Features/Benefits
Design flexibility
Dedicated vertical supply/return unit
(Model 50DJ,DK) is ideal for new construction. The low unit profile is
maintained when the unit is installed
on the accessory roof curb, which
is approved by the National Roofing
Contractors Association (NRCA). The
roof curb is made watertight by the
roofer.
The ducts are attached directly to
the roof curb to allow all ductwork
to be completed before the unit is
positioned.
Dedicated horizontal unit (Model
50DW,DY) is ideal for replacement or
special applications such as thru-thewall jobs or jobs where sound must be
attenuated before the duct penetrates
the roof. Ducts connect directly to
unit, using factory-supplied flanges.
Horizontal units may be curb mounted
or slab mounted.

Unit efficiency
Dual serviceable, semi-hermetic compressors on intertwined evaporator
coil ensures excellent full and part-load
efficiency with EERs (Energy Efficiency Ratio) to 9.7. Dual refrigerant
circuits provide standby capability
should one circuit require service.

Form 50DJ,DK-5PD

Reliable 06D Carlyle compressors are

proven performers.
Variable air volume (VAV) units have
a minimum of 5 stages of unloading.
Constant volumes have 2 stages of
capacity with field-installed accessory
unloaders available to provide 5-stage
operation.
Optional hot gas bypass valve permits low-load operation of the refrigeration system.
Optional integrated economizer permits free cooling and utilizes a solidstate enthalpy control. The economizer
operates in conjunction with mechanical cooling when required and is
factory installed for either vertical or
horizontal operation. A field-installed
differential enthalpy sensor is available
as an accessory for even greater energy savings. The use of differential enthalpy allows the unit control to
compare the enthalpy difference between return air and outside air to
determine which is more economical
to condition for enhanced energy
savings. Field-installed rainhood/filter
assembly prevents moisture or objects from entering the unit. Also
available is an accessory manual outdoor air damper that allows intake
of up to 25% nominal cfm.
Exhaust air relief is available for
economizer units:
barometric relief (CV or VAV)
power exhaust (CV)
100% modulating power exhaust
(VAV)
Power exhaust relieves up to 100%
of nominal cfm. Field-adjustable set
points on modulating power exhaust
prevent space pressurization problems. Factory-installed relief options
are unit mounted on downflow units.
Accessories can be duct mounted
on horizontal applications.
Single supply fan design reduces
noise and vibration, and avoids problems related to parallel fan designs.
Inlet guide vanes (option) are available on VAV units for fan modulation. All associated controls are factory
installed.
Alternate size motors provide
application flexibility. Optional highefficiency motors increase unit
efficiency.

Installation/serviceability
Small footprint requires less roof area
and makes unit easier to rig. Low
2

unit profile allows units to be mounted

closer to edge of building while remaining out of public view. Up to
60% smaller volume than comparable
units.
Single-point electric connections are
standard on all units, regardless of
voltage or optional heater size. Electrical service access can be made
through roof curb or side of unit.
Hinged access panels are located
so as to make it easy to reach
standard serviceable components for
maintenance. No fasteners need to be
removed, which reduces servicing
time and prevents roof leaks caused
by discarded screws puncturing the
roof.

Unit controls
Constant volume units (Model
50DJ,DW) utilize a solid-state relay
board that interfaces with any 2-stage
heat/2-stage cool thermostat. Economizer units utilize a mixed air thermistor with a field-adjustable set point.
Variable volume units (Model
50DK,DY) utilize a self-diagnostic
microprocessor based control. The
microprocessor monitors stages of
cooling, morning warm-up cycle and
unit safety controls. At start-up, the
self-diagnostic test verifies component
operation and calibration. Fault codes
reduce service troubleshooting time
and difficulty.

