WHAT IS MECHANICS OF SOLIDS

(MOS)?
-

a branch of applied mechanics that deals with the

behaviour of solid bodies subjected to various types of
loading
Other names:
Strength of materials
Mechanics of deformable bodies

WHY MOS ?

WHY MOS?
Statics, Maths,
Physics

Mechanics
of Solids
Structural Analysis,
Geotechnical Engineering
Water Engineering

Design of Structures

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Continue the concepts of engineering mechanics
so that students gain an understanding of the
structural behaviour of materials.
Students should be able to calculate the stresses
and deformations of simple structures such as
columns and beams.

THE PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVE

OF MOS
- to determine the stresses, strains and displacements in
structures and their components due to the loads acting
on them
- if we can find these quantities for all values of the loads
up to the loads that cause failure, we will have a
complete picture of the mechanical behaviour of these
structures

ASSESSMENT
The final grade will be based on the sum of the
scores from each of the assessment task.
The final examination in June is worth 60% of the
Final Mark.
The class work ( 1 mid semester quiz 20% (week
7)+ Tutorial Hand-Ins 20%) & Final Examination
60% *.
*A

mark of at least 40% in the final examination is required before the

class work is included in the final mark.

Lecture material and work classes will only
be understood if you have completed
your readings prior to attending the class

21

A NOTE ON CLASS PARTICIPATION

This is strongly encouraged

and rewarded
It is much better to say
something you realize is
mistaken than never to say
it at all.

Disruptive behaviour will NOT be tolerated! (no talking, no
mobile phones, no laptops!!)
If you dont understand something please ask me to
explain it better!!
