The University of Kansas - Visual Art Department Presents:

Artist Talk, Taey Iohe

Unwriting Narrative Space
Lure of the Lawn (2009), Taey Iohe
Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Arts

Lecture: Monday April 5 at Noon

Art & Design Building: Room 421
Taey Iohe is artist and researcher living in London, working internationally. The focus of her work
has been on writing on nomadic subjects and making an artist intervention on transcultural
relationships in geopolitics.

Her main interest is in how the nature of a visual language establishes a context within aesthetics,
and cultural-political discourse for the development of a diasporic identity and a subjectivity as a
virtual nomad. She uses narrative visual elements within multimedia based installations. Her subject
matter is informed by questions surrounding the status of art writing and the nature of linguistic
transitions in a nomadic and mobile geopolitical frame. In her art space, she examines the position of
subalternity within the mainstream media as an ‘elsewhere’ construction; a fluid and a-bordered
status and method of overcoming political boundaries, addressing questions of subjectivity, and
sexual and national-ethnic self-definition and identity.

Her recent work, Strangers in the Neighbourhood and Lure of Lawn are parts of a conceptual
community arts project, which imagines Hackney in North London as a narrative space. The
narrative hypothesis created an imaginary space for Na Hyeseok, an early 20th century (the colonial
period in Korea) Korean landscape artist to encounter Mary Wollstonecraft. She constituted an
exchange of letters, psychogeographical walks, and workshops with neighbours to generate
discourses around space and identity. As an output of visualization, she travelled local streets with a
bed and documented this ‘drift’ as photographic series.
Taey started as a award winning digital storyteller (Best Contents in International Digital Arts
Festival, 2000, Korea), as a hypertext writer, and developed her skills in the MA Interactive
Multimedia programme (University of Arts London) after she graduated BA in English Literature and
creative writing. She has been invited to show her work at a number of exhibitions and screenings
internationally. She has been nominated for best creative player in the Blackberry Women &
Technology Awards (2008, UK) and won at the Europrix Multimedia Awards (2008, Austria). She is
a PhD candidate at the University of East London, UK. Currently she also leads the multimedia and
design department in SMARTlab digital media institute in London, UK. (http://

Taey Iohe will be in residence in the Expanded Media area from April 5- 7, 2010.
She will give a lecture and workshop in the Community-Based Art class and work with
graduate students in the Visual Art Department.
