Theseprintingdevicesprovidesignificantlybetterqualityiftheimageisthesameresolutionasthe

PurgeUndo,Clipboard,orHistories

Undo,Clipboard,andHistoriesallholdimagedata.TofreeRAM,chooseEdit>PurgetopurgetheUndo
andClipboard.PurgingHistoriescanfreeRAMorscratchdiskspacedependingonhowrecentyour
historydatais,butthepurgeoperationcannotbeundone.Toreducediskspaceusage,reducethe
numberofHistoryStatesavailableintheGeneralpreference.
Minimizingthenumberoflayers

LayersarefundamentaltoworkinginPhotoshop,buttheyalsoincreasefilesizesandredrawtime
becausePhotoshoprecomposeseachlayeraftereachchangeintheimage.Afteryouhavecompleted
changestolayers,youcanflatten(merge)themtoreducethesizeofafile.Youshouldalsomakesureto
removeblanklayersfromthefilesincetheytooincreaseitssize.Itisimportanttorememberthat
Photoshopdoesnotletyouseparatelayersaftermergingthem.Instead,youcaneitherusetheUndo
commandoryoucanusetheHistorypalettetoreverseamerge.
Ifyoudonotneedtofrequentlychangesomeofyourlayers,youmaywanttoconvertlayersorlayer
setsintoSmartObjects,tosavediskspaceandhelpincreasespeed.
Toflattenalllayersinafile,chooseLayer>FlattenImage.
Tomergealayerwiththelayerbelowit:
1. IntheLayerspalette,selectthelayerabovethelayerwithwhichyouwanttomergeit.
2. ChooseLayer>MergeDown.
FlatteningTIFFfiles

PhotoshopallowslayerstobesavedinTIFFfiles.LayeredTIFFfilesarelargerthanflattenedTIFFfiles
andrequiremoreresourcesforprocessingandprinting.IfyouworkwithalayeredTIFFfile,savethe
originallayeredfileasanAdobePhotoshop(.psd)file;then,whenyouarereadytosavethefileinTIFF
format,saveacopywithoutlayers.
Usingimagecompression

Althoughcompressedfilesgenerallyhavesmallerfilesizes,Photoshopmaytakelongertoopenorsave
them.TheBMP,CompuServeGIF,JPEG,Photoshop,PhotoshopEPS,PhotoshopPDF,andTIFFformats
canbesavedwithcompression.Inaddition,Photoshopenablesyoutospecifyacompressionmethod
forTIFFlayersintheTIFFOptionswindow.WhenyousaveintheTIFFformat,youhavetheoptionto
usetheZIPandJPEGcompressionmethods.ZIPcompressionislossless(nodatawillberemovedfrom
yourimage),anditcreatessmallerfiles,butthecompressionissignificantlyslower.JPEGcompressionis
lossy(datawillbepermanentlyremovedfromyourimage),thefilewillbelarger,butthecompression
willbefaster.
Whenyousavelayered16bitor32bitimagesinthePSD(Photoshopnative)fileformat,the
compressiontakessignificantlylongerthansavingflat16bitor32bitimages,or8bitimages.
TosaveanimagewithoutcompressionfromPhotoshop,chooseFile>SaveAs,selecttheformatyou
want,andthenselecttheNoCompressionoptionintheformatOptionsdialogbox.Forexample,select
theTIFFformat,andintheTIFFOptionsdialogbox,selectNoneforImageCompression.
Editingindividualchannels

Photoshoprequireslessmemorytoapplyafiltertoasinglechannelthanitdoestoapplyafilterto
multiplechannelsortoanentireimage(compositechannel).Inaflattenedimage,eachRGBchannelis
aboutonethirdthesizeofthefile;eachCMYKchannelisaboutonefourththesize.Toeditasingle
channel,selectthechannelyouwanttoeditintheChannelspalette.
UsingtheFilterGalleryandapplyingfilterstoindividualchannels

TheFilterGalleryinPhotoshopCS5andCS4allowsyoutotestoneormorefiltersonanimagebefore
applyingtheeffect(s),whichcansaveconsiderabletime.
Dragginganddroppingbetweenfiles

Dragginganddroppinglayersorfilesismoreefficientthancopyingandpastingthem.Draggingbypasses
theclipboardandtransfersdatadirectly.Copyingandpastingcanpotentiallyinvolvemoredatatransfer
andismuchlessefficient.

