TATTOOING and

MICROPIGMENTATION

Information for
Personal Service
Settings Operators

Porcupine Health Unit, Public Health Inspection Services, Control of Infectious Diseases

Skin piercing such as tattooing and micropigmentation are well-recognized risk factors for the
acquisition of blood-borne infections such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV. Infection control
precautions must be followed to protect both personal service workers and clients.
General Requirements:
Work area must be clean, tidy
and well lit.
Hand wash sink(s) must be:
Located near the work area(s);
Supplied with hot and cold

running water, liquid soap in a


dispenser and single-use hand
towels at all times.
Premise must be equipped with a
sink(s) for cleaning of equipment/
instruments.
Work contact surfaces
(headrests, worktables and
chairs, etc.) must be cleaned and
disinfected with a low level
disinfectant after each client.
Used needles/sharps must be
placed into a puncture-resistant,
leak-proof container with a tightfitting lid and properly labelled
with a biological hazard sign.
Cover items that may be handled
during the procedure with single
use plastic bags or cling film.
Water used for rinsing is placed in

disposable cups.
Sterilization must be done in an
approved autoclave or dry heat
sterilizer.
Autoclave or dry heat sterilizer
must be spore tested bi-weekly.
Failed spore test must be
reported to the local health unit
immediately upon notification
from the lab.
Have all required supplies for
service available and in easy
reach.
Remove any items not required
from the work area.
Cover any work surfaces or items
that cannot be disinfected with
disposable coverings or clean
linen.
Store multi-use tools in a clean,
covered container when not in
use.

Requirements:
Hands must be washed:

before and after each client/

Wear single use gloves for each


client.
Gloves must be changed
between clients, and between
breaks in treatment of the same
client.
Use single-use, disposable,
sterile needles and discard
immediately after use in sharps
container.
Open sterile, packaged
equipment only when ready to
begin procedure.
Use disposable razors for
shaving tattoo area and then
discard.
Skin is cleansed with a skin
antiseptic.
Dispense creams, lotions and
ointments with single-use
applicators. Discard after use.
(OVER)

Do not tattoo within 6 inches of


inflamed or infected skin.
Re-useable equipment is
manually cleaned or cleaned in a
ultrasonic cleaner, then
disinfected and sterilized as
required.
Ink caps, any left over ink and
leftover petroleum jelly are
disposed of in a lined garbage
container.
Tattoo area is covered with a
clean and non-stick dressing.
Provide client with verbal and
written after-care instructions.
Keep client records and
accidental blood and body fluid
exposure records on site for one
year.
Hepatitis B vaccination is
strongly recommended.
