Procedures

Rationale:ThroughthedevelopmentofeffectiveHealthandSafetyprocedures,practicesandguidelines,asafephysicalandemotionalenvironmentcanbeachievedforallstudents,staffand
visitors.

Purpose:TheKaikoraiPrimarySchoolBoardofTrusteesiscommittedtoensuringthehealthandsafetyofallworkers,students,visitorsandcontractorsbycomplyingwithrelevanthealth
andsafetylegislation,regulations,NewZealandstandards,andapprovedcodesofpractice.

Inmeetingourcommitment,wewillcomplywithallrelevantlegislation,regulations,codesofpractice,andsafeoperatingprocedures,andwilloperatewith
continuousimprovement,andseekexcellenceinHealthandSafetypracticesateverylevelofouroperations.

TheBoardofTrusteesshall:

1.Provideasafephysicaland
emotional
environmentforstudents.

2.Complyinfullwithanylegislation
currentlyinforceorthatmaybe
developedtoensurethesafetyof
studentsandemployees.

EveryoneatKaikoraiPrimarySchoolisresponsibleforHealthandSafety.TheBoardisthePCBU
andthereforetakesoverallresponsibilityforHealthandSafety.Itcandelegatespecific
responsibilitiestothePrincipal
ThereforethePrincipalshall:

1.Takereasonablestepstoprotectstudentsfromunsafeorunhealthyconditions.

2.Provideasmokefreeenvironment.

3.EnsureaRiskAnalysisManagementSystem(RAMS)iscarriedoutwhereandwhenappropriate.
TheBoardwillsignoffonallschoolcampsandwaterbasedactivities.

4.Consultwiththecommunityregardingthehealthprogrammebeingdeliveredtostudents.

5.Provideprivacyofpersonaldocumentsheldatschool.

6.Allstaff,visitors,contractorsandstudentsarerequiredtotakeallpracticalstepstoensuretheir
ownsafetyandthatnoactionorinactionontheirpartcausesharmtoothers.
Thisincludes:
followallinstructions,rulesandprocedureswhileintheschoolgrounds
reportallinjuries,incidentsandnearmissestotheirteacherorotherstaffmembers
wearprotectiveclothingandequipmentasandwhenrequiredtominimiseyourexposureto
hazards.

7.Engageandconsultwithemployees,employeerepresentatives,subcontractors,suppliers,clients
andexternalexperts,asisappropriate,toencourageparticipationincontributingtomakingasafer
workplace.Theschoolwillmaintainahealthandsafetycommitteeconsistingofteacher
representatives,PrincipalandCaretaker.EveryoneisresponsibleforHealthandSafetyand
thereforeanypotentialriskscanbeidentifiedandaddedtotheHazardregister.Thehazardregister
willbereviewedbytheBoardatitsmeetings.

8.Thestaff,unionrepresentativeswillbeconsultedonhealthandsafetymanagement.Ifany
employeeorotherbecomesawareofapotentialhazardtheymustreportthisontheHazard
Register.Allstaffarerequiredtomakethetimelyandaccuratereportingofallincidents,
accidents,unsafeconditionsandnearmisses.

9.Theschoolwillhaveeffectiveproceduresformanagementofstudentandstaffsafetyand
welfare,emergencies,providingorientation,trainingandsupervisionforallstaff,thehiringand

10.TheBOTandmanagementarecommittedtocontinuousimprovementinhealthandsafety,
supportforthesafeandearlyreturntoworkofinjuredemployees,ongoingevaluation,reviewand
updatingofourcompliancewithhealthandsafetyrequirementsandlegislationandinvolvementof
staff,studentsandschoolcommunityinhealthandsafetyprogrammes.

11.TheBoardwillpromotehealthyfoodandnutritionforallstudents.Informationwillbe
providedtotheBoardthroughthehealthconsultationreport.

12.TheBoardwillreceiveinformationregardingseriousinjuriessustainedwhileintheschoolor
onschoolexcursions.

13.TheBoardwillhaveHealthandSafetyaspartofthePrincipalsReportatitsBoardmeetingsand
willhaveaccesstotheHazardRegister

14.TheBoardwillproviderecommendedhealthandsafetytrainingtoanystaffmemberwho
requiresit.

15.TheBoardwillensurethesafeoperatingoftheplantthroughregularmaintenanceand
inspections.

16.KaikoraiPrimarySchoolisasunsmartschoolandthereforetheBoardwillensureadequate
shadeandothermeasurestokeepthestaffandstudentssafefromthesun.

17.Reviewthispolicyonanannualbasisandreestablishkeysafetyobjectivesandtargetsthatwill
demonstrateacontinuingsafeplaceofwork.
