Learning PCC
The PCC package is an easy to use calculation program. The Graphical User Interface is
designed to be selfexplanatory. For novices these pages provide guidance about the use of
the software and some background information about the calculations performed.
The section 'Getting Started' gives for experienced engineers the minimal necessary
information to use PCC. The pages thereafter give step by step information on creating a
project, building a pipe class, perform calculations and export various reports.
The last sections of this document are dealing with the software and database structure. This
information can be helpful for designing interfaces with other database applications. The
structure and objects in the software allow for further development. As an example, an
interface with an electronic Line Designation Table is possible.
The very last section of this documents gives the contact possibilities in case of questions,
advice or problems.

In this section you will design a new pipe class in a new project. You have probably already
started the program and are looking at the main window, If not start the program and select
cancel at when the projects need to be selected.
We will create a new project with a new pipe class:
1. In PCC main window menu choose File > New Project. The window PCC project data
will open
2. In the PCC project data window replace <New> with a project number, for example 'P1600-01'
3. enter the project description, names and location'
4. select the design code of your choice
5. Click once the Save button
6. Click the Close button
The numbers at the calculation check will be used to facilitate the checking of the
calculations. The color marks will appear in the Summary Sheet to identify the design
margins or problem area's in the pipe class.
1. After clicking the Close button in the PCC project data window the PCC projects
window has opened, showing the projects in the database. If not highlighted click click
the project P-1600-01 once with the mouse pointer and click the button 'Open'
2. The main PCC window is now shown. In the menu at the top of the window select with
the mouse Pipe class > New Class

The piping engineer can commence with building the pipe classes when the process (and
utility) design is completed. The process design will include the tentative line sizing and the
material choice for the pipe systems. The piping engineer will consider the corrosion
allowances and tolerance necessary for the overall plant lifecycle.
The PCC program allows the piping engineer to select the pipe components based on the
information stated above. Easy edit windows makes updates of the pipe specification efficient.
Copy and paste facilities provide additonal flexibility when preparing new pipe classes. All the
pipe classes are organized in projects, each project can be considered as a complete pipe
specification for the respective plant or unit.
top of page
To edit or open an existing project select 'Edit project from the 'File' menu or select the edit
project button from the button toolbar. The project to be opened or edited can be selected from
the listIn the project selection window the 'New', 'Edit' or 'Delete' options are available to
manipulate the projects.
The settings for a project will be used for all pipe classes in the project. For example if the
calculation code ASME B31.3 is selected as the calculation code, this code will be used for all
the pipe classes in the project.
The color settings are very usefull to see very quickly any errors in the calculations in the
summary sheet for the pipes and fittings, but also to determine whether components are to
strong. For example if the blue color is set for 20% and many components when calculated are
not even indicated by the blue color, the engineer will know that many components will be
stronger than probably is required.
top of page
The pipe class data window contains the general settings for the pipe class and default
instructions for PCC. The general data is:
Pipe class name
The material class
Global corrosion allowance
Global tolerance
Name of the engineer responsible for the pipe class
Revision
Other tabs at the top allow the user to enter the calculations settings per component type,
such as:
Pipe joint efficiency
Reducer cone length
Tee crotch factor
At the tab PT ratings the Pressure Temperature (PT) combinations can be selected. The
engineer can use the PT combinations as are listed in the standard or edit each PT
combination by hand as per the process requirements.
The tab 'Standards ..' allows the user to select default dimension standards, materials and
schedules. These default settings are used by the program when the user will select new
components. The default settings prevents that the users has to enter the dimension standard,
material standard and schedule for each individual component.
top of page
Note that removing a line sizes will delete the corresponding components from the database.
The user is not able to undo this operation.
The selected line sizes are automatically saved in the database. The available sizes indicate
the sizes which are available in the database for the pipe components.
Custom pipe sizes can be added. The custom pipe size can only be used for individual pipe
calculations. The database will most probably not have associated fittings ot execute for
example branch connections.
The arrow buttons are used to select or deselect pipe sizes.
top of page
Select one or more sizes in the left window fow which the data will be the same. This prevents
the user to enter the same data for each component multiple times.
