Welcome
Welcome to GBE: 803 Enterprise Information Communications Technology! This
is an exciting modern paper and I hope you find it very helpful in your
professional life in understanding your own communication style and in
developing effective communications for your chosen enterprise.

Aims & Objectives


Aims

To provide students with a framework to understand, analyse and apply


communications.

To develop students understanding of the latest ICT trends affecting


communications.

To develop students ability to assess the applicability of contemporary e-/mcommunication technologies to their businesses.

To assist students in developing an effective communication style at a one


to one (interpersonal) level, with groups/teams and at an organisational
communication level.

Objectives
On successful completion of this paper, students will be able to:
1. Describe the dimensions and levels of communication and discuss the main
components of at least one model of communication. Students will also be
able to identify different types of barriers to communication.
2. Discuss how personal perception is formed and the impact of this on
communication.
3. Understand key tools in becoming a master communicator.
4. Describe how technology has impacted business communication both
positively and negatively and examine the applicability to SMEs of current
and emerging e-/m-communication technologies.
5. Articulate the main interpersonal communication skills required by the
entrepreneur, including listening, giving feedback, effective questioning to
elicit information and conflict management.
6. Understand the dynamics of effective teams and be able to manage
meetings (face to face meetings, teleconferences, online meetings) and
deliver presentations effectively.
7. Describe the purpose of organisational communication including vision,
mission and value statements. Discuss the entrepreneurs role in creating an
ethical enterprise and a positive organisation culture and climate.

Course Content
This paper comprises 6 topics, which are presented in a sequence that will
promote efficient learning, and link to the relevant assignments.
1. Communication Fundamentals - This topic examines the various
modes of communication and introduces communication models; the
topic continues with an exploration of the ways in which people may
influence, enhance and present barriers to effective communication.
2. Intrapersonal Communication This topic examines how perceptions
are formed and how perception filters influence our view of the world.
The topic examines one of these filters in more detail culture- and
introduces a model for understanding cultural differences. The topic
concludes with a focus on self-awareness and its importance in becoming a
master communicator.
3. Technology & e-/m-communications This topic examines the ways in
which ICT has impacted on the contemporary business environment. It
explores the benefits and pitfalls of some modern e-/m-communication
tools and their applicability to SMEs and establishes guidelines for
evaluating ICT.
4. Interpersonal Communication This topic explores the key skills of
interpersonal communication including introducing models in areas such
as: listening, giving and receiving feedback, questioning and negotiating.
Networking strategies and tactics are included for building successful
business environment.
5. Group/Team Communication This topic explores group and team
dynamics, including the various stages of team formation and function and
key communication considerations at each phase. The topic then examines
barriers to effective team communication and principles that underpin high
performing teams. Two core skills of group communication are then
explored: effective meeting management and presentation skills.
6. Organisational Communication This topic examines the various ways
in which organisations communicate. It focuses on how organisations
communicate their strategic direction and also how they communicate
through their culture, ethics and communication climate. Mechanisms for
establishing an ethical and effective culture and climate are discussed.
7. Special Communication This topic covers several important areas in
internal and external communication: managing conflicts, crises
communication, handling customer complaints, etc. It introduces NVC and
moderating techniques for effective problem solving.

Late Assignment Policy


A) All assignments must be handed in by the due date. An assignment handed
in after the due date will incur a penalty unless:
i
Your performance has been affected by factors beyond your control,
such as illness, injury, childbirth or bereavement (proof is required); and
ii
The lecturer has agreed to extend the time for completion of the
assignment.
B)

An assignment handed in late, where an extension of time has not been


granted by the lecturer, will incur a penalty of 20% of your total marks for the
first working day and 10% for each subsequent working day after due date.

Paper Expectations
1. 100% attendance at classes and completion of all assessments is required.
Students must ensure they can be present at the presentation

alternative arrangements are not possible.


2. Punctual attendance is necessary to avoid wasted time and disruption to
other students.
3. Time dedicated to this course should be 100 hours 21 hours will be
class contact hours this includes lectures and group presentation time.
This means that each student is expected to complete at least 79 hours
of study outside the classroom.
4. Teaching and learning between students is encouraged. However,
evidence of collusion may result in marks being downgraded or omitted
from formal assessment marks; refer to SITs Plagiarism Policy in your
student handbook.
5. Students are responsible for their own learning and should actively
participate in this process; therefore contributions to class discussions
are expected. Every student is expected to participate in the class
activities. It is a requirement that students treat other class members
with respect so that all students can freely explore ideas and ask
questions without fear of being embarrassed or put down.
6. Students should bring to lectures all the necessary course materials and
equipment including the textbook, laptop or smartphone, etc. according to
tutor instructions.
7. Students are expected to have read the section of the text and any
additional material that will be covered in a lecture before attending the
lecture, so as to enable maximum contribution to group discussions.
8. Classroom etiquette - phones must be turned off during all classes unless
stated otherwise. Students are expected to listen and interact in an
appropriate manner. Students who disrupt a lecture by speaking while
the lecturer is speaking may be asked to leave the classroom.
9. Presenting the ideas of others without giving recognition to the author
(plagiarism) is forbidden and will face strict penalties; refer to SITs
Plagiarism Policy in your student handbook.
10.
Students who hand in work completed in part or in whole by other
persons, whether for money or not, will face severe penalties.

There are two options how you can compose your video-card:
1. A personal business card for recruitment purposes
2. An elevator pitch for your potential business investor
In both cases you should:
o Introduce yourself/your business
o Formulate your key message
o Describe briefly your history, strengths and ambitions
o Stress how you/ your business is different and unique and how you can
help your potential employer/customers
The video has to be supported by 4-8 slides. Other tools or other visual support is
optional.
There is an option to use your video-CV for real job search. If you want SIT to contact
potential employers and provide them your video-CV, please do not forget to approve
it in the video form.

Your tasks are:
To identify adequate amount of communication content and agree on
performing communication research there.
The research should use content analysis methods/Methodology research
approach.
Identify and discuss the key findings, set a conclusion, and provide
recommendations.
Your report should include:
