West Kootenay Traffic
The West Kootenay Traffic Services/Nelson IRSU have

seen an increase in excessive speed on the roadway. We all
are enjoying the early spring and the roads are very clean
and clear, but this does not mean you should increase
your speed. We still have wildlife, bicyclists, pedestrians
and tourists using our roads.
In the last week, we have stopped and seized 13 vehicles for
seven days for exceeding the posted speed limit by 40 km/
hr. These speeds have occurred by drivers in the morning
travelling to work and in the early afternoon and evening.
If you are travelling in excess of 40 km/hr, you can be
charged for excessive speed with a fine of $368 and points.
If in excess of more than 60 km/hr, a fine of $483, plus
points. In addition to the fine, your car will be seized for
seven days (costing you storage and a tow bill). If your
excessive speed leads to a crash, your insurance depending on circumstances can be compromised.
With the nice weather comes fast driving, and we are warning the public to obey the speed laws. We are out there watching and no tolerance will be allowed for excessive speed.
We want the Kootenay Boundary area to be the safest
in the province and so far we are please help us keep it
that way.

celebration features Red Pine, globally acclaimed translator
and interpreter of Chinese poetry and culture. He has been
honoured with a number of awards, including NEA and Guggenheim fellowships, Asian Literature Translation and PEN
awards.
On Friday, May 27 at 7 pm, Red Pine will read his favorite
Chinese poetry and excerpts from his latest book, Finding
Them Gone, a pilgrimage to the homes and graves of famous
Chinese poets. Also at the Langham Theatre, Asian Masks,
an exhibition of East & Southeast Asian masking traditions,
served up with traditional Asian deserts and teas from Cloud
Mountain Tea House. This event is free.
Red Pine will return Saturday, May 28 at 10 am to talk about
the Heart Sutra. Since this text appeared 1500 years ago, it is
chanted as part of the daily ceremonies at Buddhist temples
throughout East Asia. Wrapped inside its three dozen lines are
the teachings of all major sects of Buddhism. Red Pine will
explicate its teachings line by line along with hand out copies
of the text for everyone.
At 11:30 am a light Asian lunch will be served, followed by a
panel discussion on Asian Masks at 12:30 pm, all at the Langham Theatre, in Kaslo. Tickets ($18) for Saturdays event are

Although fire bans have not yet been imposed in the

region, residents are urged to use extreme caution if they
decide to have open fires given the unseasonably warm
and dry weather.
Fires can have devastating impacts upon communities;
the mass evacuations and destruction in Fort McMurray
are a sober and prime example, says Andrew Bellerby,
Regional Fire Chief for the RDCK. Please dont burn
unless absolutely necessary and if you still insist on having
a fire, make sure you have plenty of extinguishing devices
available.
Never, ever leave a fire unattended or toss out cigarette
butts. Those residents who insist on having open fires are
asked to keep the following points in mind:
The type of material to be burned (only burn organics no plastics, toxins, etc.)
The size of the area to be burned
Wind direction and strength
Establish fuel/fire breaks and guards
Have fire suppression (sprinklers, hoses)
Make sure the fire is monitored at ALL times
Ensure that the fire is extinguished
If a fire spreads beyond control, contact your local
fire department immediately

What Is Your Tick

And Lyme Disease IQ?
Ticks are part of the Arachnid family and they feed on

mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. When the outdoor temperatures reach 4C, in early spring or on warmer
days in the colder season, you shouldnt be surprised to
see ticks active and looking for a host to crawl onto to take
a blood meal. But make no mistake, just because you dont
see them, doesnt mean they arent feeding on your pet.
The immature stages can be the size of a pin head!
Climate change, environmental impacts like reforestation, the expansion of host animals and bird migration
are contributing to the geographical expansion of ticks.
Throughout Canada, several tick species have been identified with varying geographical distribution. The ticks that
pose the greatest health risks to our pets are the Eastern
black-legged tick (also called the Deer tick), the American
dog tick and the Brown dog tick.
Tick-borne diseases represent a growing health hazard
for both pets and people. Ticks can transmit Lyme disease
and many other pathogens that may cause debilitating
disease and even death. Initial tick attachment and feeding of at least 24 - 48 hours is required before transmission of many tick-borne pathogens can occur.
Lyme disease, caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, is primarily transmitted by the Deer tick (Ixodes
scapularis). In dogs, symptoms can include fever, lethargy,
enlarged lymph nodes, arthritis and renal disease. Your
veterinarian can make a diagnosis and treatment recommendations for Lyme disease based on a history of a
bite from a Deer tick, clinical signs and blood testing. Its
important to be vigilant about tick prevention and be an
advocate for your pet!
Pet owners should speak with their veterinary health
care team and implement a Comprehensive Tick Control
Program:
Have your pet tested for tick-borne diseases
Administer a tick control medication
Consider a Lyme vaccination in endemic areas
Avoid tick habitats and remove tall grasses and
leaves
Check your pets daily for ticks
Use a tick remover or fine pointed tweezers to

