1. Brief Introduction

GIS can function as a complete

switchyard but with all equipments
compactly sealed in SF6 insulated and
well earthed enclosures. Due to its
excellent characters, GIS is wildly
used all over the world and makes
major trend in power system.

Reduction of installation time & cost
Safety first

2. Comparison Between GIS

& Traditional Switchyard

Comparison between GIS & traditional switchyard

1Installation Space

GIS substation

Traditional substation

1.The dielectric strength of SF6 gas

1.The dielectric strength of air is about
(4kgf/cm2G) is about 23kV/mm that is
3kV/mm.The dielectric strength of the
7 times as great as the air
insulating oil is about 15kV/mm.
2.Compact space-saving design, for an .
exampled 161kV GIS that the installing space can be reduced to at least
1/15 of the conventional one.

2Reliability

GIS substation

Traditional substation

1.All live parts are fully sealed in 1.Apt to be affected by earthquake,

metal enclosure surrounded inert
weather conditions, snakes, birds
nontoxic SF6 gas.
and so on.
2.Exposed to air and thus be apt to
2.Strong to earthquake.
be polluted, contaminated by

mination.
4.Most assembly work is done in the 3.Most assembly work is at site.
factory. Site work is very little

3Maintenance & Inspection

GIS substation

Traditional substation

1.Detailed maintenance and inspection 1.Yearly maintenance and bushing

are supposed every 12 year because
washing are necessary.
high reliability.
2.Filtering the insulation oil is
necessary if OCB is used.
12

4Environmental Harmony

GIS substation
1.Space is small and can be put into
GIS room to cope with the environment and reduce the noise.
2.Will not make any pollution.

Traditional substation
1.Expoed to air will destroy the total
landscape and make surrounding
residents worry about electric
accident & EM wave problems.
2. Using OCB may result in oil
pollution.
13

5Installation Time & Cost

GIS substation

Traditional substation

Completely assembled and test at

factory and then transport to site by
whole bay. Only bay connecting
work At site. The site installing time
can thus be abruptly reduced to about
1/10 of the traditional one.

Installing the apparatus individually

at site is necessary and thus the
installation time and cost are
increased. Furthermore, complex
interfaces will make conflicts and
add more time and cost.
14

6Safety

GIS substation
1.All live parts are fully enclosed.
2.Enclosures were perfectly earthed.
3.No corona discharge.
4.SF6 gas is inflammable.

Traditional substation
1.Easy to get an electric shock caused
by electric conductor in air.
2.Easy to make a accident in corona
discharge.
3. Insulation oil is flammable.
