INDUSTRIAL CHALLENGE 2016

The 7th Industrial Challenge
Global Value Chain towards Sustainable
Development
INDUSTRIAL CHALLENGE 2016
Industrial Challenge (INCHALL) 2016 is an
Industrial Engineering competition among colleges in
South East Asia which is held annually and fully hosted
by Himpunan Mahasiswa Teknik Industri, Sepuluh
Nopember Institute of Technology. The competition is
made for several purposes, such as applying the core
competences of Industrial Engineering knowledge,
the ability of student to solve industrial problem with
several consideration that may affect the whole
system,

and

supporting

knowledge

and

insight

exchange among the participants of the competition.

The main topic that will be discussed on
INCHALL

2016

is

Global

Value

Chain

towards

Sustainable Development. This topic will mostly discuss

about a value chain of a company and all the
measurement on each subsystems. The student should
have an ability to create a decision regarding to the

problem that may happened on each of them. In this

completion, participant will face real cases that
happened on an industry that can be solved by
analyzing the value chain and conduct the optimal
improvement on each subsystem.

THEME:

GLOBAL

VALUE

CHAIN

TOWARDS

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Value chain represents the idea of seeing a
company as a system consists of subsystems each with
inputs, transformation processes, and output. Inputs,
transformation processes, and outputs involve the
consumption of resources such as money, labor,
materials,

equipment,

land,

administration,

and

management.
Value

chain

activities

are

carried

put

determines cost and affects profits. There are some

activities done which are including the primary
activities and also the support activities. These
activities can be classified generally as either primary
or support activities that all business must undertake in
some form.

Figure 1. Company's Value Chain

According to Porter (1985), the primary activities are:

Inbound Logistics - involve relationships with
suppliers and include all the activities required to
receive and store inputs.

Operations - are all the activities required to

transform inputs into outputs

Outbound Logistics - include all the activities

required to collect, store, and distribute the
output.

Marketing and Sales - activities inform buyers

about

products,

to

induce

customers

purchase it, and facilitate their purchase.

to

Service - includes all the activities required to

keep the product working effectively for the
customer after it is sold and delivered.

Secondary activities are:

Infrastructure planning, consists of functions or
departments such as accounting, legal, finance,
planning, public affairs, government relations,
quality assurance and general management.

Technological Development - related to the

equipment, hardware, software, procedures and
technical knowledge in the firm's transformation
of inputs into outputs.

Human Resource management - consists of all

activities involved in recruiting, hiring, training,
developing,

compensating

and

laying

off

workers.

Procurement - is the acquisition of inputs, or

resources

SEMIFINAL
The semifinal stages will be held on 1st 5th
March 2016 in Surabaya. It will takes place in the
campus of Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology.
Semifinal stage will consist of two stages, which are:

Stage 1: Bid Your Time!

Bid your Time! Is the first stage that will be held for
all semifinalist teams of INCHALL 2016. In this
stage, every team will have to solve the
problems

that

science-based

industrial

engineering courses including ergonomics and

design work systems, manufacturing systems,
system

development

and

management

of

industrial, computation and optimization industry

as

well

as

logistics

and

supply

chain

management. In solving the problems, the

participants have a limited-time based on the

"auction game" which will be carried out before

solving the problems.

Stage 2
It is the end of semifinal round in INCHALL 2016.
This

stage

aims

to

be

the

assessment

consideration for selecting teams that pass to

Final

Stage

in

which

the

score

will

be

accumulated with Stage 1 score. This stage

includes case study that is compulsory to be
finished by all semifinalist teams for around five
hours. Each team has to be assured of having
deeper understanding in the whole theme as a
key to finish the case study
In this stage, the participants will be tested for
their braveness, analytic, and communication skill,
and also their dexterity in Industrial Engineering
sciences. The top 5 teams that pass through these
stages will be qualified for the Grand Final stage.
All of INCHALL 2016 participants are also
invited to join Gala Dinner that will be held on June
5th, 2015. This Gala Dinner aims to create networking
between participants and to introduce Surabaya in
the form of culinary and historical aspects.

GRAND FINAL
This is the last stage of INCHALL 2016. In this
stage, participants are required to understand the
problems of existing industries and solve it through
industrial engineering's perspective. Best five teams
who qualify at this stage would face a real problem
associated with "Global Value Chain" through visits to
particular industry in Indonesia. Teams are expected
to provide solutions or recommendations related to
the issue. Proposed solution will presented to the
judges who are coming from academic and industrial
background. One team with the best proposed
solution would be the winner of INCHALL 2016.
