All things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses;

PREFACE.

This small Work was commenced in the form of a Memoir of

the Saviour, and arranged for the benefit of a class of young
persons, to whom their teacher was desirous of imparting a clear
and accurate knowledge of His Life and Actions. The early
part of the history is easily arranged from the narrative of the
Evangelists ; but it is not easy to select the most suitable nar
rative, when two, three, or four relate the same occurrence
with equal truth and simplicity. This led the writer to direct
the attention of her pupils to the several narratives, one after
the other, and to present the minute circumstances to them
again in the form of questions upon the whole, which elicited a
simply beautiful detail of each event, presenting a picture so
vivid as to leave the conviction of its truth upon the mind of
each attentive listener. The Work thus insensibly assumed the
form of a Harmony, before the Author was aware that such
works already existed in the literary world. The difficulties
of historical arrangement have since that period been removed
by the use of the compendious works of Crabbe, Doddridge,
Newcome, and others, which are beyond the reach of children,
and too large for class-books. It has also been the Author's
practice to refer to the writings of the Old Testament, when
the Prophecies are quoted or alluded to, and sometimes to the
Epistles in confirmation of doctrine. After all, it is but an
outline, incomplete in many points, and it is merely as such
that it is offered to the Christian Teacher, in the hope that,
if he adopt the plan, his knowledge of Scripture, and his zeal
for the benefit of the rising generation, will induce him to
take the necessary trouble in filling up the picture from the
Sacred Text.

THE AUTHOR'S ADDRESS TO HER PUPILS.

Some of you, my dear young friends, have already pursued,

under my instructions, the course of study now presented to you
under one view. You have pursued it with pleasure, at times
with ardour ; and it may truly be said of many of you, that the
sacred subjects which have engaged your thoughts during a
portion of almost every day, have had a salutary influence upon
your character and behaviour. But I need scarcely remind you
that we have not accomplished our purposethat your know
ledge is still limitedthat your views are yet confined ; nor
will it require much solicitation on my part to induce you to
renew your applications to the volume of Inspiration, as to
living streams in a desert. Admit, then, the Saviour's instruc
tions to dispel the ignorance which you lament. Assume His
offered righteousness to cover the poverty which you feel in
the sight of God. But if none of these thoughts are in your
hearts, may the attentive consideration of His humiliation, His
sufferings, His death for our sakes, arrest your attention and
convince you of your error.
This is my hope, this is my prayer for each of you, and
that all, " beholding as in a glass the glory of God, may be
changed into the same image, from glory to glory, even as by
the Spirit of the Lord."
