Ronnys Restoration Series

Part 2 48 to 78 Club Member Ron Marshall from Ole Skool Metal shares some of his
knowledge for those, less experienced car restorers amongst us.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------CHOOSING THE SMASH SHOP REPAIRER OR THE SPECIALIST RESTORER
Dont ignore the fundamental difference between a short-term crash repair, undertaken
under the protection and supervision of a large insurance company, and a long-term self
funded full restoration. The two tasks are totally different, and require a totally different
mind-set and business relationship.
The restoration of a valuable car carries the same pitfalls and costs as an expensive longterm housing renovation, when it involves a similar spectrum of very different trade skills,
especially where replacement panels and hidden structural parts are no longer available.
Handing over a car for a long-term full restoration, paying the bills without regular
supervision and checks, is just asking for trouble, and then expecting a completed car to
emerge to your satisfaction, is not realistic, no matter how good or careful the restorer is.
Choose between breaking down the tasks yourself and appointing individual experts and
supervising their completion, or handing the car over to a one-stop restoration service.
If you are overseeing individual tasks yourself, visit car shows and club displays of similar
vehicles to yours.
Get a feel for the different levels of workmanship, and ask who did what. Feedback is
remarkably consistent and the problem workshops soon emerge in this process. If a
specialist restorer has their own preferred outside suppliers for different tasks, check each
tradesman out anyway, and ask to see some of their work. If they have done the job
before, it is possible they might be the best for the job, but you may find someone else just
as good, who can do it cheaper, because they operate on a smaller scale or are in need of
the work.
The core of any restoration is the initial bodywork, as the vehicle will have to be dismantled
and stripped of paint to rectify major problems. Poor paint stripping techniques can leave
irreplaceable panels (and parts that should have been removed) permanently damaged.
Fabricating and welding in new panel sections requires considerable skill if the joins are not
going to act as rust traps. The only way to permanently rid a panel of rust, is to replace it,
with new metal, if the new metal is not butt welded into the original panel but is just left to
overlap it, then the overlap can act as a moisture trap and accelerate rust.
Experienced restorers often have a solution to avoid what caused the rust traps in the first
place. Get to know the various techniques and processes, so as you are conversant with the
issues and how your repairer/restorer is intending to address the issue. Ask him how, or
which way he is intending to fix/repair the rust issues (butt welded overlap). Ask him for
photographic proof after he repairs the rust or if he would mind if you came in to see how
he has repaired the rust once the new metal is welded in and before the repaired area is
covered up.

Most early Australian cars had little or no rust protection, and some had no paint at all in
the areas you couldnt see. The dilemma is whether to add the best of todays rust
protection measures, which would disqualify the car on originality grounds. Most
experienced restorers will have developed solutions to get around these problems, without
destroying the original feel.
Pinholes left in the body finish prior to the final paint, will not disappear with the paint, and
if they do, it will only be temporary. Body crease lines that look straight in matt primer, can
suddenly look very wavy when shiny.
Experienced restorers leave nothing to chance, not even the slightest blemish. They will
even coat certain panels in a shiny finish to check their work, before the final paint.
Who keeps track of each part after it leaves the car for overhaul, and makes sure it is the
same part that returns?
So prepare an inventory of what you intend to supply to the repairer/restorer, and only use
a repairer/restorer who is prepared to sign a detailed list of what you are handing over.
IT is too easy for a workshop to say they never saw a certain part if it is no longer with the
vehicle. So you should have all parts documented and signed for as to being there when
the vehicle arrived at the workshop or any parts that you take in at a later date you
should also have documented and signed for. This detailed and signed list of what parts
were there and what you have brought into the repairer/restorer can save both YOU and
the repairer/restorer from any issues that may arise at a later date regarding any items
that may thought to be broken damaged or missing.
Before finalising each repairer, map out the stages of each task, and who does what, at
what point. Seek several expert opinions on exactly what is needed to complete each task.
Do not just appoint repairers solely on price. If a task seems too cheap, it probably is
and you will only be asking for disappointment.
Dont just rely on recommendations based on restorations just completed within the last
two years. It is usually after this point, that short cuts of faulty work start showing through
the paint, or the plating.
Is the repairer/restorer passionate about what they are doing? Will they make the extra
phone call, or go through the archives to get it right? Or more importantly, take the time
to tell you they have hit a crossroad?
Its like looking for a good employee. You are not necessarily looking for formal
qualifications, but the people who have the experience, the expertise, the networks and
the common sense to come up with a solution, and give you the restoration job that you
are paying for, and the finish you are expecting.
