CLAMPON DSP CORROSION-EROSION MONITOR

BACKGROUND
ClampOn is proud to present its DSP
Corrosion-Erosion Monitor (CEM) for
the petroleum and process industries.
The instrument is based on the well
proven ClampOn DSP sensor platform
that is already widely used for subsea
and topside particle and pig monitoring.
The DSP (Digital Signal Processing)
platform was launched early in 2000,
since when, thousands of units have
been employed by satisfied customers
all over the world.
The ClampOn DSP CorrosionErosion Monitor (CEM) has undergone
an intensive programme of laboratory
development and field testing since early
1998, before being put on the market.
The system monitors pipe-wall thickness
over a large area, covering a pipe section
up to two metres (6.5 feet) in length.
ClampOn systems are known for their
high quality and user-friendliness - and
these qualities are integral aspects of the
philosophy underlying the design and
development of the DSP CorrosionErosion Monitor. This new instrument
offers users a reliable and uncomplicated solution at a reasonable price.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERAT I O N
The working principle of the instrument
is based on the transmission of ultrasonic signals that propagate through the
pipe material by means of clamp-on
sensors. The signals are received by a
sensor and the system compares and
analyses them with reference to the
transmitted signals.
The velocity of the transmitted
ultrasound signals is affected by changes
in the wall thickness of the pipe. These
changes are caused by factors such as
corrosion, erosion, pitting, etc., and they
are what the monitor (CEM) measures.
The Corrosion-Erosion Monitor
consists of one master sensor which
processes and controls all the signals.
The master sensor communicates with
up to eight slave (smaller) sensors
clamped to the selected pipe section.
All sensors transmit and receive ultrasonic signals which are controlled and
processed by the master sensor. This
creates a pattern of information for the
measured section. When the signals have
been processed the user can extract the
information in real time. The signal
pattern is shown in the figure (right).
The number of sensors to be used is
decided in consultation with ClampOns
technical staff. Testing has shown the
Corrosion-Erosion Monitor to be both
physically robust and capable of with

The signal path follows the metal structure between all eight sensors
which in turn generate a pattern of 64 measurements. All sensors communicate with each other under the control of the master sensor.

standing changes in the temperature of

the pipe. The system is capable of performing measurements on pipe diameters
from 2 to 30 to detect changes of 1/100
of the wall thickness at a resolution of
0.02 mm. (0.00078).

INTELLIGENCE AND
SELF CALIBRAT I O N
The ClampOn DSP Corrosion-Erosion
Monitor features self-testing of the
following parameters: input level, RAM,
internal voltage, internal temperatures,
all internal buses and the sensor element.
The system offers users the possibility
of loading new software releases into the
sensor. In due course, even more intelligent and improved software versions will
be developed and released to upgrade
existing installations.
