The three were set free by high court

as the trial of the bombing suspects
came to an end. Two Ugandans Dr.

found no evidence to implicate them in Ummah Foundation secretary general and chairman of 3Z Foundation Zool Nimji officiating the ground breaking ceremony of a classroom block of Al Noor Academy at its

Justice for renditioned Kenyans

After the acquittal of the deputy President William Ruto, President Uhuru Kenyatta was categorical that no Kenyan will
ever be tried outside the country as he
affirmed that they were sufficient laws
in the country to guarantee a free and
fair trial for citizens facing trial in foreign
countries.
To demonstrate that the government
was true to its word, the Attorney General Githu Muigai asked the International
Criminal Court (ICC) which had issued
arrest warrant for two Kenyans said to
have compromised witnesses during the
trial of the deputy president to hand over
the files to the Kenyan government to facilitate their possible trial in the country.
As the President made the pronouncement during a prayer rally in Nakuru
called to celebrate the acquittal of Ruto,
seven Kenyans were languishing in jail in
the neighbouring Uganda facing a judiciary process which has been criticized as
nothing short of fairness.
The Kenyans had earlier been kidnapped
from the country by Kenyan security
agencies in an open travesty of the judicial system and shuttled off to Uganda
in a rendition programme which sparked
off protests from the judiciary, parliament,
human rights organisations and the Mus-

lim community.
Their detention was characterized by
claims of torture and violations of their
rights and when the trial came years later,
its credibility was under question.
Last week, the high court made its ruling
finding three Kenyans and two Ugandans
innocent of the terrorism crimes, murder
and attempted murder and ordered their
release. Presiding judge Alphonse Owiny
Dollo also convicted eight individuals who
included four Kenyans, three Ugandans
and a Tanzanian after he found them guilty
of playing a role in the 2010 twin bombing
attacks.
In a move which brought further questions
on the impartiality of the judiciary system
in the neighbouring country, the freed persons were rearrested for what the Ugandan authorities initially said was for their
safety and also to facilitate their deportations back to Kenya.
The foreign affairs cabinet secretary Amina Muhammad came out to clarify without
giving details that there are ongoing talks
between the two governments on the fate
of the released Kenyans giving hope that
justice will be observed.
Six days later, Uganda police issues statement stating that the five people declared

innocent by the high court were charged

with fresh allegations of terrorism and related conspiracies in a lower court. Strangely
the new charges are for crimes allegedly
committed during their time at the heavily
guarded Luzira maximum prison.
The unfolding events just shows that there
is clear trajectory of injustice being perpetrated against the Kenyans and what is disturbing is that there is no clear response
from the government to demonstrate that
it is ready to stand up to the rights of its
citizens.
The government spent hundreds of millions of shillings on the cases of the deputy president and erstwhile the president
who were facing charges much worse that
those alleged committed by the renditioned
Kenyans and has committed itself to spend
resources to protect Kenyan citizens who
have been issued with arrest warrants by
ICC but sadly, a double standard approach
is what is being seen in the case of its citizens in Uganda.
As the head of state affirmed that the government will not relent in the face of injustices being perpetrated against its citizens
in a foreign land, we remind President Uhuru to honour his pledge and ensure that
the renditioned Kenyans are not treated
unjustly.

provide further details on their appearance in court.
After their detention, the Kenya chapter
of the International Commission of Jurists

The executive director of International
Commission of Jurists (ICJ) Kenya chapter Sam Muhochi condemned the re-arrest
terming it illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional.
In a press release issued last Friday,
Muhochi said the detention was a violation of the court orders issues by high
court Judge who had set them free. It
adds to the long list of violations occasioned against the five since their first arrest while intensifying not only their pans
and suffering but also the untold grief and
apprehension of their families, he said.
The lack of good faith by Uganda authorities raised suspicions of their motives
especially in a region struggling to fight
terrorism and where counter terrorism
measures continue to violate the rights of
citizens, he added.
He asked the Ugandan government, to
uphold the rights of all persons, under the
Ugandan constitution, and respects its obligations under international law and immediately release the detained persons.
His sentiments were echoed by the executive director of the Kenya Human Rights
Commission (KHRC) George Kegoro who
said the Kenyan and Uganda government
must respect the law and release the acquitted individuals. If the governments of

Page 2

Kenya and Uganda made the rare choice of

dealing with this case according to the rule
of law, they must stick to that method and
release the acquitted persons, he said.
Kegoro said the outcome of the trial sends
the message that due process rather than
high-handed tactics such as extrajudicial
killings can be effective ways of dealing
with terrorism cases. Governments do not
have to resort to the high-handed tactics,

including extrajudicial killings, which often

characterise their approaches to countering
terrorism, he said.
The point of principle is that all persons
who are suspected of crimes, including
those that may have committed crimes,
must have their day in court. This is the
principle that the Kenyan civil society
sought to uphold, he said.

