PROJECT
Civil constructions-I
DESIGN SUBJECT:
INDIVIDUAL DWELLING BUILDING
(B + G + 1 Fl.)
I A I , 2015 - 2016 -
1. Design theme
The project proposed by Civil Constructions 1 discipline consists in preparing the technical
documentation for constructing an individual dwelling, placed in an urban area, having
favourable conditions for connecting to utility networks (water, sewer, electricity, gas). The
height regime is B+G+1Fl, namely basement (partial or total), ground floor and first floor as
inner garret (by RO, S+P+M) or outer garret (by RO, S+P+1E).
The students must modify the architectural layouts in order to respect the structural safety
under loads. The structure is a rigid one made by masonry structural walls strengthened by
concrete columns and girdles. It is assumed that the floor slabs are monolith reinforced concrete
elements. The roof system is a pitched timber support with 2 or more slopes. The stairs may be
made by reinforced concrete. The foundations will be designed as rigid continuous beams made
of monolith concrete.

Loads evaluation
Permanent loads
Loads
Variable loads
In accordance to the Ultimate Limit State (U.L.S) the effect of the following loading
combination will be consider:
1.35Gk,j+1.5QK,1+1.50,iQk,i
where :
Gk,j-represents the sum of characteristic permanent loads
QK,1-represent the dominant characteristic variable loads
Q k,i represent the sum of all the other characteristic loads
1.35Gk,j is the sum of characteristic design permanent loads
1.5QK,1 is the dominant design variable loads
1.50,iQk,i is the sum of all the other design variable loads
The coefficients that make the difference between tha characteristic and design loads are
called safety coefficients and their value differs depending on the type of load, namely:
F=1.35 partial safety coefficient for permanent loads
F=1.5-partial safety coefficient for variable loads
0,i=0.7-reduction factor for variable actions combinations
1. Permanent loads
-given by the self weight of the building elements
-constant value, calculated on the basis of nominal dimension and specific
weight
For outer garret the self weight of the following building element needed to be
considered:
Roof(covering+timber elements)
Last floor with thermal isulation
1st floor above (unheated/heated) basement
Staircase
Outer and interior load-bearing masonry walls
Basement walls
For inner garret the self weight of the following building elements need to be
considered:
Roof (covering+timber elements+thermal insulation)
1st floor above(unheated/heated) basement
Staircase
Outer and interior load-bearing masonry walls
Basement walls

-imposed loads on buildings, arising from occupancy
-given by:
Normal use by people
Furniture and other movable objects
Anticipating rare events, such as concentrations of persons or furniture,
stacking, objects
Considered as uniformly distributed loads, line loads or concentrated
loads or a combination of them
Category of specific use of the areas : A areas for domestic and residential
activities
Corresponding live loads in accordance with the category of the building :

Structural engineers always pay the needed consideration when designing the
structural system of a building to the way that loads are transmitted to the
ground. Thus, the loads transfer is ensured through the structural system to the
foundations and their distribution to the foundation soil.
The gravitational loads acting on the slab discharge as follows: first the slab
discharges on the stiffening girdles, and then they pass on the loads to the
vertical elements, namely the structural walls.
