The arts disturb while the sciences reassure. How true is this?

Light and Dark. Water and Fire. Life and Death. It seems very often in life
that the Arts and the Sciences are at war with each other, like the
dichotomies above. Some say that the Arts are way more important than
the Sciences, and that the Sciences causes us to worry instead of
providing the relief that the Arts provide. Others say that it is the Arts
that distract and disturb us from the true reassurance that the Sciences
provide us. Well, in this essay, I am going to disprove the statement that
The arts disturb while the sciences reassure, because this statement is
false to some extent
First things first, what do disturb and reassure both mean? For the
purposes of this argument, disturb is going to mean anything that
attempts to disrupt the natural order of things, while reassure will be
defined as something that is able to allow humans to feel at peace, and
for humans to feel that everything is in order.
First of all, the Arts can offer us a world to escape into. The Script is a
musical band whose musical pieces all seem to focus around one central
theme: heartbreaks. For a person who has just gone through a heartwrenching experience, listening to Six Degrees of Separation or Talk
You Down along with a pair of headphones can allow your mind to
escape into a world of music and away from reality. Especially since these
songs reflect your current mood and are strangely able to recreate what
you are going through, it helps you to get by for a while while you forget
about your pain, thereby reassuring you and giving you a sense of peace,
instead of disrupting the natural order of things. Hence, Art is not always
disturbing.
Secondly, the Arts can make us think. Sculptures, songs, movies,
paintings, all of these things have something that appeals to the senses,
whether it is a nice tune or excited colours, usually, underneath these,
there is an underlying message to drive to the viewer. For example,
Frozen was a movie which people saw as a critique about fairy tales,
what with the reversed roles and twists in the story. This movie was able
to inspire ideas in people and make them rethink the definition of fairy
tales. In this way, Art is able to get people to critique the different
aspects of our lives or gain new ideas that allow us to see the world in a
slightly different way, and this allows us to create new order in our life
instead of creating chaos or disturbing us. Hence, Art is not always
disturbing, and it can sometimes be reassuring.
Some say that the Sciences are able to reassure us by helping us find
new logical orders to different aspects of the world through

experimentation and discovery. This is because Science aims to organise

and find out more about the world, and by putting the world into order,
there is less uncertainty in this world as we can predict more things more
and we have a better understanding of the myriad wonders around us.
For example, the taxonomic system of naming organisms is a way to
organise the world by grouping organisms together and forming larger
and broader groups, or smaller and more specific groups. In this way, we
have less uncertainty of the flora and fauna that we have in this world,
and the order of the world around us becomes greater, which in turn
reassures us.
However, the fact is that the Sciences are neutral. Science is not always
good. Science is about discovering things and understanding how the
world works. It does not limit its discoveries to whether they are not
worrisome for us, or whether they can incite fear in us. For example, the
discovery of Global Warming through scientific research was certainly
not something that got humans to think Okay, everything is okay. In
addition to that, the development of nuclear science which generated the
Atomic Bomb was definitely not a reassuring development. It sparked a
nuclear arms race and the Cold War which was in no way creating order
and peace for us. In this way, Science is not always reassuring because
its discoveries can sometimes be about how the natural order of our lives
are being disrupted, hence Science can disturb instead of reassure
people.
Hence, the statement that The arts disturb while the sciences reassure
is not always true, because the Arts can be reassuring instead of
disturbing, by providing a world for us to escape to and by making us
think more deeply about our lives, while the Sciences may not always be
reassuring, as even though it can bring logic and order into our lives, it is
nevertheless neutral and can be disturbing to us at times.