Accessory space temperature reset

(VAV only) prevents overcooling the
space and maintains higher airflow to
ensure adequate ventilation air to
the space. It automatically resets the
discharge air temperature up when
space temperature reaches the field
adjustable set point. Discharge air
temperature resets up 3.3 F for every
degree below set point in the space.
Unit design is ETL (Electrical Testing
Laboratory) and CSA (Canadian
Standards Association) certified.
When installed with the economizer
and power exhaust option or accessory and field-supplied switches and
wiring, units can be run in the building
pressurization mode or the smoke
purge mode. In the event of a fire or
smoke condition, a zone can be
pressurized to prevent smoke from
entering the zone, or smoke can
be exhausted from a zone. On constant volume (CV) units, a set of terminals is provided for a switch or relay
to disable the unit; all other connections must be made directly to the
appropriate device. On the VAV
units, terminals are provided for most
of the necessary connections. (Refer
to page 27 of this book.)
Terminals are provided for a fieldinstalled 115-v convenience outlet
to be used during servicing when unit
is not operating. Terminals can also
be used to power field-installed smoke
detectors.

Part load operation

For efficient part load operation, the Weathermakert II units
utilize 2 semi-hermetic compressors, each on its own refrigerant circuit. Additional capacity steps allow the unit to
match the cooling load without cycling compressors or artificially loading the unit with hot gas bypass.
Constant volume units have 2 stages of cooling capacity
as standard. Accessory suction pressure unloaders are available for installation on the lead compressor. Accessory unloaders are NOT required on the lag compressor and should
NOT be installed. Capacity reduction is handled by the lead
compressor.
6

To provide the maximum capacity steps available, VAV

units are supplied with electric unloaders as standard.
See table below for capacity steps per unit.

Accessory solid-state Time Guard II device prevents compressor short cycling

by providing a 5-minute delay before restarting the compressor after shutdown.
The use of Time Guard II devices (one per compressor) ensure proper oil return and protects motor windings from overheating.

ELECTRIC HEATER

POWER EXHAUST

Heaters are available in a wide range of capacities for factory or field installation. Most heater packages are wired for 2-stage heat. On VAV units, electric
heat is used for morning warm-up only, and is wired only for single-stage heat.

COLD TEMP SETPOINT

Integrated economizer saves energy by using low temperature outside air to provide cooling. The electronic control logic located in the economizer motor integrates economizer cooling with mechanical cooling. If the conditioned space requires more cooling, mechanical cooling will be brought on to satisfy the cooling
need. Solid-state enthalpy control senses both dry- and wet-bulb of the outdoor air
to provide an accurate enthalpy reading. Differential enthalpy sensor compares
outdoor temperature and humidity to return air temperature and humidity and determines the most economic mixture of air. Spring return damper motor automatically closes the outdoor air dampers in the event of a power failure.

Microprocessor-based VAV control system constantly monitors more than a

dozen system operating condition indicators throughout the unit, analyzes these
inputs, and adjusts unit operation to maintain accurate temperature control
with minimal energy consumption throughout all operating modes and loading
conditions.
By displaying any of 35 different numerical codes, the control system instantly detects and locates component problems in the unit.

NOTES:
1. Dimensions in [ ] are in millimeters.
2.
Center of gravity.
3. Allow 128-09 (3658) at top and 68-09 (1829) on sides
for service and operational clearance.
4. On multiunit applications allow 128-09 (3658) between adjacent condensers and economizers.
5. For smaller service and operational clear-ances, contact Carrier Application Engineering Department.
6. Bottom ducts designed to be attached to accessory
roof curb. If unit is mounted on dunnage, it is recommended the ducts be supported by cross braces as
done on the accessory roof curb.
7. Always line up condenser end of unit tight against
the roof curb.
8. Units with bottom return and power exhaust require
a 90 elbow in return air duct.
9. Units with bottom supply and electric heat require a
90 elbow in supply air duct.
10. When unit is slab mounted, locate the condensate
drain as low as possible on vertical face of base rail
at the same location as the standard condensate drain
using factory supplied fitting. Plug factory drilled condensate hole.

