or carrying a negative chemical charge.
False negative: A result that appears negative when it should not. An
example of a false negative would be if a particular test designed to detect
cancer returns a negative result but the person actually does have cancer.

neuro

Neurology

NG

Nasogastric

It is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system.

Neurology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of
conditions and disease involving the central and peripheral nervous system
(and its subdivisions, the autonomic nervous system and the somatic
nervous system); including their coverings, blood vessels, and all effector
tissue, such as muscle. Neurological practice relies heavily on the field
of neuroscience, which is the scientific study of the nervous system.

Reaching or supplying the stomach via the nose

Nasogastric tube

A nasogastric tube (NG tube) is a special tube that carries food and
medicine to the stomach through the nose. It can be used for all feedings or
for giving a person extra calories. It is important to take good care of the
feeding bag and tubing so that they work properly.

nitro

Nitroglycerine

BRAND NAME(S): Nitrostat, Deponit

Nil per os (alternatively nihil/non/nulla per os) (npo or NPO) is a medical

instruction meaning to withhold oral food and fluids from a patient for
various reasons.

Normal saline is a sterile mixture of salt and water. It is called normal

because its salt concentration is similar to tears, blood, and other body
fluids (0.9% saline). It is also called isotonic solution.
