Urbanization is an issue that is discussed and tried to find solutions at the present time.
Urbanization is the movement of people from rural to urban areas, and the result is the growth
of cities. Many villagers and small town dwellers want to live in big cities. With some
expectations, they make a movement from villages to big cities. In the article Urbanization:
Its Causes, Effects and Benefits it is stated that more and more people coming to cities, more
and more opportunities are formed in the cities such as universities (2010). Urbanization
affects society, environment and economy.
One of the significant effects of urbanization is on society. Cities have great opportunities
compared to rural areas and this result in great differences in lifestyles. People living in cities
have a variety of social and cultural activities such as theatre, movie, concerts, fitness-centers,
and so on. People move into cities to benefit from these diverse opportunities. Most of these
opportunities increase the risk for chronic diseases. As Tellnes stated in one of his articles,
Chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and obesity are affected by the
unhealthy lifestyles which can be exampled as changed food habits, alcohol and cigarette
consumption, and decrease in exercising(2005). Another effect of urbanization is about
social unrest and violence. Rapid and unplanned urbanization causes all types of people from
varied rural areas to move into cities. Various types of people living in cities results in lack of
social harmony. Rapid increase in population makes it hard for the governments to manage
the city, enforce the laws, and maintain the security. As in the book Challenges of
Urbanization stated that the rapid increase in urbanization affects the ongoing street crimes,
because it is difficult for the governments to sustain the safe life in crowded cities beyond
limits(pp.72-73, n.d.)
