Y MENTOR PICKENS COUNTY

The youth of Pickens County could greatly benefit from a positive role model in their life. Seeing this need, the YMCA has
partnered with Mentor Upstate and the School District of Pickens County to implement a top notch mentor program for
the students in our community. The mission of Y Mentor Pickens County is to partner businesses, churches and civic
organizations with elementary, middle and high schools in the Pickens County area to provide a framework of support to
help students achieve their potential and discover their strengths.
We are excited about this new program and would love for you to be a part of it! We are calling on individuals throughout
the community to step up and help impact a child or teens life. We believe positive life change happens through one on
one relationships and mentoring is the way to do it! Can you sacrifice just 30 minutes once a week during the school year
to transform the life of a child or teen? Yes, you can!
Please do not sit back and think that someone else will mentor, that you would not be good at this, or that you are not
needed. We need you our KIDS NEED YOU!
I really look forward to our time together It is
the highlight of my week! Brad Spivey, Mentor

OUR HOPE FOR THE FUTURE

The vision of Y Mentor Pickens County is to be able to
help every child/teen who could benefit from the
opportunity of having a mentor in their life. To achieve
this vision, we need partners to financially support this
great program, as well as people to step up and volunteer
their time.
Mentoring began in the Easley area schools and now,
thanks to support from generous donors, we will be able
to serve in the Pickens area schools in 2016-2017. With
the growing support from the community, we hope to
expand throughout all of Pickens County in the near
future.

I walk in every week with this notion that Im helping

change her days, but in the end she is the one really
changing my life! Katelyn Hardin, Mentor

We cannot make this

program work without
people like you that will
step up and volunteer
to be a mentor!
You might not believe you
will change the world by
investing in just one
student; but to that one
student, you have changed
their world!

I like being a mentor because I feel I can make a

difference in his life. As Malcom Gladwell said in his
book The Tipping Point There may be an event or
person in your life that changes your direction.
Hopefully I can be that tipping point for him.
David Foster, Mentor

Every week that I am able to come has just been a

blessing...for both of us This is what it is all about!
Debbie Alley, Mentor

MY Y MEMBERSHIP
Our hope is that the Y is more than just a place to come and workout. We want it to be about the experience
you have and the endless possibilities to be a part of something more than just a gym. Our YMCA has
something to offer for all ages. At the YMCA we strive to change lives by providing the tools for people to lead
a healthier lifestyle and by offering a variety of classes and programs where you can meet new people who
share the same interests. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Open to All - Income Based

As a non-profit, we want everyone to be a part of the YMCA,
regardless of race, gender, beliefs, age or income. Because of
that, we have pricing based on your specific situation.
Your membership rate is adjustable based on your total
household income, number of adults and number of children
on the account. The rates listed here are for those whose
household income is $45,000 or more per year.
Please visit our website to see what your specific pricing will
be. The pricing will be good for 24 months from the time the
membership begins.
In order to adjust your rate, you must present a current tax
return to verify household income at the time you join and
again every two years. Accepted documents for income
verification include the 1040, 1040EZ or 1040A. A staff
member will view line 22 of your 1040, line 4 of your 1040EZ
or line 15 of your 1040A. For more details, view our FAQs
online.
If you are not required to file taxes, please present a statement
of non-filing, which can be obtained for free by calling
1-800-829-1040 or visiting the IRS website.
In those cases where the most recent tax return does not
reflect the current circumstances, you can submit your story
and situation online so that we can help you in any way we can.
Please visit www.pcymca.net/membership.php

MY Y IS EVERY Y
As a member of our YMCA, you can always visit another
YMCA in over 2,000 communities across the country.

you when you travel.

What does camp mean to you?

Both of my granddaughters had an
opportunity to attend summer camp at
the Y in Pickens; the experience brought
them closer together. To me it meant, new
adventures, being introduced to the
outdoors, sports and team building. Na'Ja
loves devotion as well as experiencing
what nature and the outdoors has to
offer. NaJas willingness to learn and
excitement about attending the camp &
after school programs - just the way she
lights up - that makes me happy.