FCB gets new boss

First Community Bank has named a new managing

director to propel the bank to greater heights in banking.
Fazal Mehboob Said, a career banker with more than
25 years experience in the banking industry will be
responsible to maximize the banks growth as well as
to develop innovative strategies to drive the Shariah
compliant bank to achieve its business goals.
He brings along with professional experience in retail,
corporate and Investment banking from South Africa
and Nigeria and other countries. Fazal has previously worked with Standard Bank and Absa Bank both
from South Africa and served as an Islamic banking
specialist with the International Financial Cooperation, a World Bank subsidiary which seconded him to
Kenya as a consultant for Gulf African Bank.
We want to take the bank to the Tier II category in
the medium term and also make it a more meaningful player to contribute to the prosperity and social
development of the country, he said about his expectations.
Fazal stressed that Islamic banking was in the mainstream and its ethical principles and asset based
system are important benchmarks for their strength.
He explained that in comparison to conventional
banking, Islamic banks were largely immune to the

financial crisis which affected the

global banking industry in 2008
due to their ethical business practices. While we are also regulated by the Central Bank of Kenya,
in terms of Sharia (Islamic law)
we have to be more transparent
in governance procedures and
management principles as Islamic
banking is about maintaining ethical practices, he told The Friday

Get ready to welcome a dear friend Month of Ramadhan

The following tips can be helpful in attaining our goals during the blessed month of
Ramadhan goal.
1. Intention and Determination Intention
creates the desire, the consciousness and
the determination; which in turn produces
the required efforts for a task or goal. At
the start of this Ramadhan, make the intention of attaining the piety (Taqwa) which
is the goal of the month of fasting. Have
the intention of reaching this level of piety through your fasting, worship (Ibadat)
and all the planned special activities during this month. To achieve, this goal, it may
be beneficial to dedicate some private time
before the first day or on the first day of
Ramadhan and make Hamd and Istighfar
to Allah. Send salutations on the Prophet
salallahu alayhi wa sallam and ask Allah to
assist you in this endeavor. Making Duaa
with focus and concentration can help you
attain the proper mindset.
2. Relationship with Quran Make special
arrangements during this month for recitation, listening, understanding and pondering on the verses of Quran. Spend as much
time as possible in the company of Quran.
Attending Taraweeh regularly is a great opportunity to complete listening to the Quran
at least once during Ramadhan. If you
dont understand the Arabic language, you
should make every effort to understand a
set portion with translation and tafseer.
If following the translation for an entire
Juz is not possible, dedicate time to follow some portion of a Juz. Alternatively,
you can plan to complete the reading with
translation within one year and before the
next Ramadhan. In our day and age, the
Internet has opened an unlimited number
of opportunities for learning and understanding of Quran from the comfort of our
homes.
3. Stay Away from Sin Make a special
effort to stay away from any and all types
of sins. In this month, believers are given
special protection from the devil (Shaytan), which we should take advantage of
by promoting and increasing our closeness
to Allah. The farther we are from sin, the
closer we get to Allah. The Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam reminded us in his famous Hadith that Fasting acts as a shield
from sins, The fasting person should not
curse anyone, yell and badmouth anyone.
If someone curses him or fights with him,
he should move away by saying, I am fasting. I cant be part of bad deeds (Bukhari
and Muslim), so use it as a shield. We can
gradually and consciously correct our bad
habits for example, we can decide to consciously lower our voice and avoid yelling,
screaming or fighting during this Ramadhan. Also we should avoid mentioning negative things about people in their absence.
Make a special effort to guard your tongue
during this month. Make a habit every night
to assess your day before going to sleep.
Make immediate Istighfar and repent if you
have committed a sin during your day.
4.Seek Good Deeds A believer should al-

