Welcome the class. Special opening today


Warm-up: Getting to know each other. Students
have to write three things (about themselves) down
on a piece of paper. These go in a hat. Each student
then picks out three things from the hat, and then
interviews their classmates to see who matches
their piece of paper.
Feedback some of their answers.
Outline Scheme of work for the course: timetable,
class work, homework and use of platform.
Introduce topic by reading the title Our people
and discuss personality traits with students,
In pairs/group: read out the Q (p.8) in SB in
relation to the photos and elicit answers.
Have them speak as much as possible. C1 are
usually eager to chat.
P.9: Read Exam Information box aloud. Tell
students they will be asked to get the gist, detailed,
purpose, or attitude of speaker.
Explain to students underlining will help them
focus in on information. As a group, students
should underline the key words in Q help them.

3.VOCABULARY
(20 min)

Play the recording twice. They can ask to stop it at


any time for clarification, understanding or
confirmation by sharing what they have
understood.
Go over any vocabulary, phrasal verbs and idioms
inherent in the listening (answer key). Reinforce
vocabulary. Help with pronunciation.
P.9 apply use of learned vocabulary with mini
speaking in pairs (ex.5).
Feedback
As a warmer With books closed, ask students in pairs to write
down three different examples of collocations with give and
make. Discuss with them what the complexities might be with
comprehension and context.
p. 14, ex.1, 2 and 3: in pairs/group leave the time
to elicit answers and check.

Further Suggestions:
If students seem to prefer talking, or are really on top of things, skip WB
reinforcement, and just let them talk making sure they focus on the correct use of
the collocations/personality trait vocabulary.
You can print and distribute the Unit 1 word list from the Teacher's Resources CDROM
