PROCEDURE FOR ROAD WORK

CONTACT NO: -

17614132 dated 28-07-2007 for combined Civil, Mechanical,

Electrical, & Instrumentation works at Kohand, Nabha and
Jalandhar stations of PJPL project.

PROCEDURE NO: - INDCON-PJPL-STN-PNP-CIVIL-21

1. For road work the earth shall be free from all roots grass, rubbish and
all lumps and clods exceeding 8 cm in any direction shall be broken.
2. Earth filling to be deposited in, shall be done in regular horizontal
layers, not exceeding 20 cm in depth.
3. The compaction of earth work shall be done under suitable moisture
conditions to give at least 95% of the maximum dry density.
4. For this purpose earth shall be spread in layers with sufficient water to
give a moisture content of about 1 to 2% more.
5. Each layer shall be compacted by breaking clods and compacting by
usage of rollers 8 to 10 ton capacity. Watering shall be done during
compaction. Unless otherwise specified degree of compaction
obtained shall be nearly equal to 95% proctor density.

Preparation Of Sub-Grade:The width for sub-grade formation shall be equal to the width of that of the
base course plus 15 cm on either side. It shall be cut to a depth equal to
combined depth of sub-base course and surface /wearing course below
the proposed finished level. The entire surface area shall be cleaned off
from all foreign substances. Any ruts or soft yielding places that may
appear due to improper drainage conditions, traffic hauling or from any
other clauses, shall be corrected and the sub-grade shall be dressed off
parallel to the finished profile.
The consolidation of the sub-grade shall be done with 8 to 12 tones power
road roller, till the soil is evenly and densely consolidated and behave as
an elastic mass. The rolling shall be done starting at edges and working
towards the centre of the road. In case of super elevated curve, the rolling
shall commence from the inside edge of the centre and progress towards
the outside edge. During rolling process, all the undulation formed shall be
made good with earth and finally sub-grade shall be rolled.

Sub-base course (Dry Macadam):Quantities of materials: Stone aggregate of sizes 90 mm to 45 mm shall

be used as sub-base. It shall be clean crushed coarse aggregate and shall
be free from all dirt, mud and other foreign materials.
The quantity of materials to be used for 100 mm compacted thickness of
sub-base & for 10 sq.m.area shall be as per below given table;
Material
Coarse aggregate 90 mm to 45 mm

Net quantity
1.28 cum

Stone aggregate(13.2 mm)

0.30 cum

Binding material

0.10 cum

Spreading of aggregate:The surface of the aggregate spread shall be leveled up & all high or low
spots rectified by removing or adding aggregate. Base course shall be laid
in layers so that finished thickness of each layer after rolling shall not
exceed 100 mm. Each layer shall be thoroughly consolidated with power
roller of minimum 8 tones weight, starting at edges and working towards
the centre. In case of super elevated curve, the rolling shall commence
from outside edge. Rolling shall progress gradually from the edge to the
centre line of the road & overlapping uniformly each preceding rear wheel
track by one half width & shall continue until the entire area of the course
has been rolled by the rear wheel. Rolling shall continue until the road
metal is thoroughly keyed with no creeping of metal ahead of the roller.

Base course (water bound macadam):Stone aggregate of the size 53 mm to 22.4 mm shall be used. It shall be
clean and free from all dirt, mud & other foreign materials. The quantity of
materials to be used for 75 mm compacted thickness of sub-base & for 10
sq.m. area shall be as per below given table;
Material
Net quantity
Coarse aggregate 53 mm to 22.4 0.96 cum
mm
Stone screenings (11.2 mm)
0.21 cum
Binding material
0.90 cum

Premix bituminous concrete:The surface of the W.B.M over which bituminous concrete shall be laid
shall be dry and free from loose particles and dirt. The work shall be
carried out only when the atmospheric temperature is 16 deg. C or above.
No bituminous material shall normally be applied when the road surface or
material is damp or when the weather is foggy or rainy. The consolidated
thickness of this bituminous material shall normally be 50 mm.
Bitumen shall conform to IS: 73. Premix carpeting shall be with paving
asphalt 80/100 heated & then mixed with solvent at the rate of 70 grams
per kg. Of asphalt. Straight run bitumen of penetration value 80/100
conforming to IS: 73 shall be used for tack coat. The temperature of the
bitumen at the time of mixing shall be in the range of 149 deg.c to
177deg.c. At no time shall bitumen be over heated. Temperature shall be
checked at regular intervals. The surface shall be raked off with steel
brush
The quantity of material to be used for 100 sq.m. shall be as under ;
a.
b.
c.

A tack coat of bitumen at the rate of 75 kg. Shall be applied.

About 6.74 cum of stone aggregate per 100 sq.m of road surface
shall be use.
Application of bitumen for the bituminous concrete shall be@56 kg
per cum of stone aggregate.

Preparation of mixThe aggregates shall be dry & heated suitably before these are placed in
mixers.
Mixing shall be done in two stages in a mechanical mixer or ordinary
mixing drum. The heated stone aggregate of specified size & proportion
shall be fed into the mixer to which 2/3 rd of the total specified quantity of
bitumen heated to the appropriate temperature shall be added. When the
stone metal is well coated, the sand in the specified proportion & then the
balance 1/3 rd quantity bitumen shall be fed into the mixer. Mixing shall be
continued until a homogeneous mix is produced & all particles are
uniformly coated with bitumen. The mix shall be immediately transported
in a suitable wheel vehicle. At the site the bituminous concrete mix shall
be laid in a specified thickness. Each layer of bituminous thoroughly
consolidated with power roller. A premix sand seal coat shall be applied
immediately, after laying the carpet.