Selection procedure (with example)

I Determine cooling and heating requirements at
design conditions.
Given:
Required Cooling Capacity (TC) . . . . . 230,000 Btuh
Sensible Heat Capacity (SHC) . . . . . . 170,000 Btuh
Required Heating Capacity . . . . . . . . . . 60,000 Btuh
Condenser Entering Air Temperature . . . . . . . . 95 F
Indoor Air Temperature . . . . . . . 80 F edb, 67 F ewb
Evaporator Air Quantity . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7,000 cfm
External Static Pressure . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.50 in. wg
Electrical Characteristics (V-Ph-Hz) . . . . . . . 460-3-60
Integrated Economizer Required.
Ewb Entering Wet Bulb
Edb Entering Dry Bulb
II Select unit based on required cooling capacity.
Enter Cooling Capacities table at condenser entering
temperature of 95 F. Unit 50DJ024 at 7,000 cfm and
67 F ewb will provide a total capacity of 233,000 Btuh
and a SHC of 174,000 Btuh. Calculate SHC correction, if required, using notes under cooling capacities
tables.
III Select unit that corresponds to power source
available.

The Electrical Data table shows that a 460-3-60 unit

is available.
IV Select heating capacity of unit to provide design
condition requirement.
Using the formula found in the notes following the Heating Capacities table, calculate unit heating capacity. Unit
50DJ024 with 18 kW will provide 61,434 Btuh (18
kW x 3413 Btuh/kW).
V Determine fan speed and power requirements
at design conditions.
Tabulated fan performance includes 2-in. disposable
filters and wet evaporator coil. Refer to Component
Pressure Drops table for economizer pressure drop (.2
in. wg) and 18 kW heater pressure drop (.11 in. wg).
Add these pressure drops to the specified external static
pressure of 1.5 in. wg:
1.50 + .20 + .11 = 1.81 in. wg
Find fan rpm and bhp at 1.8 in. wg and 7,000 cfm on
Fan Performance table. Note that the fan speed is 930
rpm and the power required is 5.2 bhp. The standard
5.0 hp motor is required.

Smoke control recommendations

It is common practice to use the rooftop unit for building
pressurization and smoke purge functions in the event of a
building fire. These functions are enhanced when multiple
rooftop units are used to zone a building.
The intent of building pressurization is to keep smoke out
of a zone. This is accomplished by:
opening the economizer (option)
running the supply fan (optional inlet guide vanes open)
closing the modulating power exhaust dampers if installed (option on VAV units)
shutting off the power exhaust fan (if installed)
This allows the space to be overpressurized and smoke
will not enter the space.
The smoke purge function allows the rooftop unit to remove smoke from the space. Required unit functions for
smoke purge are:

The above wiring information shows what electrical connections and switches are required to enable smoke purge
and building pressurization. Note that the optional economizer is required for both functions and the power exhaust
is required for smoke purge.
There are 115-v terminals (TB3 Terminals 4 and 8 VAV,
TB2 Terminals 4 and 5 CV) available for powering field installed smoke detectors. The maximum available va during
smoke detector standby mode is 10 va, and 45 va during
alarm mode.
Note that is is possible to remotely energize the power
exhaust fan using the power exhaust contacts. This would
allow smoke removal to occur without a fireman having to
climb onto the roof before structural integrity can be
verified.

Controls
Operating sequences, constant volume units
(50DJ,DW)
Cooling, units without economizer Unit power ON,
system selector switch at COOL or AUTO., fan switch at
AUTO.; thermostat at setting below room temperature:
Y1 on the thermostat subbase closes, energizing compressor no. 1 as first stage of cooling. (Compressor no. 1 is
always the larger of the 2 unit compressors.) If cooling load
cannot be satisfied with only first-stage cooling, Y2 on the
thermostat will close, energizing compressor no. 2.
Condenser fans are energized with compressor no. 1.
The no. 1 fan runs continuously while the unit is on mechanical cooling; the no. 2 fan is cycled on and off for head
pressure control. Check cooling effects at a setting above
room temperature. Compressors will shut off.
Heating, units without economizer Unit power ON,
system selector switch at HEAT, fan switch at AUTO.; thermostat at setting above room temperature:
When W1 on the thermostat closes, the first stage of electric heat is energized. On a further drop in room temperature, W2 on the thermostat closes, energizing the second
stage of electric heat.
NOTE: Units equipped with low electric heat option have
only one stage. Reset thermostat to a setting below room
temperature. Unit should shut off.
Cooling, units with economizer With subbase switch
set at COOL and fan switch set at AUTO., indoor fan is
energized when Y1 on thermostat closes. If enthalpy is below setting on enthalpy switch, the economizer outside air
dampers will modulate open to satisfy the cooling requirement. If outside air alone will not meet the cooling requirements, Y2 on the thermostat will close, energizing compressor no. 1 to work in conjunction with the modulating
economizer to meet the cooling requirement. While the unit
is operating using outside air, compressor no. 2 cannot be
energized. If enthalpy is above setting on enthalpy switch,
the economizer outside air dampers move to the minimum
(ventilation) position, and condenser fans numbers 1 and 2
cycle on and off as described in Cooling, units without economizer.
NOTE: If fan switch is ON and the room thermostat is
satisfied, the outside air dampers move to the minimum
position.
Heating, units with economizer Operation is the same
as described in Heating, units without economizer, except
that the outside air dampers move to the minimum position.