In Y Swim Lessons, participants learn and practice new

swimming skills and feel a sense of achievement from
mastering something new that they can enjoy the rest of their
lives. While participating in fun water sports and games,
children also increase their physical activity levels. Participants
in Y Swim Lessons are connected to others in the class, make
new friends and recognize new role models. The participants
are more comfortable and secure around water, as they learn
water safety and improve their swimming skills. Children form
a stronger bond with their parents and family members from
take home activities and sharing water safety tips.

allowing students to achieve
success on a regular basis. Our
lessons help children become
comfortable in the water, achieve
basic water safety, and introduce
fundamental skills. Because it is

in the water is a large part of the
program. We want your child to

The Parent/Child Program is unique in that it reaches

children and parents early in their relationship. Parents
participate in the water with their child and are given
guidance on how to develop their childs abilities and how
to protect their child from harm in, on, and around the
water; children are given the chance to explore a new
environment and to build skills that add to their selfconfidence. Both benefit from taking part in an experience
that lets them learn and have fun together in the water.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

WHAT DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BRING?
Children who are not potty-trained need to wear a swim diaper.
Long hair needs to be tied-back to help them swim without the
distraction of hair in the face. Although not required, we
suggest that girls wear a one piece suit so that they do not
have to adjust it while swimming.
CAN I WATCH MY CHILDS LESSON?
Yes! We require that parents stay during lessons but ask that
parents stay within the seating areas so that the children are
not distracted.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING BAD WEATHER?
The decision to cancel classes due to inclement weather will
be made as early as possible. We will notify you of any
cancellations as soon as we can.
All sessions have 2 inclement weather make up dates set in case
classes are cancelled. However, the YMCA can only guarantee 6
classes per session. Inclement weather make-up days are
typically on Fridays, same time.

WHAT IF MY CHILD CANNOT PARTICIPATE?
Once a session has begun, if the child is pulled out of the class
by the parents/guardians, the YMCA will only issue a credit. No
refunds will be issued.
WHAT IF WE MISS A CLASS?
Refunds and/or make-up classes will not be offered for missed
classes.
WHAT IF MY CHILD IS AFRAID OF THE WATER?
If your child is fearful of water, our instructors will be limited
in their ability to help during group lessons. Most fears come
from a lack of exposure to water, resulting in uncertainty of
the water. In order for children to learn to swim, they must be
willing to attempt the skills that are being taught.
We recommend helping your child get adjusted to water by
playing in the bathtub. Water on and around a childs face can
be an overwhelming experience the first time it happens. Help
them prepare before they arrive at lessons. Also consider
private swim lessons for one on one attention.

Things to Know
Throughout the duration of the party, there will be a YMCA staff member who will assist with set up, clean up and any other needs
your party may have. The YMCA Party Host is available to serve food, cut cake and provide games. They are there to serve you and
your guests, so please don't hesitate to ask for assistance. Once registered, please be sure to stop by the Member Services desk to
pick up your pool party packet with invitations inside. Additional fees will apply for parties with additional swimmers as compared to
numbers listed. At the beginning of each party, swimmers will be swim tested to ensure their safety. Life jackets will be provided for
those that qualify. If a party host brings more swimmers than registered for, the lifeguards may require limited swimming. The host
will be responsible for any damages during the party.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING
During the Spring, we host several lifeguard trainings for
employees and community members. We use the Red Cross Lifeguarding
Program to officially certify lifeguards. Participants must be 15 years old
on or before the final scheduled session of this course. Before the class,
participants must swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath
control and rhythmic breathing. They may swim using the front crawl,
breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is
not allowed. Participants must also be able to retrieve a 10 pound object
from the bottom of the pool and swim to the side using only their legs.
They should be able to tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Swim
goggles may be used. If the participant does not pass the course, a
refund will not be issued nor will there be discounts for another course.
COURSE FEE:
$175 Includes all Supplies

BETHLEHEM RIDGE SOCCER CLUB

We are constantly working to provide our community with more opportunities for better
programs. We want to give the kids in our community the ability to be more competitive and
play at a higher level. Because of this we have introduced our very own soccer club which
started August 2015! For more information please email us at BRSC@pcymca.net.
We know that not everyone is looking for a more competitive program that requires a greater
commitment. Our Academy Program is in addition to our in-house Recreation League. These
programs operate at different times, so please pay attention to registration dates.

ACADEMY
Our Jr. Academy allows our players the chance to play
against other competitive teams in our surrounding
areas. This is a great opportunity for our youth to take
their skills to the next level.
Academy season is a year long commitment, with practice
beginning in June 2016 and the season ending in May

FALL LIL ROOKIES

Lil' Rookies is a six week program designed to give your child a head start into the world of sports. In this program,
your child will learn the basics of Baseball, Basketball and Soccer in a non-competitive environment (two weeks for
each sport).
Each session will end with a talk to these young athletes about one of the YMCA's core values: Faith, Caring, Honesty,
Respect and Responsibility. These values will help start your child to not only have a bright future in sports, but will
begin developing their character as well.
The last day of the session will run a little longer to have an awards ceremony where each child receives a certificate of

What is childhood obesity?

Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that
occurs when a child is well above the normal weight for
his or her age and height. Childhood obesity often starts
children on the path to health problems that were once
confined to adults, such as diabetes, high blood pressure
and high cholesterol. Childhood obesity can also lead to
poor self-esteem and depression.

What are the causes of childhood obesity?

Lifestyle issues too little activity and too many calories
from food and drinks are the main contributors to
childhood obesity. However, genetic and hormonal factors
may play a role as well.

What can we do to fight childhood obesity?

One of the best strategies to reduce childhood obesity is
to improve the diet and exercise habits of your entire
family. Try a group wellness class or go swimming together. Take your children grocery shopping with you and
allow them to pick out a new fruit or vegetable to try.
YMCA youth programs all focus on getting children active
and teaching them healthy lifestyle principles.

YMCA ANNUAL CAMPAIGN

FOR A BETTER US
At the Y, we believe everyone, regardless of their financial situation, should have the opportunity to participate in the life
changing experiences of the YMCA services and programs. Each year, the Pickens County YMCA scholarships thousands
of dollars to families and children in need in our community and we could not do this without your help!
Last year we gave out $145,000 and only raised $97,500. This year our goal is to raise $125,000! With your help,
this will be possible! Give today! Email give@pcymca.net if you would like to be a part of impacting the community.

Because of you, youth experience

achievement, relationships and belonging.
Alina, a single mother, left an abusive relationship to find hope
for both herself and her children at the YMCA. "My children
are much happier at camp. They love learning about what Christ
can do for them. Because of the Y, Alina's children were able to
turn their pain into happiness and start their journey to healing.

Because of you, youth find confidence and joy.

Gary Mohr, Principal at McKissick Elementary School said, Ive had
conversations with several parents that said their children have shown
more confidence since beginning the lessons Id like to believe that
by building the students confidence in one area, swimming, that their
confidence in other areas will grow.

Because of you, youth achieve their

potential and discover their strengths.
Superintendent Dr. Danny Merck states, "Many of our students
are identified as at-risk and would benefit from a positive oneon-one relationship with an adult."

TOGETHER, WE CAN DO MORE

I GIVE TO THE Y BECAUSE..
From encouraging a healthy lifestyle to Y Mentor to Camp
iRock, I give to the Y because of the impact it has on our
community for generations to come.
Rep. Neal Collins
I give to the Y because the programs that are offered have
the ability to change lives, one child at a time. I give to the Y
because it promotes a healthy lifestyle and Godly principles
that positively impact the children and families in our
community.
Sandy Chafin
I donate to the Y because my children were fortunate enough
to be able to attend summer camp and if I can help provide that
experience for another child I think its a worthwhile cause.
Jayne Morowitz
I give to the YMCA because we put the gospel of Jesus Christ
into action, in practical, real ways, to make our communities
healthier, happier and more complete. When I give to the Y
that money is used right here. It is an investment in my
neighborhood that we know pays tremendous dividends. Also,
when we educate, motivate, and encourage healthy lifestyles we
also save future generations millions of healthcare dollars.

VOLUNTEERISM
BENEFITS OF VOLUNTEERING
With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, the benefits of volunteering are enormous
to you, your family, and your community. The right match can help you find friends, reach out to the
community, learn new skills, and even advance your career. Volunteering can also help protect your mental and
physical health.
Decreases risk of
stress and depression.

Increases
life expectancy.

Why do I coach?
The very first practice for my soccer team I worked on
dribbling the soccer ball. I noticed Aubrey was upset and
being hard on herself. She did not want to be on the
field or be a part of anything soccer. She told her mother
that she was no good at soccer and that she didnt like
it. The next week we
practiced dribbling
again, and this time
I came alongside
Aubrey and dribbled
with her. She started
loving the soccer
drill. After practice, I
heard Aubrey tell her
mom that she loved
soccer and didnt
want to leave. It was
a blessing to see
what a difference it
made to do the
soccer drills with Aubrey. The support of her teammates
and I changed Aubreys outlook on soccer. Aubrey now
looks forward to playing in practice and in games. Its
great to see soccer boost the confidence level of a child
and make them feel like they belong to a team.