Bycustomizingyouroperatingsystemsoitrunsefficiently,younotonlyincreasetheamountofsystem
resourcesavailabletoapplications,butalsoensurethatyourapplicationsrunefficiently.Optimizing
yourharddriveandvirtualmemory,organizingorremovingtemporaryfiles,anddisablingunnecessary
applicationsrunninginthebackgroundimprovesperformance.
Checkyoursystemfordamagedfonts

IfthereisadamagedfontonyoursystemandyouhaveWYSIWYGfontpreviewturnedon,your
computercanslowsignificantly.Ifyouturnofffontpreviewandyourcomputerperformanceimproves
significantly,testforadamagedfont. Insomecases,damagedfontscancausePhotoshoptocrash,
whenFontPreviewisturnedon.
ToturnoffFontPreview:
1. ChooseEdit >Preferences>Type.
2. DeselectFontPreviewSize.
3. ClickOK.
Temporaryfiles

Whenyouworkinanapplication,acopyofyourdatafileisstoredtemporarilyontheharddrive.Many
applicationscreate.tmpfilesandthendeletethemwhenyouquittheapplication.Crashesorsystem
errors,however,maypreventanapplicationfromdeletingthesefiles.Thesefilescanbuildupovertime,
takingupdiskspaceandcausingproblems.Fromtimetotime,youshouldquitallprogramsandremove
alltemporaryfiles.Tosafelyremovetemporaryfilesandanyotherfilesthatarenolongerbeingused,
runDiskCleanup.
TorunDiskCleanup:
1. Dooneofthefollowing:
OnWindowsXP:ChooseStart>Programs>Accessories>SystemTools>DiskCleanup.
OnWindowsVista:ChooseStart,andtypeDiskCleanup intheSearchtextbox.SelectDisk
CleanupfromtheProgramslist.
2. Chooseadrivetocleanup,ifappropriate.
3. Choosetypesoffilestodelete.Youmayselectallfiletypestocleanyoursystemcompletely,but
youmustselectTemporaryFilesataminimum.
4. ClickOK.
5. Confirmthatyouwanttopermanentlydeletethesefiles.
Optimizinganddefragmentingharddisks

Overtime,thecomputer'sharddiskcanbecomedamagedorfragmented(unavailableinalarge
contiguousblock).Ifthereisnotenoughcontiguousspaceforthesystemtosaveafile,itsavespiecesof
thefiletodifferentlocationsonthedisk.Ittakesanapplicationlongertoreadafragmentedfilewhose
piecesaresavedinseverallocations.
Tooptimizeanddefragmenttheharddisk:UsetheDiskDefragmenter:
OnWindowsXP:ChooseStart>AllPrograms>Accessories>SystemTools>DiskDefragmenter.
OnWindows7andVista:ChooseStart,typeDiskDefragmenter intheSearchtextbox.SelectDisk
DefragmenterunderPrograms.
Windowsvirtualmemory

Virtualmemoryallowsyoursystemtouseharddiskspacetostoreinformationnormallystoredin
memory(RAM).Becauseittakeslongertoaccessinformationonaharddiskthanitdoestoaccess
informationinmemory,usingaportionoftheharddiskasvirtualmemorycandecreaseperformance.In
addition,Photoshopcannotusetheharddiskspacethesystemusesforvirtualmemoryforitsscratch
diskfiles,whichitusestostoreimageinformationasyouwork.Ifyouneedmorememorytoworkin
Photoshop,AdobeSystemsrecommendsinstallingmoreRAM.
SpecifyingafixedvirtualmemorysettinghelpspreventPhotoshopscratchdiskfilesfromcompetingfor
thesamespacewithvirtualmemory,especiallyifyousetthevirtualmemorysettingonadifferentdrive
thantheprimaryscratchdisk.Forbothkindsofvirtualmemory,besuretouseadrivewithenoughfree,
uncompressedspace.RAID0partitionsprovidethebestpossibleperformanceasPhotoshopscratch
disks.
IfyouuseadiskorRAIDarrayonlyforPhotoshopscratchdiskfiles,fragmentationisrarelyaconcern,as
theydon'tbecomesignificantlyfragmented.Fragmentationismuchmorelikelytobeanissueifyouuse
asinglediskforeverythingorifyouhavepermanentfilesandthePhotoshopscratchdisksharinga
volume,especiallyifthere'snotalotoffreespace.Inthiscase,defragmentingthediskcanmakea
significantdifference.

