HavingjoinedtheBasieBandin1937,EdisonspentthirteenyearswithBasieuntilthebandwas
temporarilydisbandedin1950.Edisonthereafterpursuedavariedcareerasleaderofhisowngroups,
travelingwithJazzatthePhilharmonicandfreelancingwithotherorchestras.Intheearly1950s,hesettled
ontheWestCoastandbecameahighlysoughtafterstudiomusician,makingimportantcontributionsto
recordingsbysuchartistsasBillieHoliday,FrankSinatra,andEllaFitzgerald.In1956herecordedthefirst
ofthreealbumswithtenorgreatBenWebster.
AccordingtotheEncyclopediaofJazzintheSeventies,Edisoninthe1960sand1970scontinuedtoworkin
manyorchestrasontelevisionshows,includingHollywoodPalaceandTheLeslieUggamsShow,specials
withFrankSinatraprominentlyfeaturedonthesoundtrackandinthesoundtrackalbumofthefilm,Lady
SingstheBlues.From1973EdisonactedasMusicalDirectorforReddFoxxontheatredates,atconcerts,
andinLasVegas.HeappearedfrequentlyinEuropeandJapanuntilshortlybeforehisdeath.AstheLos
AngelesJazzInstitute's(LAJI)firstTributeHonoree,"Sweets"willalwayshaveaspecialplaceinthe
heartsofjazzfans.[3]