Operating sequences, variable air volume

units
(50DK,DY)
Cooling When field-supplied switch or time clock places
unit in the occupied mode, microprocessor goes through a
3-minute initialization period (assuming that the control ONOFF switch is in ON position) during which display will continuously show 20 .

28

During initialization period, effective range of economizer potentiometer P2 is established and is used to sense
position of economizer dampers. For approximately 60 seconds of initialization period, dampers are driven fully open
and full open resistance of potentiometer is recorded by
microprocessor. The dampers are then driven to fully closed
position and this potentiometer resistance is also recorded
by microprocessor. These 2 readings establish effective range
of the economizer potentiometer.
Upon completion of initialization mode, the control operates unit to try to maintain the temperature at setting of
the cold temperature set point (mounted on the display
board). This is potentiometer P1. The control will always
try to useeconomizer as first stage of cooling, enthalpy permitting. Enthalpy permitting, control will open economizer
dampers and try to maintain leaving air temperature at the
cold temperature set point minus 2. If economizer dampers become fully open and still cannot maintain desired leaving air temperature, control will begin to cycle on compressors and condenser fans. Once mechanical cooling begins,
control strives to maintain leaving air temperature at cold
temperature set point rather than at the cold temperature
set point minus 2.
The microprocessor determines how rapidly capacity steps
are added or subtracted based on deviation from leaving air
set point and rate of change of leaving air temperature.
If enthalpy is such that economizer cannot be used for
cooling, dampers will go to their minimum position as set
by potentiometer P5 (located on accessory board). The control will then use mechanical cooling to meet the cooling
load.
Units with morning warm-up heat (optional electric
heat), heating When in heating mode, room terminals
must be wide open.
Dip switch 4 (located on the processor board) must be in
ON position.
If return-air temperature (T2) is 5 below warm-up temperature set point P6 (located on the accessory board), heating relay will be energized and heat will be brought on and
will run until return-air temperature is above 2 below setting on P6. During heating, economizer dampers will be
fully closed. The unit can go in and out of heating until
return-air temperature rises above the setting on P6. After
the return-air temperature rises above the warm-up set point,
unit cannot go back into heating mode until unit re-enters
occupied mode.
Units equipped with space temperature reset Unit
operates exactly like a unit without reset until reset is used.
When unit is operating in reset mode, a code of 21 will
appear on display when display button is pushed; this means
that control is controlling to a leaving air set point different
than that set using P1.
Units equipped with demand limit Unit operates exactly like standard VAV units until demand limiting takes effect and limits amount of compression that will be allowed
to be brought on.

Application data
Condensate removal
When units are mounted on roof curbs, use the factoryprovided condensate drain connections provided in the unit
base rail. Condensate drain openings are provided on the
air-handling end of the unit to allow proper drainage. When
units are mounted on concrete slabs, condensate drain openings must be drilled in the vertical face of the baserail, as

low as possible, at the same location as the factory drilled

holes. The factory supplied couplings can then be used to
connect the condensate trap. It is important to provide space
for the 4-in. trap on slab-mount installations. This can usually be accomplished by installing the trap at the edge of
the concrete slab.