Seetheabovesection"Optimizinganddefragmentingharddisks"formoreinformation.
TochangeVirtualMemoryinWindowsXP:
1. Quitallapplications.
2. ChooseStart>Settings>ControlPanelanddoubleclickSystem.
3. ClicktheAdvancedtabandthenselectSettingsinthePerformancesection.
4. ClicktheAdvancedtab,andintheVirtualmemorysection,clickChange.
5. FromtheDrivelist,selectaharddrivethathas1.5timestheamountofyourcomputer'sinstalled
RAM.Forexample,ifyourcomputerhas2GBofRAM,selectaharddrivethathasatleast4GBof
freeharddrivespace.Forbestperformance,chooseaharddrivenotusedforthePhotoshop
scratchdisk(s).
6. InthePagingFileSizeforSelectedDrivesection,selectCustomsize,andintheInitialSizebox,
enteravalueequaltothetwicetheamountofyourcomputer'sinstalledRAM.
7. IntheMaximumSizebox,enteravalueequaltofourtimestheamountofyourcomputer's
installedRAM.
8. ClickSetandthenclickOK.
Note: Forthebestperformance,thePagingFileshouldbeonaseparate,empty,defragmented
harddisk.
9. ClicktoclosetheSystemControlPanelApplet.
10. TorestartWindows,clickYesintheSystemSettingsChangedialogbox.
TochangeVirtualMemoryinWindows7andVista:
1. Quitallapplications.
2. ChooseStart>ControlPanel,anddoubleclickSystem.
3. ChooseAdvancedSystemSettingsintheTaskslist.
4. SelecttheAdvancedtabandclickSettingsinthePerformancesection.
5. SelecttheAdvancedtabandclickChange.
6. Usuallyit'sbesttoallowWindowstomanagethepagingfile.However,forthebetter
performance,theWindowspagingfileshouldbeonadifferentharddiskfromthePhotoshop
scratchdisk.Tomanagethepagingfilemanually,setittoadifferentdrivefromthePhotoshop
scratchdiskbydeselectingAutomaticallyManagePagingFileSizeForAllDrives.
7. Clickeachharddisklettertoshowtheavailablespaceonthatdrive.Selectaharddrivethathas
threetimestheamountofyourcomputer'sinstalledRAMandthatdoesn'tcontainascratchdisk.
8. SelectCustomSize,andtypetheamountofyourphysicalRAMplus300MBintheInitialSizebox.
Type3timestheamountofyourcomputer'sinstalledRAMintotheMaximumSizebox.ClickSet,
andthenclickOK.ContinuetoclickOKtoexitalldialogboxes.
9. Restartyourcomputer:Ifyouhaveapplicationsopen,selectRestartLater,closeyourapplications,
thenrestartWindows.Otherwise,clickRestartNow.
Applicationsrunninginthebackground

SomeapplicationsmaycompeteformemorywithPhotoshopandcauseslowdownsorsystemerrors.
BeforestartingPhotoshop,disableotherapplications,includingstartupitems(itemsthatstart
automaticallywithWindows).
InWindowsXP:
Disablestartupitems:
1. Quitallapplications.
2. ChooseStart>Run,andtypemsconfig intheOpenbox.ClickOK.
3. ClicktheStartuptab,andclickDisableAll.
4. Selectanystartupitemsthatareessentialfortestingtheproblem.Ifyouareunsurewhetheran
itemisessential,leaveitdeselected(disabled).
5. ClickOK,andrestartWindows.
Note: DependingonsettingsintheSystemConfigurationutility,aSystemConfigurationutility
dialogboxmayappearaftertherestartaskingyouifyouwanttocontinueinSelectiveStartup
mode.Ifthisoccurs,clickOKoncetoclosethemessagedialogbox.ClickOKagaintoquitthe
SystemConfigurationutility.ClickExitWithoutRestart.
6. RightclickiconsintheNotificationArea(calledtheSystemTray inearlierversionsofWindows)to
closeordisableanystartupitemsthatarestillactive.
Then,trytorecreatetheproblem:

withPhotoshop.Reenablestartupitemsoneatatime,testingeachtimeuntilyoudetermine

Iftheperformancedoesn'tchange,startupitemsaren'tthecauseandyoucanreenablethem.
Toreenablestartupitems:

MaximizePSDFileCompatibility.ThisoptionhasbeenaroundinPhotoshopundera
varietyofnamesforseveralversions,anditcontrolswhetherPhotoshopwillincludea
hidden,compositelayeralongwiththeregularlayerswhenyousaveafile.The
compositelayerisessentially justasinglelayerthatrepresentswhattheimagewould
looklikewithallthevisiblelayersflattened. Thispreferenceisprimarilyforpeople
whoneedtousetheirlayeredPSDfilesinotherapplicationsthatclaimtoreadPSD
files,butthatreallyneedthatcompositelayerinordertodoso.Themainproblem
withthisoptionisthattheextracompositelayerwillmakeyourfilesizemuchlarger
upto33%larger thanitneedstobe.Whilethisisnotmuchofanissuewithsmall
files,itcanquicklybecomeabigissuewithlargerdocuments. Ifyoureonlyworkingon