will receive one-on-one critiques with Elephant Mountain Literary Festivals 2016 writer-in-residence Caroline Adderson.
The Holley Rubinsky Memorial Blue Pencil Sessions run July 7
and 8 at the Nelson Public Library.
Writer and teacher Holley Rubinsky passed away in 2015. An
award-winning author, Holley was a mover and shaker in her
beloved community of Kaslo where she mentored, encouraged and cajoled the very best from the writers who sought
her guidance. Her generous bequest allows Elephant Mountain Literary Festival to offer these blue pencil sessions with a
senior writer for a nominal fee.
Caroline Adderson is the author of four novels and two story
collections, including A History of Forgetting, Sitting Practice
and Ellen in Pieces, as well as a number of novels for young
readers. She wrote the screenplay for the film Tokyo Cowboy,
which stars Nelsons Cultural Ambassador Hiromoto Ida.
Carolines work has received numerous national and international prize nominations. A two-time Ethel Wilson Fiction
Prize and three-time CBC Literary Award winner, Caroline
was also the recipient of the 2006 Marian Engel Award for mid
career achievement.
As an advisor, Caroline critiques fiction, creative nonfiction,
writing for children and screenwriting. In addition to the blue
pencil sessions there will be a free public talk on the writing
craft on Wednesday, July 6 at 8 pm at the Nelson Library. My
connection to Holley goes back to the start of my writing career when she was on faculty at the Banff Centre and I was
a participant, says Caroline. An original in voice and spirit,
she was devoted to nurturing new talent. Its an honour to be
asked to lead the first Holley Rubinsky Memorial Blue Pencil
Sessions.
Registration opens Monday, May 16 and places will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. Registered writers are
asked to submit a project description and up to 2500 words in
advance, which is followed up with a 40 minute one-on-one
discussion.
The 5th annual Elephant Mountain Literary Festival runs July
7 10 in Nelson. For information, course registration and
event tickets go to www.emlfestival.com.

Wanted Great Blue Heron

Breeding Sightings
If you have recently seen any heron nest sites, active

breeding colonies, or large groups of herons repeatedly
gathering and feeding in the area, then the West Kootenay
Naturalists Association wants to know. It is sponsoring a
breeding inventory and habitat assessment of Great Blue
Herons, with funding from the Columbia Basin Trust and
the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP).
The project is being conducted in the East and West
Kootenay and North Columbia regions. We know it
has been tough for breeding herons in many parts of the
basin; at one rookery near Golden, for example, all of
the 25+ active nests were abandoned in 2011 due to suspected eagle harassment and predation. It was a similar
story in 2013 at 22+ nests near Parsons, said Marlene
Machmer of Pandion Ecological Research Ltd. who is
leading the project.
Nest disturbance, failures and colony abandonment
are common. We want to develop an updated and comprehensive picture of heron breeding activity, success
and habitat use across the Basin, to be followed up with
actions to help this species at-risk.
Sightings reported by the public will be followedup by Machmer and volunteers across the Basin. These
observations will help update heron breeding population
estimates and may alert biologists to new breeding and/
or overwintering sites that may potentially benefit from
habitat protection and/or enhancement.
Heron habitat in the Basin has been significantly
impacted by a variety of activities including extensive land
development, construction and operation of dams, other
human disturbances, as well as Bald Eagle predation.
Anyone with heron sightings to report is encouraged

submit their sightings online at www.fwcp.ca.
The FWCP is a partnership between BC Hydro, the
Province of BC, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, First
Nations and Public Stakeholders, to conserve and enhance
fish and wildlife impacted by BC Hydro dams.

There has been a need for dental care in

Kaslo since we lost our dentist last year. In
BC there are now new regulations which
allow some dental hygienists with additional
training to work independently. These dental
hygienists have a high level of clinical experience, additional training in oral health as well
as CPR/First Aid. Kaslo is pleased to welcome
Diane Pawlyshyn RDH to Kaslo Integrative
Health Clinic starting May 13th. Diane is an
Independent Dental Hygienist and her services are covered by most dental insurance
plans. These hygienists provide a variety of

Designer Immunization Schedules

Have you heard of parents choosing to design their childs immunization schedule?
This may include waiting until their child is
older before getting their immunizations
(shots) and/or choosing some of the recommended vaccines but not all of them.
These parents may believe that by designing
a different immunization schedule, they are
doing what is best for their child. However,
these decisions are not supported by research
and are not recommended by healthcare
immunizers. They may put your child at risk.
It is very important that children receive
all recommended shots on time. The BC
Immunization Schedule is based on scientific
research. It is designed to protect children
from getting diseases when they are most
vulnerable. If we delay giving children their
shots on time, we leave them exposed longer
to illnesses which can make them very sick.
Timing is important. Following the recommended schedule gives the right protection
at the right time. Some vaccines should be
given starting at 2 months of age because
that is when babies are most at risk. Some
vaccines such as whooping cough (pertussis)

are given as a series over time in order to
build the best protection.
Why do some parents choose to delay or alter immunization schedules? They may worry
their babys immune system cannot handle
more than one shot at a time. Fortunately,
there is no need to worry. Babies are exposed
to many germs in the environment and their
bodies are able to handle this exposure. The
same happens with vaccines. A baby can
receive many vaccines at the same time
without any problems.
Some parents may wonder if a babys body
can handle all those vaccines without using
up their immune system? You bet they can!
More immune cells are being made all the
time. When you give your baby their shots on
time, the immune system gets primed to fight
off those diseases which might come along.
And remember, its perfectly okay for your
child to receive several shots at the same
appointment. Getting all vaccines for which
your child is eligible, both in their combination
form and at the same appointment is just as
effective as giving separate shots over more
appointments. Plus, it means fewer needles
for your child and thats always a good thing!
Every parent wants to do whats best
for their child. So save designers for your
wardrobe and not your childs immunization
schedule. Get all your childs shots on time. If
you have any questions about the BC Immunization Schedule or your childs shots,speak
with a public health nurse, your family doctor
or nurse practitioner.

Parents and screen time
I was home with my children after school
one day. They were eating a snack and I was
thinking about all the little to-dos that are
part of running a househo-ld. I was texting
their father about what to have for dinner
when my nine year old came to me with a
request just a minute, darling I said. Two
minutes later I was emailing someone about
one of the to-dos when my six year old came
to me with a request just a minute, honey
I said. I finished the email opened up one of
my favourite social networking sites, when I
heard a loud Mom! It was then I remembered my childrens unmet requests.
The research is pretty clear that when
children spend too much time looking at
electronic screens (TV, tablets, smart phones,
gaming devices etc.) it can interfere with their
development. Many parents know this and

put limits on the amount of time their children
spend looking at screens. But what about the
amount of time us parents spend looking at
screens does that affect our kids?
Digital information (emailing, texting and
social networking) has become such a part of
our daily lives that it is easy to lose track of
how often it captures our attention and how
much of the here and now we are missing.
Babies and children live in the here and now.
Babies are born ready to learn and they need
their parents to input the data (with spoken
words, songs, games, ideas, etc.). Children learn
through real life and the discussions about real
life they have with parents and caregivers.
Talking and interacting with children is
an essential part of helping them develop
speech and language skills. This doesnt
mean parents have to play and interact
with their children all day long. Its okay for
children to play by themselves some of the
time. However, it is critical that children have
some time every day really connecting with a
parent. Relationships are built and they grow
when we respond to each other.
Ive decided I want to keep my own screen
time to moments that I have planned to use
it and not because my mind took me there
by habit. So, tomorrow after school I am
going to sit with my kids at the table as they
eat their snack and leave my computer and
phone in another room. After that, I will take
some time to check my email and get the
to-dos done. Then the kids and I are going to
the park and Im leaving my phone at home.
