Porcupine Health Unit, Public Health Inspection Services, Control of Infectious Diseases
Skin piercing such as tattooing and micropigmentation are well-recognized risk factors for the
acquisition of blood-borne infections such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV. Infection control
precautions must be followed to protect both personal service workers and clients.
General Requirements:
Work area must be clean, tidy
and well lit.
Hand wash sink(s) must be:
Located near the work area(s);
Supplied with hot and cold
disposable cups.
Sterilization must be done in an
approved autoclave or dry heat
sterilizer.
Autoclave or dry heat sterilizer
must be spore tested bi-weekly.
Failed spore test must be
reported to the local health unit
immediately upon notification
from the lab.
Have all required supplies for
service available and in easy
reach.
Remove any items not required
from the work area.
Cover any work surfaces or items
that cannot be disinfected with
disposable coverings or clean
linen.
Store multi-use tools in a clean,
covered container when not in
use.
Infection and Prevention Control
Requirements:
Hands must be washed:
treatment;
before and after wearing
gloves, and
in between breaks in service.