ways be seeking opportunities to perform

and engage in good deeds. During the
month of Ramadhan the reward for every
good deed is multiplied manifold times.
We should seek all such opportunities in
worship (Ibaadat) and relationships (Muamalat). When a believer goes beyond the
obligatory acts (Faraidh) and hastens to
perform the optional (Nawafil) it shows his
eagerness to please Allah. These are the
believer about whom Allah relates in the
Hadith Qudsi related by Abu Hurayrah (radhiallahu anhu) that such people become
so dear to Allah that Allah becomes the
eyes through which they see; He becomes
the ears through which they hear; He becomes the feet through which they walk,
and the tongue through which they speak.
In this Ramadhan decide on any three or
more good deeds that you will consistently
perform to attain this special nearness to
Allah.
5. Qiyam al-layl To stand the night in
prayer and recite from the Book of Allah
is one of the most effective methods of attaining the consciousness of Allah (Taqwa).
Allah praises these believers in Surat AlDhariyat [51:18] And in the hours before
dawn they would ask forgiveness [51:18]
Taraweeh is considered to be part of Qiyam al-layl. Believers are also encouraged
to wake up and pray during the second
part or the third part of the night right before dawn. We can be among those who
are mentioned in the above verse of Quran
by simply waking up 15-20 minutes before
Suhoor and performing two rakaat Nafil
prayers. Abu Hurairah (radhiallahu anhu)
narrated that Allahs Messenger said: In
the last third of every night Allah descends
to the lowermost heaven and says; Who is
calling Me, so that I may answer him? Who
is asking Me so that may I grant him? Who
is seeking forgiveness from Me so that I
may forgive him?. [Bukhari, Hadith Qudsi].
This and many of the following verses are
a great inspiration for the believers to stand
in prayer during the night.
Dhikr and Duaa Remembrance of Allah is
important throughout our lives, but is even
more important during the month of Ramadhan. Making a special effort to keep the
remembrance of Allah, especially with your
tongue is a source of great reward. This act
keeps Allah in your thoughts constantly. A
constant dhikr of Allah and his praise (Tahmeed and Tahleel) are one of the best of
ways of reaping rewards during this month.
As we make Duaa to Allah, we perfect our
conviction and belief that He is the only
one who can fulfill our needs, wants and
desires. Extending our hands in complete
devotion any time of the day or night and at
specific times such as the time of breaking
of fast (Iftar) would be a source of Allahs
mercy and acceptance. Make a special effort to memorize some of the Adhkar and
frequently repeat them throughout the day.
6. Night Vigil on the Night of Power (Laylatul
Qadr) and Itikaf In this night Quran was
revealed. The status of this night was
clearly stated in the famous verses of Surat

Al-Qadar The Night of Decree (a.k.a. The

Night of Power) is better than a thousand
months [97:3]
In this night Allah forgives those who seek
forgiveness and stand the night in prayer.
This night is the most important and blessed night of the year. According to the Ahadith, this night is one of the odd nights of
the last ten (10) days of Ramadhan and believers are commanded to seek this night
and ask for forgiveness and the expiation
from the Hell fire in this night. This night
was given to the Ummah of Muhammad
salalallahu alayyhi wa sallam as a special
gift which allows them to gain mountains
of reward in a short amount of time. Make
special arrangements for yourself and your
family to earn the rewards of this special
night to its fullest. Spend all these nights
or parts of it in prayer, recitation of Quran
and adhkar.
7. Spend for the Pleasure of Allah (Charity)
Charity is considered the second most
important act of worship after prayers.
Spending with the pure intention of pleasing Allah from ones wealth is one of the
noblest acts liked by Allah. Allah promises
the recompense of seven hundred times of
what a believer spends for His sake.
Infaq has been described as a key characteristic of Muttaqeen (those who have
Taqwa and consciousness of Allah at all
times). In this month, open your heart and
your wallet. Give for the sake of Allah without any fear of poverty. Give to your relatives, the orphans and poor to the best of
your ability. Give without any desire of recompense or worldly reward as described
by Allah in Surat Al-Dahr We feed you only
for the countenance of Allah. We wish not
from you reward or gratitude. [76:9]
8. Helping and Supporting People The
Prophet salalhu alayhi wa sallam called the
month of Ramadhan as the month of consolation. During this month make a special
effort to help someone. Is there a family in
your neighborhood that you havent seen
in a while? A student in a strange new city?
A new Muslim who is fasting for the first
time? An elderly couple who cant get to
the Masjid? Why not take a few minutes to
make a phone call, drop in for a visit, or
invite someone for Iftar. Even the smallest

