• To listen to a poem being read
• To select the best way to read a poem
• To use descriptive terminology to describe a fierce creature

Lesson Introduction (2-3 mins approx.) Resources

Lesson phase 1
(Share lesson outcomes with children, introduce key learning point, link to previous learning, set lesson
expectations)
We are going to hear a poem today on a fierce creature. Do you remember I
asked you all to think of a fierce creature and think of words you would use to
describe it? After we have heard the poem we are going to talk about some
fierce creatures and we are going to describe them.

Lesson phase 2 (10mins approx.)

(Part of lesson where teacher teaches, new material is outlined, demonstrated and explained)
Teacher reads the poem – Fierce Creatures to the class using different tones of
voice.
Discusses with the children what way they think was best and why?

Teacher takes all the descriptive words from the poem and makes a brainstorm
with them on the blackboard. Discuss the words with the children.

Lesson Development (15-20mins approx) Resources

Lesson phase 3
(The key section of the lesson. Children are given the opportunity to make personal sense of the material they
have encountered, information becomes learning. Time needs to be spent on activities and tasks that enable the
learners to manipulate and interrogate information in order to make sense of it.)
Children get to do a brainstorm of a fierce creature themselves. Will use words
like sharp teeth, angry eyes etc.
Focus of teacher interactions during learning phase
(Plan and describe what the teacher will do or who the teacher will work with once all the children have settled to complete their
tasks)
Teacher will assist less able children with thinking about words and with spelling words.
Teacher will oversee the rest of the class also.

Lesson Conclusion (5-10mins approx.) Resources

Lesson phase 4
(Review, reflect and summarise lesson, ensure children know what they know, cement learning and
understanding and ensure that it is remembered)
