What is an application?

You may have heard people talking about using an application or an app. But what exactly
does that mean? An app is a type of software that allows you to perform specific tasks.
Applications for desktop or laptop computers are sometimes called desktop applications, and
those for mobile devices are called mobile apps. When you open an application, it runs inside
the operating system until you close it. Most of the time, you will have more than one
application open at the same time, and this is known as multitasking.
Types of desktop applications
There are countless desktop applications out there, and they fall into many different
categories. Some are more full-featured (like Microsoft Word), while others may only do one
or two things (like gadgets). Below are just a few types of applications you might use:

Word processors: A word processor allows you to write a letter, design a flyer, and
create many other types of documents. The most well-known word processor
is Microsoft Word.

Personal finance: Personal finance software, such as Quicken, allows you to keep
track of your income and expenses and create a budget, among other tasks. Most
personal finance programs can automatically download information from your bank
so you don't have to manually type in all of your transactions.

Web browsers: A web browser is the tool you use to access theInternet. Most
computers come with a web browser pre-installed, but you can also download a

Games: There are many different games you can play on your computer. They range
from card games such as Solitaire to action games like Halo 2. Many action games

you'll need to use a media player. Windows Media Player and iTunes are popular
media players.

Gadgets: Sometimes called widgets, these are simple applications you can place on
your desktop (or on the Dashboard if you're using a Mac). There are many different
types of gadgets, and they includecalendars, calculators, maps, and news headlines.

INSTALLING APPLICATIONS
In order to work, an application usually has to be installed on your computer.
Typically, installation is as simple as inserting the installation disc and following the
instructions on the screen. For software downloaded from the Internet, you can
usually double-click it after it is finished downloading and then follow the instructions on the
screen. Many applications include a readme file (for example, readme.txt), which includes
installation instructions and other information.

FILES AND APPLICATIONS

Each application on your computer has a group of file typesor formatsit is able
to open. You generally won't have to figure out which application will open your files. When
you double-click a file, your computer will automatically use the correct application to open
it, as long as the application is installed on your computer.
If you don't have the correct application installed, you may not be able to open the
file. However, in some cases you can open the file with a web application that runs in your
browser. For example, if you don't have Microsoft Word, you can open Word documents

MOBILE APPS
Desktop and laptop computers aren't the only devices that can run apps. You can also
download apps for mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, which opens up many new
possibilities. Here are a few examples of mobile apps:

Flipboard: Flipboard allows you to create a personal news feed by choosing topics,
authors, and publications you like. The app will keep track of what you like and
deliver content that interests you. You can even create your own online magazine for
other Flipboard users to read.

Wolfram|Alpha: Wolfram|Alpha is basically a giant searchable encyclopedia for any

kind of science, language, or math question you might have. You can access Wolfram|
Alpha on the Web or download the app for your mobile device, and the company
makes specific reference apps for different subjects as well. But the basic Wolfram|
Alpha app will give you access to data on the greatest number of subjects from your
tablet or phone.

make in-app purchases to access some functions. If your mobile device has an Internet
connection, you can download apps directly onto it. Otherwise, you can sometimes download
them to your computer and then transfer them over.
ABOUT PROJECT
The proposed system has been designed to overcome all the drawbacks found in the
existing system. The new system has been proposed to use VISUAL BASIC as front end and
MS Access as backend.
The proposed system has enhanced features, which was not found in the existing system. The
salient features are:

Security for the data is done easily.

Validation is done to enter correct data.

Memory consumption is very less and the processing speedis fast.

Data reports are presented in a neat format.

It is apt for this modern world.

It is easy to combine the database of other software and to view the records in the files
and also it is easy to get the reports by giving input data.

Easy to maintain records of indoor/outdoor patients.

Easy to maintain backup of data as per user requirements (between mentioned dates).

If user forgets his/her password then it can be retrieved by hint question.

The results of tests, prescription, precautions and diet advice will be automatically
updated in the database.

User or Administrator can search a patients record by his/her name.

Our project Hospital Management system includes registration of patients, storing their
details into the system, and also computerized billing in the pharmacy, and labs. Our software
has the facility to give a unique id for every patient and stores the details of every patient and
the staff automatically. It includes a search facility to know the current status of each room.
User can search availability of a doctor and the details of a patient using the id.

The Hospital Management System can be entered using a username and password. It is
accessible either by an administrator or receptionist. Only they can add data into the database.
The data can be retrieved easily. The interface is very user-friendly. The data are well
protected for personal use and makes the data processing very fast.
This project will automate the daily operations of Orchid hospital. The project keeps track of
the staff and patient (in-patient, out-patient) details. It also takes care of the ward, medical,
invoice and the doctors appointment details. The system generates the daily ward
availability, the status of the operation theatres and ICU.

HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT is an integrated Hospital Information System, which addresses

all the major functional areas of multi-specialty hospitals. The HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT
enables better patient care, patient safety, patient confidentiality, efficiency, reduced costs and
better management information system. It provides easy access to critical information thus
enabling the management to take better decisions on time. This project deals with processing
of each and every department in the hospital. This project sincerely aims to reduce the

manual processing of each department. The Scope of the project takes care of the details of
each and every department. These details gives the doctor, staffs, specialists and patient
details including their salary, attendance , doctors appointments and the billing system. The
details of Doctor and staff help the hospital to maintain the record of every person. Their
attendance details help them to know about their attentive presence while salary is calculated.
The billing system provides an efficient way for calculating bill details of the patients.

ABOUT VISUAL BASIC:

VISUAL BASIC is a high level programming language which evolved from the earlier DOS
version called BASIC. BASIC means Beginners' All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code. It is
a very easy programming language to learn. The code look a lot like English Language.
Different software companies produced different versions of BASIC, such as Microsoft
QBASIC, QUICKBASIC, GWBASIC ,IBM BASICA and so on. However, people prefer to
use Microsoft Visual Basic today, as it is a well developed programming language and
supporting resources are available everywhere. Now, there are many versions of VB exist in
the market, the most popular one and still widely used by many VB programmers is none
other than Visual Basic 6. We also have VB.net, VB2005, VB2008 and the latest VB2010.
Both Vb2008 and VB2010 are fully object oriented programming (OOP) language.
VISUAL BASIC is a VISUAL and events driven Programming Language. These are the
main divergence from the old BASIC. In BASIC, programming is done in a text-only

environment and the program is executed sequentially. In VB, programming is done in a

graphical environment. In the old BASIC, you have to write program code for each graphical
object you wish to display it on screen, including its position and its color. However, In VB ,
you just need to drag and drop any graphical object anywhere on the form, and you can
change its color any time using the properties windows.
On the other hand, because the user may click on certain object randomly, so each object has
to be programmed independently to be able to response to those actions (events). Therefore, a
VB Program is made up of many subprograms, each has its own program code, and each can
be executed independently and at the same time each can be linked together in one way or
another.

What programs can you create with Visual Basic 6?

With VB 6, you can create any program depending on your objective. For example, if you are
a college or university lecturer, you can create educational programs to teach business,
economics, engineering, computer science, accountancy, financial management, information
system and more to make teaching more effective and interesting. If you are in business, you
can also create business programs such as inventory management system, point-of-sale
system, payroll system, financial program as well as accounting program to help manage
your business and increase productivity. For those of you who like games and working as
games programmer, you can create those programs as well. Indeed, there is no limit to what

ABOUT MS ACCESS:
Microsoft Office Access, previously known as Microsoft Access, is a relational database
management system from Microsoft that combines the relational Microsoft Jet Database
Engine with a graphical user interface and software-development tools. It is a member of
the Microsoft Office suite of applications, included in the Professional and higher editions or
sold separately. In May 12 2010, the current version of Microsoft Access 2010 was released
by Microsoft in Office 2010; Microsoft Office Access 2007 was the prior version.
MS Access stores data in its own format based on the Access Jet Database Engine. It can also
import or link directly to data stored in other applications and databases.
Software developers and data architects can use Microsoft Access to develop application
software, and "power users" can use it to build simple applications. Like other Office
applications, Access is supported by Visual Basic for Applications, an objectoriented programming language that can reference a variety of objects including DAO (Data

4.1 FUTURE SCOPE

The proposed system is Hospital Management System. We can enhance this system by
including more facilities like billing system, inpatient room allotment for the admitted
patients and the stock details of medicines in the pharmacy.

Providing such features enable the users to include more comments into the system. This
System can also be enhanced so as to interconnect the head-office of the hospital with subdivisions.
This application can be easily implemented under various situations. We can add new features
as and when we require. Reusability is possible as and when require in this application. There
is flexibility in all the forms.

SOFTWARE SCOPE:

Extensibility: This software is extendable in ways that its original developers may not
expect. The following principles enhance extensibility like hide data structure, avoid
traversing multiple links or methods, avoid case statements on object type and distinguish
public and private operations.

Reusability: Reusability is possible as and when require in this application. We can update
it next version. Reusable software reduces design, coding and testing cost by amortizing
effort over several designs. Reducing the amount of code also simplifies understanding,
which increases the likelihood that the code is correct. We follow up both types of reusability:
Sharing of newly written code within a project and reuse of previously written code on new
projects.

 Understandability: A method is understandable if someone other than the creator of the

method can understand the code (as well as the creator after a time lapse). We use the
method, which small and coherent helps to accomplish this.
Cost-effectiveness: Its cost is under the budget and make within given time period. It is
desirable to aim for a system with a minimum cost subject to the condition that it must satisfy
the entire requirement. Scope of this document is to put down the requirements, clearly
identifying the information needed by the user, the source of the information and outputs
expected from the system.

4.2 SUMMARY

The HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM is a great improvement over the manual system.
The computerization of the system has speed up the process. In the current system, the front

office managing is very slow. The hospital management system was thoroughly checked and
tested with dummy data and thus is found to be very reliable.