Some Ramadhan rulings for women

Sh. Muhammad al-Hassan al-Shanqiti

Indeed, women are distinguished with several specific rulings [in Islamic law]. That
is because theShariah rulings are built
on consideration of differences between
individuals, kindness and gentleness. Allah [The Exalted] says: He [Allah] did not
place upon you, in the religion [Islam], any
hardship.
There is a universal maxim, from the major
maxims of Shariah, which states Hardship brings ease. Thus, if something
causes difficulties for people, then Allah
[The Exalted] lifts the obligation of its observance and removes its hardship. For
that reason, the scholars mentioned the
precepts of hardship [meaning the applicability of this maxim] as: sickness, weakness, insufficiency, abundance, traveling,
indecisiveness and fear.
These precepts [if present] will lead to
hardship. Thus, if any one of them presents
themselves, the Shariah takes it into consideration by assigning it a ruling that relieves its burden.
Women are presented with a number of issues that meet the requirements of such
as pregnancy, nursing, menstruation and
irregular vaginal blood flow [menorrhagia].
If one of these four issues presents itself,
it influences the rulings related to purity,
prayer and fasting. We plan, Inshallah, to
spend some time discussing these issues
and the relevant rulings related to them
and fasting in light of these precepts.
Menstruation
If a woman menstruates before the commencement of Ramadhan [meaning she
enters into the month on her menses] then
she must not fast until she is absolutely
certain that she is pure. This purity is ascertained by two means: dryness in the
place of her menses, or a clear white liquid which comes at the end of her cycle. If
she becomes certain that her menses have
stopped during the night then she is obligated to fast the next day.
However, if she has doubts [regarding the
end of her cycle], then the consideration is
given to her established state, menstruation, and fasting is not an obligation upon
her until she is sure of its cessation. On
the other hand, if the opposite holds true,
she is pure and has doubts about her cycle starting, then such a doubt is not taken
into consideration because it is a doubt related to something which prevents [in this

Ayah of the week

case fasting]. Thus, consideration is given

to the established ruling that it is obligatory
for her to fast, since her purity is what is
certain.
If a woman menstruates during the day
time, and she is sure of her menses, then
the ruling that allows her to break her fast is
applied because menstruation breaks the
fast and prevents its observance. However,
it is an obligation for her to make up the
days she missed from fasting due to her
menses. Thus, the menstruating woman
is obliged to make up the days of fasting that she missed but not the prayers.
This is established by the sound narration
of Aisha who said, We were ordered to
make up the fast [of Ramadhan] but not the
prayers. This report makes it clear that it is
an obligation to make up the fasting days
in which a menstruating woman breaks her
fast and that it is not obligatory upon her to
make up the prayers she missed due to her
menses. The difference between the two
is that prayers are a common occurrence
[five times a day] where as fasting is not
[once a year for 29 or 30 days].
The nature of women is different when it
comes to the strength of their menses.
The Prophet [May the peace and blessing
of Allah be upon him] made clear that the
longest normal time period for a womans
menses is either six, or seven, days, and
that there are some women whose menses
will be less, and some whose menses will
be longer. If it is the first time a woman has
experienced menstruation, then her purity is established by either her becoming
dry, or the appearance of a white fluid that
comes at the end of her menses. And if the
woman has menstruated before, then she
is considered as one who has developed a
natural pattern regarding her cycle.
However, it must be noted that there is a
difference amongst the scholars regarding
how many times she should have menstruated before her cycle is considered a
means to measure her menses. Some of
the scholars hold that she should have
menstruated at least three times. Thus, if
she menstruates three times consecutively
within a three month span, then she will
know the strength of her menses because
of her experience.
However, if she menstruates once, or
twice, without reaching three consecutive
times, then according to those scholars

Hadith of the week

O you who have believed, avoid much negative

assumption.Indeed,some
assumption is sin.And do
not spy or backbite each
other.And fear Allah:Indeed
Allah is accepting of repentance and Merciful.

