System 1850 MI Cable Specification

2-Hour
Fire Rated
Cable

System 1850 mineral insulated, metal-sheathed cable

shall be a factory assembly of one or more conductors
insulated with highly compacted magnesium oxide
insulation and enclosed in a seamless, liquid-and-gastight continuous copper sheath.
Conductors shall be of solid, high electrical conductivity
copper with a cross-section area corresponding to
standard AWG sizes.
The insulation shall be of highly compressed
magnesium oxide that will provide proper spacing for
conductors. Thickness of insulation shall be at least 55
mils for all 600 volt power and control cables from 16
AWG to 500 kcmil and 23 mils for 300 volt twisted pair
cables.

Underwriters Laboratories Classified:

2-Hour Fire Resistive Rating
For electrical retrofits where space is at a premium
and available space is congested, the installation of
fire protection for conventional wiring may be nearly
impossible. Installed in free air, Pyrotenax cable is a
low profile wiring system that requires only a small
fraction of the surface area consumed by conduit and
wire of equivalent ampacity.
Pyrotenax cable arrives on the job site with the fire
rating an integral part of the cable. The fire resistance
of all other electrical systems is achieved by employing
additional materials and specialized installation
techniques.

System 1850 cables shall comply with Artcle 330 and

all other relevant provisions and articles of the National
Electrical Code (NEC) and the Canadian Electrical
Code (CEC). When specified for its fire rating, it shall be
classified by Underwriters Laboratories as being 2-hour
fire resistive*.
System 1850 shall be specified by the number of
conductors, conductor gauge, and outside diameter
of the cable in thousandths of an inch. (eg. 1/250-746
if single conductor, 250 kcmil cable). Accessories for
terminating and installing System 1850 cables shall also
reference cable diameter. (eg. Pyropak 1/3-449 if single
conductor, #3 AWG cable).
*Note: When installed for fire rating, System 1850 cables must be

supported every six (6) feet. Contact Technical Services for a copy of
the Pyrotenax installation manual (H57864).

Underwriters Laboratories Listed:

Hazardous (Classified) Locations
With approved terminations installed, Pyrotenax cable
meets the requirements of the NEC (National Electrical
Code) for wiring in areas classified as hazardous. The
cable can be used in Classes I, II and III; Divisions
1 and 2. The diagram shows a comparison between
Pyrotenax cable and conduit/wire with accessories
required for installation in areas classified hazardous.
