A Journal of Mechanical Engineering

Hi,

I take this opportunity to introduce myself. I

am Raghuandan, a mechanical engineer
working as a senior manager Design
department at Fouress engineering (India)
Limited, Bengaluru. In the last ten years, I have
interviewed more than 100 engineers for the
post of trainee design engineers, design
engineers, assistant managers and design
managers. But I could find only five or ten who
were really good and were passionate about
engineering.

I have seen more than 50 undergraduate and

post graduate final year projects and found
that they have not understood basic
underlying principle of design and mechanical
engineering. Some had serious flaws in the
boundary conditions that they had used, some
has wrongly interpreted the results of the
analysis in some cases the Von-Mises
stresses were exceeding the tensile strength
of material and yet the conclusions was
showing as results within acceptable limits
and some cases the deflection of the members
were as high as 10e6mm! In fact I had cajoled
this engineer saying that the deflection of the
tower had caused the tower to fly from
Peenya to Vijayanagar (which is 10 kms
distance)!

These made me to think whats wrong with

todays engineer? What is the reason for such
level of ignorance? What is that as an engineer
I can do to improve the situation? One thing
that flashed to my mind was writing a Journal
for these engineers and make them
understand the effort and science behind the

Engineering and the significance of

these subjects in solving engineering
problems.

With this intension in mind, I have

ventured out to write to all those
budding engineers who want to make
a fulfilling career.
Vision:

The vision of the Journal is to

popularise mechanical engineering
education and create an indelible
impact in the engineering sector.
What to expect from the Journal

Every month I will discuss one topic

and try to provide much information
on the subject and experts view on the
subject.

The budding engineers can send in

their articles for publication and also
academicians can present their
articles, details of projects so that the
engineering fraternity becomes aware
of their work. Students are
encouraged to send their projects
synopsis with a significance of the
project and the impact it can make in
the society.
Budding engineers can also ask questions
which will be answered by subject
experts.
There is no end to education. It is not that you
read a book, pass an examination, and finish with
education. The whole of life, from the moment you
are born to the moment you die, is a process of
learning. Jiddu Krishnamurti

Disclaimer:
The subject information presented in the Journal are not the original work of HVR, but has been the effort of renowned engineers
who have exclusively worked on the subject. HVR does not claim the authorship or ownership of the information presented

:- Salutations my Guru

The importance of the teacher or a guru cannot be over emphasised. The word Guru in
Sanskrit literally means the remover of ignorance. If today we are able to make decisions in
our engineering career, then we owe it to our guru. I take this opportunity to dedicate this
work to my Guru Shri B V Nagendra Kumar from whom I have learnt the engineering and
whose interaction gives me courage to tackle the everyday engineering problems and who
has enlightened my life with his profound knowledge of the mechanical engineering subject.

Greatest teacher and researcher in the field of mechanical Engineering

Stephen P Timoshenko - December 22, 1878 May 29, 1972 was a
Ukrainian engineer who is the father of modern day engineering
mechanics. His works in the field of engineering mechanics,
vibrations, strength of materials and elasticity are referenced used by
practicing engineers and academicians across the world. Some of his
critical works include:

Applied Elasticity
Vibration Problems in Engineering
Strength of Materials, Part I, Elementary Theory and Problems
Strength of Materials, Part II, Advanced Theory and Problems
Theory of Elasticity ,
Elements of Strength of Materials
Theory of Elastic Stability
Engineering Mechanics,
Theory of Plates and Shells
Theory of Structures,
Advanced Dynamics
History of The Strength of Materials,

Mechanics of Materials

Deliberation on History of strength of materials: According to me The history of strength of

materials is the magnum opus of Timoshenko. The book traces the history of development of
strength of materials starting from year 1800 to 1950. The books acknowledges the development of
mathematical models and researches who have contributed to the subject. What caught my attention
and made me read through the book was the preface where Timoshenko begins with This book was
written on the basis of lectures on the history of strength of materials which I gave during the last
twenty five years to the students of materials and theory of structures. Each time I read this book
again and again there is an new understanding of the subject hitherto I had missed and an urge to do
something for the future generation. The book has been splendidly written without going deeper into
the mathematical treatment of the subject. The book has been published by Dover publications in U.S.
The book is divided into fourteen chapters and begins with development of strength of materials in
seventeenth century. We will discuss the details of the book in the coming issues.

Thought in the mind hath made us.

What we are
By thought we wrought and built.
If a man's mind Hath evil thoughts, pain comes
on him as comes the wheel the ox behind . . .
If one endure in purity of thought, joy follows
him As his own shadow - sure.
-James Allen As a man thinketh

We are nothing but the fruits of our thoughts and our thoughts are sculpted by the books
we read. A career as an Engineer requires that the engineer applies enough thoughts into
the creation process. One can think properly only when there is clarity on the subject. In this
regard, good engineering text books have played important role. Today there are hundreds
of thousands of engineering text books on each of the topics and it is very essential that one
chooses the right book to shape his thoughts. I have fortunate enough to come across some
of these books that have shaped my thoughts and my career and enabled me to take right
engineering decisions.
In this section a book is critically reviewed and discussed on each of the topics. This section
is basically for the benefit of the students who are advised to purchase the book and read
through it. The books discussed in this section are reference books that will come handy for
solving everyday engineering problems. Apart from the engineering books, general books
that develop the aptitude of the engineer and helps him in developing the art of problem
solving are also discussed.
Lets begin the Journey with a general engineering reference book. A sample is shown here.
This book is published by Mc-Grawhill and is authored by Ejup N
Ganie and Tyler G Hicks. The book is a reference book for preparing
for competitive exams and is handy for fresh graduates and students
who have just started their academics.

The book has dedicated chapters for engineering mathematics,

mechanical engineering, civil and hydraulics engineering, electronics
engineering and measurements in engineering. The book has
dedicated ten chapters for mechanical engineering starting with
rigid bodies, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, fluid
mechanics and reliability engineering.

What caught my attention was the discussion on electric motors and motor controls. A
mechanical engineer is required to know the basics of motors and motor selection and sizing.

However the chapter on motors could have been expanded more to include types of motors
and starters. A reference from motor manufacturer catalogue would give the engineers an
insight into standard ratings of motor and the service factors that goes into their selection.
Overall the book is a good read.
The book is available in amazon and is bit expensive to purchase. It costs around rupees
1937/- online. However the college library or the depart library can definitely afford a few
copies in the interest of the students.
Fundamentals of Engineering

This section discusses the basics of engineering subjects and their relevance to solve practical
problems. The discussion begins with engineering drawing and the following topics will be
discussed in the following months:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Engineering materials
Engineering mechanics and fluid mechanics
Component design
Introduction to engineering standards and codes
Introduction to electrical engineering

More topics would be added depending on the readers request.

What others say about the Journal?

Congratulations! HVR Journal has come out well. I see definite utility for this journal by the student
community in general and teaching faculty in particular .It has the potential to bring together the
industry and institute on a common platform to be able to address real issues faced by our country
rather than pick up some nonexistent problem and waste time and reams of paper that go to prepare
the project reports which have no practical use.