Narrated Abu Huraira

(R.A.A.): Allah's Apostle (S.A.W.)
said:
"Whoever
establishes
prayers during the nights of
Ramadan faithfully out of sincere
faith and hoping to attain Allah's
rewards (not for showing off), all
his past sins will be forgiven.

(Surah Al-hujurat :12)

(Bukhari)

Quote of the week

A wise man first
thinks and then speaks
and a fool speaks first
and then thinks
(Ali ibn Abi Talib)

the measurement of her cycle cannot be

known. It is said that it is sufficient for her
to menstruate only once. Meaning, if she
menstruates and discovers that the norm
of her cycle is seven days or six days and
that her purity comes in the morning or the
evening, then this measurement is taken
into consideration.
It is possible that a womans cycle could
start at anytime during the day. However,
it is not obligatory for her to check her
menses at night before sleeping. However, when she awakes in the morning if
she checks and finds that the area of her
menses is dry, then it is obligatory for her
to fast. And if she still sees some discharge
then she is considered on her cycle and
she will stay in that condition until she is
absolutely sure that her cycle has ceased.
However, if her habit is to end her menses with a white clear discharge, then she
should wait for it because it is the sign of
her purity and considered more accurate
then dryness.
With that in mind, it is possible that she
could rely upon dryness regarding fasting.
Thus, if she discovers that she is dry and
the white discharge that signifies the end
of her menses has not come before dawn,
then it is possible for her to fast and, after that, if she experiences the white discharge, it will not damage her fasting. And
if her menses stops during the night, and
she fasts and experiences discharge after
the evening prayer, then her fast, for that
day, was sound as it was considered a day
free of menses. However if she awakes
pure, begins her fast and then experiences
her menses again during the day, then she
must break her fast and make up that day.

Gulf African Bank to offer education support to bright students

Shariah compliant financial institution Gulf

African Bank through its social responsibility initiative programme will extend educational support to bright and needy students
to further their education.
The programme has seen over 1500
bright and needy students from poor backgrounds who scored high marks at Kenya
Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE)
and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) receive sponsorship and
bursaries for their education pursuit from
the bank.
Speaking last week at Diamond Jubilee
hall in Mombasa during the official launch
of the Gulf African Bank Foundation, the
banks Managing Director Abdalla Abdulkhalik noted that the move is aimed at
supporting bright and needy students in
the country to further their education and

career at both high schools and tertiary

institutions and contribute to the improvement of education standards for national
development.
He pointed out that education is the only
sector that can positively transform the society and that the Gulf African Bank Foundation, the corporate social responsibility
(CSR) arm of the bank will be channeling
part of their investments towards educational social initiatives. ''We recognized
education being a vital pillar in development of a community, Gulf African Bank as
part of its social welfare programme found
it prudent to involve itself in this endeavors
of ensuring the educational needs are catered for,'' said Abdulkhalik.
He further disclosed that Scholarships
worth Sh98 million were set to be disbursed

Kisumu residents benefit from SWAM free medical camp

Over 300 residents in Kisumu County benefited from a free medical camp held last
week on Sunday.
The one-day medical exercise was carried
out by a team of health officials from various hospitals within Kisumu County which
included Aga Khan hospital, Jaramogi Oginga General and Referral hospital and
Avenue hospital among others who offered
consultations and medical services to the
town residents.
The event was organized by the Kisumu
based Sisters With A Mission (SWAM)
Muslim development group.
Services offered during the event included
X-ray services, pediatric lab and pharmacy
and general medical checkups among other services.
Addressing participants at the Kisumu
Public Library nominated Member of County Assembly Farida Salim emphasized the
importance of health in development and
called local residents and Kenyans in general to take health as fundamental to development.
Farida further urged community, Imams
and religious leaders to play a significant
role in educating and sensitizing their congregations on health matters to facilitate a
healthy society for social economic development.
''It is prudent we fight and destroy illness
among our community so as to be healthy
enough to undertake our religious and spiritual obligations with ease and effectively
play our roles in development endeavours.
I therefore call upon my fellow politicians,
community, Imams and religious leaders
to be at fore front to educate and sensitize
residents to take care of their health and
well-being as health is fundamental to development of any community,'' said Farida.
She commended the Sisters With A Mission group for the initiative and called on
other organizations to emulate the same
for prosperity.
On her part Chairlady of the group, Sister
Rehema Akidah said the medical camp

