Intelligencetestsaredesignedtomeasureanassortmentofmentalfunctions,suchas
reasoning,comprehension,andjudgmentbypsychologist (Wood,Wood,2014). Thegoalof
intelligencetestsistoacquireanestimationoftheperson'sintellectualfunctioning. Despite,
intelligencetestshavingthesameultimategoalthereareavarietyofintelligencetestssomeof
which do not measure the identical cognitive abilities. The WoodcockJohnson III Test of
Cognitive Abilities, StanfordBinet Intelligence Scale, and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for
Childrentestpurpose,administration,andoutcomesareintelligencetestthatisusedtodetermine
cognitivefunctioning.
PeopleagetwotoninetyyearsoldcanbeevaluatedbytheWoodcockJohnsonIIITestof
CognitiveAbilities.Theadministrationofthisintelligencetestisbasedonnineareasofabilities
whichincludecomprehensionknowledge,longtermmemoryretrieval,visualspatialthinking
abilities,auditoryprocessing,fluidreasoning,processingspeed,shorttermmemory,quantitative
knowledgeandreadingwritingskills (Wood,et.al.,2014).Thetestscantakesixtytoninety
minutes to administer. The WoodcockJohnson III Test of Cognitive Abilities allows for a
detailedanalysis ofpersonintellectualabilities.TheWoodcockJohnsonIIITestofCognitive
Abilitiesisoftenutilizedinprivateschoolsystems.
TheStanfordBinetIntelligenceScale:FourthEditionisastandardizedtestthatmeasures
intelligenceandcognitiveabilitiesinchildrenandadults,fromagetwothrougheightyfiveyears
old (Wood, et.al., 2014). The StanfordBinet Intelligence Scale was created to facilitate the
correctplacementofchildreninaneducationalenvironment.TheStanfordBinet Intelligence
Scalecanassistindeterminingthelevelofcognitivefunctioninginchildrenandadults(Wood,

et.al., 2014). This intelligence test can also aid in the diagnosis of a learning disability,
developmental delay, mental retardation, or giftedness. It is utilized to provide educational
planningandplacementpredominantly.TheStanfordBinetIntelligenceScaleisadministeredin
aschoolorclinicalsetting.
TheWechslerIntelligenceScaleforChildrenisanindividuallyadministeredintelligence
testforchildrenbetweentheagesofsixandsixteeninclusivethatcanbecompletedwithout
readingorwritingportionofthetest.Thistestcanevaluateverbalcomprehension,nonverbaland
fluid reasoning, working memory and processing speed (Wood, et.al., 2014). The Wechsler
IntelligenceScaleforChildrentakesfortyeighttosixtyfiveminutestoadministerandgenerates
aFullScaleIQ,whichcandetermineachild'sgeneralcognitiveability.
As an admissions coordinator at Ascent Childrens Health Services, I worked in a
capacitythatprovidedtherapeuticservicestodevelopmentallydelayedchildrenagedsixweeks
tosixyearsold.Duringthistime,weutilizedWechslerIntelligenceScaleforChildrenasthetest
todeterminewhetherachildmetthecriteriaforcognitivedelays.Although,Ihadnoexperience
administeringthetestIfoundittobeanexcellentindicatorofachild'scognitiveabilitybecause
mostchildrenwhohadalowerIQalsoqualifiedforotherservicessuchasspeechtherapyand
occupationaltherapy.Overall,thisistheonlytypeofintelligencetestthatIhavehaddirect
experienceinwithanypopulation.

Scale,andWechslerIntelligenceScaleforChildrentestpurpose,administration,andoutcomes
areintelligencetestthatisutilizedbypsychologiststoevaluatecognitivefunctioninginvarying

ways. Accurate cognitive functioning can be assessed in a variety of methods that can be
personalizedtothepersonandsituation.Asanadmissionscoordinator,Ihadanopportunityto
see the effects of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children as a determining factor in
establishingalevelofcognitivefunctioning.Intelligencetestingisanessentialpartoftheareaof
psychologyforpractitionerstoday.
