Understanding the genetics of these swiftlets is important to swiftlets farmers. It

may become possible to identify and propagate genotypes that show advantageous
characters. For instance, those that are particularly productive, or produce nests of
exceptional size or quality, or display strong fidelity to their home site. On top of
that, disease inevitably threatening any birds kept in large numbers in close quarters, lineages offering genetic resistance may be identifiable. With enhanced understanding of the genome, it may even prove feasible to engineer deliberate crosses
and thereby introduce other desirable characters.

he edible-nest swiftlet
of the genus Aerodramus is one of the
most
ecologically
unique and complex colonial nesting birds. It navigates in total
darkness aided by echolocation
and using its own saliva to construct nest. Economically it is a
valuable natural resource, much
sought-after for its edible nests. White-nest swiftlet farming began in 19th
century. The earliest farming activities was recorded in Java, Indonesia.
In West Java in 1960, there were already many dwellings in which colonizing swiftlets had been encouraged by a variety of modifications to
thrive and increase in population.

University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF) is a boutique university
that focusses on a few areas deemed able to raise its reputation to international prominence in a short time. It will be branded as a "Green
University" where programmes offered are aimed at achieving sustainability. The unprecedented advancement of ICT will continue to make
new changes in the way mankind function individually and socially. The
biological revolution is next and set to follow suit. This however will be
hugely dependent on how we leverage on the wealth and diversity of
our own biological resources. Sabah's edge is in its biodiversity. UCSF
seeks to ride on the crests of advancing waves of this new biological
revolution.