gesture of kindness can make a huge difference in someones life. Remember your
actions are measured on their quality and
not their quantity. Breaking someones fast
even with modest food can make you worthy of great reward and can be an expiation
from the fire of Hell.
The Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam
said, If someone helps break the fast of a
fasting person in the month of Ramadhan,
he will receive the same amount of reward
as the person fasting without any reduction in the reward of the fasting person.
He also said, If someone feeds a fasting
person, Allah will quench his thirst from
the water of Kawthar and he will never be
thirsty again until he enters Jannah.
9. Invite Towards The Quran The struggles of this world will end, but the struggles of those who enter Hell will never end.
Therefore, the biggest service to anyone is
to save them from the fire of Hell and help
them enter Paradise (Jannah). The month
of Ramadhan was honored by Allah due to
the revelation of Quran during this month.
So, inviting people to the message of Quran
is among the noblest acts we can perform
during this month. In this month, we are all
focused on reaping rewards and cleansing
ourselves, but we should not ignore the
highest responsibility of calling people to
the Deen of Allah and to the message of

this Ramadhan and reap the benefits and

Lift night fishing ban in Lamu Shakila

Lamu county Women Representative

Shakila Abdalla has called on the government to lift a night fishing ban which is still
in force in some parts of the county.
She said the curfew has impacted negatively on the livelihoods of residents of Kiunga majority of whom depend on fishing
which is normally done at night.
The night fishing curfew was imposed by
the government in 2011 following a spate
of Al Shabaab attacks.
Although President Uhuru Kenyatta gave
an order to lift the ban during his visit to the
county early this year, the order is yet to be
implemented.
Shakila accused the navy of disrespecting the Presidential directive by failing to
honour his order to lift the ban adding that
the curfew was hurting the economy of the
county as well the tourism industry which
the region largely depends on.

The navy has neglected the order and now

Kiunga people who rely so much on fishing
are now languishing in poverty, the curfew
is contributing to poverty among locals who
depend on fishing and tourism as their major economic activity, she said.
Shakila said the five-year old curfew has
grossly affected the social lives of many
residents and their constitutional right to
move around freely violated by the curfew.
The Navy should work with fishermen in
solidarity and harmony instead of ill-treating the fishermen or ordinary people, she
added.
The legislator who was addressing residents at Kiunga primary school at the weekend said she will reach out to interior cabinet secretary Joseph Nkaissery together
with other coastal leaders to see to it that
the ban is lifted and fishermen are guaranteed security while carrying out their fishing
activities at night.

First Somali TV in Kenya launched

The first television channel to broadcast in

Somali language in the country has been
launched.
Star Television Network (STN) was
launched last Saturday at a Nairobi hotel.
The TV station was launched by Star media network which owns popular Somali radio station Star FM.
Speaking at the launch as the chief guest,
majority leader in the parliament Aden Duale said the television will provide a good
platform for the Muslim community in the
country to demystify a lot of misconceptions about Muslims and Islam that is usually held by non-Muslims.
He noted the launch presents Muslim religious leaders and scholars the much needed opportunity to defend Islam against
propaganda in the media and portray the
true picture of Islam.
We have always needed our own television channel that provides platform where
our children can be taught moral values
and the true teachings of Islam, where our

daughters can be educated on the significance of donning the hijab, said the Garissa Township Member of Parliament
The television will also broadcast in Borana
and Kiswahili languages and is available on
Gotv, Bamba, Signet and Pang platforms.
Mandera senator Billow Kerrow commended Star media network on the launch of the
new TV channel saying residents of North
Eastern region have been granted an alternative source of news and information in
Somali language.
Now the people in North Eastern counties
can follow events and news in the country
through the Somali television channel, he
said.
The launch was attended by Somali business community, religious leaders and politicians from North Eastern. Somalias ambassador to Kenya Gamal Mohammad was
also among the notable attendees.
This launch comes a time when the networks Star FM is celebrating 11 years of
radio broadcasting in Kenya and Somalia.

