10 Required Hours/Trimester

In order to receive AVID credit for volunteering each trimester, the following criteria apply:

You may accumulate up to 3 hours of school-based volunteering at Del Norte High School for credit (helping
DNHS teachers, coaches, departments, helping at a school event, etc.).

At least 12 hours MUST be for the communitys benefit (separate from the high schools benefit). For example:
Working with the elderly, volunteering at a non-profit day care center, working at emergency food or housing
programs, performing hospital work, joining environmental clean-up and restoration projects, volunteering to help
with political campaigns, etc. In sum, a wide variety of service may be performed. Find what interests you,
sounds fun and meaningful, and ask for ideas! Check out: http://www.californiavolunteers.org

Volunteer hours can be (and are highly recommended to be) accumulated through participation in one of DNHSs
SERVICE CLUBS, so long as they also fall within these AVID parameters. See your Student Planner and the
DNHS website (under the tab titled Students / ASB / List of Clubs) for excellent opportunities)

11-12th grade: Try to explore career-related volunteer opportunities as much as possible. Ask your teacher for
some advice based on your areas of interest.

What does NOT qualify for volunteer credit for AVID?

Some opportunities do not benefit the greater community, such as doing yard work for your grandparents, doing work to
benefit for-profit organizations (ex: working at your uncles restaurant or at a parents office), babysitting younger
siblings, and service that does not go above and beyond what you are already required to do for school, family, etc.
Why Volunteer?
Service work benefits both the community and the individual. Involvement in the form of hands on, direct service
provides an opportunity for students to serve society and make an immediate impact.
Heres a short list to begin thinking about the benefits of service:

Encourages personal development (maturity, self-assurance, enthusiasm, responsibility, and leadership skills
qualities that colleges, scholarships and employers LOVE to recognize and reward)!
Offers an exciting experience and success in new areas
Provides an opportunity to gain new skills and discover hidden talents

Helps to define career plans and gain job experience

Gives exposure to and appreciation of diversity

Expands understanding of social issues and the chance to participate in solutions

Builds relations outside of school and offers new perspectives

Enhances classroom learning through application of academics

Allows you to meet interesting people with similar interests

Many companies encourage their employees to participate in volunteer programs. Cisco, for example has numerous
programs for their employees in which to get involved. Ciscos philanthropy programs are anchored in the belief that
building strong and productive global communities communities in which every individual has the means to live, the
opportunity to learn, and the chance to give back. Any one of these essentials is enough to make a difference in the
present, but it takes all three to set in motion an enduring cycle of health and prosperity.
