More than a shop, theyre adding hope in the fight against cancer.

igs. They can be a fashion statement, a flattering accessory or the

definitive tool in helping some
to feel more like themselves again. Thinning
hair, chemotherapy treatment these are the
things that send women and children in to
the caring hands of Marlene Giusti, a retired
registered nurse, the owner and one-person
team behind Hollywood Wigs.

For most, seeking medical treatment
is about as far as we go in terms of imagining
what happens next in the stages of addressing
cancer or other conditions that can relate to
hair loss. And its not until someone close to
us is diagnosed that
we realize the many
other things that begin to occur. Especially in the cases of
cancer, the physical
appearance begins to
change, the vibrancy
of the skin, hair and
nails can begin to
dim a little each day.
This undoubtedly is a
disheartening process
that leaves a person
with not only a low
self-esteem, but also
depression. Both of
which can step in the
way of the healing
process.

It has been supported that a sense
of positivity can greatly help aid a person
in their fight to get healthy. Feeling better
about oneself will do more than just improve
mood, as it helps to relieve stress and anxiety, further allowing the body to do what it
needs to without much interruption. Feeling good about yourself can sometimes be
directly linked to looking good, and when
youre suffering from a condition that alters
your appearance, looking good simply means
looking like yourself again.

as many women and children as I can who
are dealing with hair loss due to medical reasons. It is so important to me that they come
into a private, comfortable, safe setting and
have a good experience with their family and
friends. This is why I am open only by appointment.They are going through so much
and losing their hair can be very traumatic
for them. They need a one on one experience
without pressure of
any kind.
For the last 8 years
Hollywood Wigs has
made it their focus to
listen to the sensitive
needs of their customer base. It is their
mission, if you will,
to do everything
[they] can to meet
a customers expectations and much
more. Its a combination of providing
the specialized care
to each unique customer that visits their
shop and the quality
of the product they
provide. Yet, for Hollywood Wigs it doesnt
stop there.

Giusti has participated in the Susan
G. Komen Race for the Cure, with this year
being the 9th year since 2007. The Hollywood
Wigs team has come in first place as the team
raising the most money in the corporate division six years in a row. We are very proud of
this achievement and raised over $8,000 last
year, the most ever. We also, for the second
year in a row, had a clean sweep of the all the
award categories with the most money raised,

most team members, most breast cancer survivors, and most creative for our pink wigs
that we wear each year, Giusti adds. The race
is experiencing some big changes this year
and will be held Saturday September 17th at
Chuckchansi Park. They will also be hosting
a Pink Ribbon Fundraiser at their shop on
Sunday September 11th.

Childrens Hospital Central California (CHCC) has also experienced the
influence of Giustis good work. When she
purchased the shop, Giusti was told by the
owner that she would be receiving calls from
the CHCC to fit children undergoing chemotherapy for wigs. However, not every family could afford the services she offered. My
first hospital visit was very difficult for me
and what made it even worse was the fact that
there were no funds available to help these
families out. With the help of a social worker
at the hospital, I was able to start a wig fund
to help with the expenses, Giusti states.

IOT Wig Fund is funded by private
donations, as well as bracelet donations. Raising money for the fund has been a difficult
journey, as the hospital is unable to assist
Giusti in promoting it. It has been on the
shoulders of Hollywood Wigs alone to raise
awareness of the fund and try to get enough
donations to help the families who need their
services. We have fitted over 50 children
through the years and this is something very

near and dear to my heart, says Giusti.

Giusti is also a volunteer for the
American Cancer Society having taught the
Look Good Feel Better (LGFB) classes for the
past 8 years. In 2015 she also won the LGFB
Sunrise Award for the state of California. It
is plain to see that Marlene Giusti, owner of
Hollywood Wigs, really is doing everything
she can for not only her customers but also
for those in the fight against cancer.

However, it should also be noted
that the wigs Giusti provides is also open for
sale to the general public as well. There are
many women who are wearing wigs for fashion and fun who also come to my shop and
like the privacy that I offer. Women are wearing wigs again, and the stigma that has been
attached to wigs relating to cancer and poor
health has changed, which is comforting to
those who need wigs to know that they are
also being worn by the general public young
and old, Giusti adds. The shop also carries
a variety of head-coverings, scarves, and hats
for customers who prefer not to wear wigs.

Perfecting
Perfection

hat does the word perfect

mean to you? Being perfect or
working on perfection seems
to be as popular as baseball and hot dogs.
My guess would be that we all spend far
too much time striving for perfection.
I often talk to my clients about their
anxiety, and I have to wonder how much
anxiety they would experience if they had
no concept of perfection.

What exactly does it mean to be
perfect? Thats the elephant in the room.
Right? What isperfect to me is not the
same thing as what is perfect to you.
Which definition of perfection should
we be striving to achieve? Does it mean
different things when applied to ourselves
as compared to when it is applied it to
someone else?

Does the idea of perfection take
on a different meaning when applied to
people verses physical things? According
to the dictionary, perfect means, having
no mistakes or flaws. By that definition,

no person on the planet will ever be
perfect. All humans have flaws and make
mistakes. Its simply part of the human
equation. So why do we even try?

For me personally, I do try my
best to be the best I can be. That is the
top layer, so to speak. Underneath that
layer, I realize that I will never be perfect.
My perfection shows itself in the form
of trying to be my best as well as striving
to be better than yesterday. Maybe that
means that Im a perfectionist about
trying!

While perfection does not always
feel like a realistic goal, giving up before
beginning or accepting the status quo can
often feel like a failure. Youve heard the
saying that failure is simply never trying at
all. Perhaps this is true. Not many people
I know hit perfection the first time they
step up to bat. All that practice the
trying to be better is what gets us closer
and closer to that illusive perfection.

Is perfection different when we
discuss physical things verses people?
When we build a table, for example, if we
cut a board too short or too long we can
simply cut another board. If we paint it
the wrong color, we can simply repaint it.
With people and their actions, however,
we do not get the opportunity for do
overs in the same way. When we mess
up something we are making or building,

we can tell people that we are not finished
with it yet. That way, they dont really see
mistakes, they see a work in progress. That
sure sounds better than, I failed.

If we can apply the do over
principle to physical things, why not
also use that with people? When a friend
or family member does something
inappropriate, what if we allowed them
a chance for a do over? Imagine what
the world would be like if everyone gave a
second chance as freely to people as we do
to material creations?

As we consider the days, weeks,
and months ahead, try being more
flexible of your definition of perfection.
