Introduction and Methods

Inflammation is a physiological response followed by
an increase in inflammatory mediators as tumoral
necrosis factor (TNF-) and cellular migration as
neutrophyls. However, non-resolved inflammatory
processes can be involved in development of several
inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid
arthritis[1,2,3]. Coccoloba cereifera is an endemic plant
from Serra do Cip Minas Gerais. The ethanolic
extracts of this species presented anti-inflammatory
activity, reducing TNF- production by THP-1 cells
in previous studies. Therefore, in vivo antiinflammatory properties of this extract was evaluated
inducing acute inflammation by LPS (100 ng/cavity)
in Swiss mice left knee. After 1 h, three different
concentrations of the extract were administrated (10,
100 e 1000 mg kg-1) and PBS was the negative
control. After 12 h, periarticular tissue was removed
from the mice joint for evaluation of cytokines and
chemokines production as well as myeloperoxidase
(MPO) activity.

indirect indicator of neuthrophyls migration to

inflammation sites. Therefore, these extracts also
reduce cellular migration, which contributes to the
resolution of the induced arthritic processes.
Chemically, the ethanolic extracts of C. cereifera are
composed
majorly
by
flavonoids
and
proantocyanidins, which are extensively reported in
literature as anti-inflammatory compounds.

Conclusions
Ethanolic extracts of C. cereifera showed in vitro
and in vivo anti-inflammatory properties, along the
presence of fenolic compounds in its constitution.
Therefore, this species became a new great source for
new compounds to treat inflammatory processes as
arthritis.

Results and Discussion

At the highest concentration (1000 mg kg-1), the
ethanolic extracts of C. cereifera inhibited CXCL-1
and TNF-, 68,28 10.73% and 46.50 12.24%,
respectively, when compared to control. The
reduction of these mediators significantly improves
the resolution of inflammatory processes. Moreover,
at the same concentration, the ethanolic extracts
reduced in 62.5 09.13% MPO activity, which is an
