ame into Nigeria, one of their billboard adverts had a baby girl who had this h
uge grin on her face with the text, ‘Life is Beautiful’, another had a grown man
with a new born baby in his hands. But come to think of it, Life is really bea
utiful. A male specie preferably an Homo sapiens mates w
ith a female specie of his kind, fertilisation occurs and after about 40 weeks
of gestation, a baby is born. Isn’t that fascinating?. During this 40 weeks diff
erent things happen in the womb of the mother. After sexual intercourse, the win
ning sperm gets to the egg first. The zygote is formed after fertilization and l
ater goes to the uterus this its full development. At the later part of pregnan
cy, the baby’s head turns towards the direction of the mothers legs which it wi
ll be given birth to(except in breech babies). This has been planned by nature.
Some persons don’t agree that ‘Life is Beautiful’ maybe, maybe n
ot, they have something or someone to live for. That is when family becomes impo
rtant. Some persons have different philosophies of life. To some ,‘Life is not
a bed of roses’, to others, ‘Life is not fair’ and others, ‘In life, what you so
w you will reap’ and so on. Some even talk about the law of karma.
What is Life?
Life, according to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, the state of being
alive as a HUMAN BEING in this context. An average scientist says all living per
form the following functions; M-Movement in this contex
t means an act of moving from one place to another.
R-Respiration is the act of brea
thing.
N-Nutrition is the process by which living thin
gs receive the food necessary, It could also be termed as feeding.
I-Irritability is the ability to re
act to impulse from he environment achieved the nervous system.
G-Growth is the process of becom
ing larger through natural development.
E-Excretion is the act of discharging waste fro
m tissues or organs R-Reproduction is the act or process of p
roducing babies, young animals or plants.
D-Death is the end of life of e
very living thing. The human being (Homo sa
piens) is a living thing because it performs all these functions. The foetus in
the womb of its mother can perform these functions too. The ‘breath’ the foetus
takes in isn’t like the breath a person out of the womb will be. It is through t
he passage of blood in the lungs of the unborn offspring. The foetus moves by mo
ving its hands and legs. The feeding and excretion is done through the umbilical
cord. The reproductive system is going into completion. The foetus reacts to im
pulses outside the womb such as sounds, noise and so on. It is protected in the
amionic fluid against shock, its heart beats and of course, it can die.
What is ‘Beautiful’?
In this context, beautiful means pleasing to t
he senses or the mind. People say, ‘Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder’. What
is beautiful to me may be pretty to you perhaps cute. Nevertheless, Life is Bea
utiful to me but you may not agree. Life is a precious gift and it should be pre
served from the moment it is conceived till its death. Human Rights activists be
lieve that everyone has the right to live, right to grow, and of course choice.
We always have a choice even if it is between the devil and the deep blue sea. S
ome persons suffocate human life in unborn babies termed abortion. ASA, the Nige
rian contemporary artist who has won lots of awards both in Nigeria and abroad i
n her song ‘Jailer’ sang ‘Life is beautiful, don’t you think so too Mr Jailer’.
So, if you have problems no matter how huge or wide it may seem, suicide is not
an option because ‘when there is LIFE there is HOPE’.
Japan has the highest number of suicide cases in the world. Suicide doesn’t solv
e the problem at hand but only complicates it. These suicide cases contain an aw
ful number of teenagers. The children are the future. The King of Pop sang, ‘We
are the world, We are the children’. Checking the causes of broken home, the lo
ss of a child is one of the causes. Although, this is not the only cause it coul
d be due to relatives or erectile malfunction but lots of homes are broken becau
se a child was lost. This is because both parents handle the death differently
since no parent want to know the burial ground of his/her own child so, one deci
des to stay in bed and do nothing while the other decides to party hard, get dru
nk, drive under the influence of alcohol and probably die or go to jail . Sudde
nly they can’t bear each other anymore because the situation at hand made them c
hange. In sociology, this is termed mid-life crisis. It is true some persons
working for agencies go on suicide missions either to save one life or another a
nd end up dieing, soldiers fight in wars for a cause. People die trying to get a
job done while playing the superhero everyday but whatever qualification you gi
ve LIFE, IT IS REALLY, worth living. Enjoy your life because it is B-E-A-U-TI-FU