Shun crime, Mombasa senator tells youth

Mombasa senator Hassan Omar has

warned youth in the county against indulging in criminal activities.
Speaking over weekend during the finals of
the Mombasa Secondary Schools Debate
Competition on human rights, peace and
security, Omar told the youth not to ruin
their lives by engaging in criminal activities
that will put them at odds with the rule of
law.
Omar urged the high school students to resist attempts of being recruited into extremist groups pointing out that the new face
of extremism was now targeting young
people in educational institutions. Imagine
yourself serving the rest of your life in jail.
Crime of whatever nature does not pay, he
said on Saturday during the event held at
Allidina Vishram School.
The senator instead advised the students
to concentrate on performing well in their

studies and at the same time engage in productive activities that will better their lives
and that of the society.
While urging Haki Africa which organized
the debate competition for the schools and
other stakeholders to put in place such forums, senator Omar said radicalization and
extremist among the young population can
be countered through engagement programmes where youth are given the opportunity to air their grievances.
Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir was
among the notable guest in the event that
brought together hundreds of students from
various schools in Mombasa county to deliberate on security matters affecting the
community.
The competition was won by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan secondary school
while Abu Huraira and Maweni Girls took
second and third positions respectively.

She called for more understanding and

cooperation between the navy and the
fishermen and urged the latter to carry
with them identity cards and reflector
jackets for easy identification.

Lets help our disabled

Social welfare is an instinctively noble human characteristic

that is intrinsically valuable to our society and to all of humanity.
It defines who we are as a people; compassionate, caring, unselfish and willing to reach out to others in their times of need.
Always with the perceptive gratitude of the concept of: "For the
sake of Allah let me be there ".
The government at present has left the disadvantaged alone.
They are, after all, serving a purpose; exploited by politics, ignored by humanity, saving the government precious corporate
dollars, and simply ignored by all others, with the exception of a
very few humanitarians that do what they can to alleviate their
plight.
Ummah Foundation is one such a humanitarian organisation
that believes disability of any kind should not be neglected. We
believe that with assistance to the disabled, we can go a long
way in empowering them to be productive members of the community. Since the inception of Ummah Foundation hundreds of

the physically challenged people have benefitted from wheel-chairs,

crutches, blind canes, artificial limbs, sunscreens, tricycles and foodstuffs donated by the Foundation to institutions where the deaf are
catered for.
Each month Ummah Foundation donates an average of seven
wheel-chairs to the physically challenged members of our community. For the past two weeks, Ummah Foundation has donated three
wheel chairs two to brothers Abdi and Hamza both from Ijara district
in Garissa county. Though they both live far apart in the far villages
of Masalani, they share a common phenomenon of not being able to
walk. One was affected severely after having had a bout of polio in
his childhood. After he recovered he was not able to walk again up to
date. He has a family and he should be useful to them after he got the
wheelchair. The other brother got paralysis of his leg after he was bitten by a venomous snake and due to poor access to proper medical
care, he lost one of his legs. With the wheelchair, the brother is now
able to conduct some small business to sustain his family. They are
both very grateful to Ummah Foundation for the role they play in caring for
the disabled across the country.
Another case is of a brother Abubakr,
he had a very tragic accident that rendered him disabled after failing to get
proper medical attention in the initial
stages. The only thing he remembers
is finding himself in a hospital, intensive care unit ward with one his lower
limps completely amputated.
Brother Abubakr recollects the sad
moments with a lot of sorrows but as
he says time has healed his wounded soul. He has finally accepted his
condition and tried to live with it as
he says that is what Allah destined
for him. He is left with three children
after his wife could not put up with the
situation of living with a disabled man
and therefore decided to annul the
matrimony.
The only helper is his old mother who
has endured all the troubles that the
Brother goes through every day. She
is the sole bread winner of the family. Now with the wheel chair brother
Abou- as commonly known- has
promised to start a shoe mending
business within his local town. He had
started to do it from home but there
were limitations of him accessing the
customers. He plans to begin a stall
that will help him access the bigger
crowd in the town who will need his
services. With his healthy hands he
will be able to ride himself up to his
stall and back home.
His big prayer is for the trustees and
founders of Ummah Foundation who
he says came to his rescue after
learning of his terrible condition. He
prays that Allah will bless the donors
and helpers of this noble mission.
Thanks to Ummah Foundation he
has a wheelchair that has made his
life more flexible.
