Brief Class Description (contextual information including number of students, subject,

level, IEP/ELL/GT or other special considerations):
I am teaching a seventh grade world cultures GT class of around 32 students. The class is divided
into 8 groups of around 4-5 students per group. Since it is a GT class, there are no IEPs for
students with behavioral issues. However, the lesson will be modified to challenge these students
more than a traditional class.
Since this is the last class of the day, I will work dismissal into the end of the lesson.

Unit: Europe/Ancient Rome

Lesson Topic: The Achievements of Ancient Rome & How to Write an Effective
Essay
Lesson Length: 1 45 Minute class period.
Prior Knowledge (How do you know the students are ready for this lesson?):
The students will be prepared for this lesson because they filled out an identical
achievement chart for Ancient Greece. The students are already knowledgeable of the
achievement vocabulary, plus they already understand my expectations for successfully
completing the chart. In order to be sure of this understanding, I will tell the class how many
examples of each achievement I would like to see.

Technology Integration/Needs:
Document Reader/Projection Screen

(This lesson requires minimal technology use because I am not sure of

the mobile lab availability)
Lesson Procedure:
Opening Activity (describe your warm-up/engagement/hook/motivation):
o Drill: The drill will recap yesterdays lesson on the legend of Romulus and
Remus. The drill will state, What does the legend of Romulus and Remus tell us
about Roman Culture?
Time Allotted:
o Max 5 minutes (2-3 minutes to complete the drill & 2-3 minutes to review in
a class discussion)
Adaptations (for IEP, ELL, culture, and other special needs):
o Students with IEPs for reading will have the teacher or teachers aide read them
the drill.
o Students with IEPs for writing will have a scribe.
o (There are no students with IEPs in this class)
Transition (explicitly linking concepts/activities/objectives):
Those were some excellent answers! Today we will conduct an analysis of Ancient
Roman Achievements in order to evaluate the impact they have had on the modern world!
Activity 1 (describe activity):
Depending on the energy level of the class, the students will work either individually or
with their group to research Ancient Roman Achievements. This will be done using the
World History Textbook. Students will look at achievements such as: Government,
Architecture, Engineering, Philosophy, Literature, and Language.
Time Allotted:
Maximum 15 minutes. I will keep a timer on the promethium board.
Adaptations:
Before the students begin, I will remind them of my expectations and how many
examples/descriptions of each achievement they need.
Students with IEPs for reading will have the teacher or teachers aide read them the drill.
Students with IEPs for writing will have a scribe.
(There are no students with IEPs in this class)
Transition:
321Okay! Everyone should be finished with their Achievement Chart. Now,
before we move into our assessment, I would like to teach you an outline for writing assessments
that I learned when I was in the 7th Grade. I encourage you to pay very close attention, and fill
out the outline accurately. I STILL USE THIS WRITING FORMAT TODAY! In fact, this helped
my score on my SATS, provided structure for my college application essay, and it is now an
automated thought process I go through whenever I am writing assessment.
Activity 2 (describe activity):
SOAP WATER WATER DRY Outline. SOAP, which is the introduction paragraph, is an
abbreviation for Subject (opening sentence), Opinions/Objective, Additional
Information/Analysis of data, and Purpose (thesis). Water, which is the structure for the

body of the paper, is an abbreviation for Why # 1 (argument # 1), Affect (Verb: How your
argument influences your purpose), Transition sentence, Evidence/Examples from
resources, and Reconnection to the purpose/thesis. Students can use as many WATERS
for the body of their paper as long as they incorporate multiple arguments and cite
relatable forms of primary sources as evidence. Lastly, the DRY stands for summary of
the Direction of the paper, Restate purpose, and Your final thoughts.
Time Allotted:
Maximum 15 Minutes
Adaptations:
o Students with IEPs for reading will have the teacher or teachers aide read them
the drill.
o Students with IEPs for writing will have a scribe.
o (There are no students with IEPs in this class)
Transition:
I understand that this is a lot to take in. We will work on this format and writing structure
over the next two weeks. You will not be given the quiz until you are ready. Now, using the
writing format you just created, make a SOAP WATER WATER DRY outline on your assessment
to evaluate the impact they have had on the modern world.
Closing Activity (summarize learning and/or revisit objective):
Assessment: Roman Achievements Outline DBQ. Question: To what degree did the
civilization of Ancient Rome impact the modern world? Cite specific examples to support
your response. Students will answer this question in outline form. They will use a SOAP
WATER WATER DRY template.
Time Allotted:
10 minutes
Extension/Follow-up (homework, etc. optional):
Same as Safety Valve.
Safety Valve (What will you have students do if you have time left in class?):
If there is time left in class, students can continue working on Geography and the Rise
of Rome.