At the right, the edit fields can be completed with the require data. For some line sizes the data
can not be entered. This will mean that the component for that size is not available in the
database and/or not in the relevant code.
Click 'Save' to save the entered data.
top of page
The applicable branch sizes can be selected by click the appropriate cell or the drag a square
of cells to enter similar data. The clipboard field at the top shows the selected branch type if
the copy and paste option is used for entering data in a cell.
The branch table is used to determine the required stubon calculations only. The user will have
to check whether the components are available to make the selected branches. There is no
automatic check between for example the component tee and the branch type tee. This
provides the best flexibility to the user and allows checking of different branch types without
losing data
top of page
Summary sheet
The PCC program can be used to build complete pipe specifications per project for process
plants. The main window shows for this purpose an overview of the pipe classes in the project
and the summary of the selected pipe class. The user can select the pipe class in the pipe
class listing frame which will refresh the summary window with the relevant data.
Below one of the three summary windows is shown. The windows are:
1. Pipe and fittings, these are the calculated components
2. Valve, gasket and fastner, the rating of these components are only checked against the
user selected PT combinations for the pipe class
3. Notes, the notes are text fields which will contain the additional mandatory requirements
in the pipe class to complete the pipe specification.
The purpose of the summary is to quickly review the contents of each selected pipe class. The
summary gives per pipe component group in condensed form the selected components and
branches.
The sheets can be send directly to the printer or can be exported to an MSExcel file. Now
users can provide quickly the basic information of the pipe class to other engineers or can
export infomation for further data processing.
Another important purpose of the summary sheet is to review the result of all calculations. The
user has, as part of the project settings, entered the limits for allowable stress. Based on these
limits PCC will generate color codes to indicate problem areas per component group. With the
push of one button the influence of the selected or updated pressure temperature combination
can be reviewed.
top of page
The limits can be set in such a way that also so-called overdesign can be determined. For
example: the red color can be used to indicate failure which is above 100%, the yellow color
can be set to indicate the required safety margin and the blue color can be used to set the
under limit for design. In this case, if no color appears after calculation of the components the
user can conclude that the relevant components are to strong compared with the design
conditions. The ideal situation is that only the blue color will appear and no red, yellow or nocolor.
Each component column heading shows at the right hand side the number of components in
that particular component group. This additional information is available to check the number
of components compared with the number of selected pipe classes of the components listed in
the branch table. It is only ment for a quick check, the final check can be done by reviewing
the component listing report.
The branch table can be used to check the selected line sizes. The branch and the header
sizes will always show the list of selected sizes. Comparing the number of sizes and for
example the number of selected pipes gives information whether for all sizes a pipe
component has been selected.
The branch table is used by the program only to determine the stubons to be calculated. The
other components such as Tees and Weldolets have no relation with the selected components
in the component tables. The reason for this is that the user is given the freedom to change
and add components for quick calculation check purposes.
top of page
Calculation
The calculations are performed by the PCC program instanteneously as per selection by the
user. The summary sheet is calculated by pressing <F5> or selecting the 'Summary
calculation' button from the button toolbar or selecting the 'Summary calculation' from the
'Execute' menu. Based on the pipe class data all calculations are executed and the color
codes are generated in the summary sheet.
The detail calculations can be reviewed by selecting <F7>. Each component (such as pipe,
tee, reducer) will be calculated seperately as the components and pressure temperature
combinations are selected by the user. The presentation of the detail calculations are similar
to the relevant code and can be efficiently checked with the code requirements. The
calculation sheets show the relevant input data, the formulae and the calculated values. The
completeness of the formulae and calculations allow the user to check the output by hand.
The detail calculations can be executed also by selecting the 'Calculate Component' from the
'Execute' menu or the relevant button from the button toolbar.
The user can also select from the 'Execute' menu 'List all calculations' or <F6> to generate
the listing of calculations main output. This listing gives an overview of all the main output
parameters of the detail calculations. The prime use for this report is to generate a
condensed output file for third party approval. This report gives also a good listing of the
material properties per pressure temperature combination.
The implemented calculation codes are:
ASME B31.3 (USA)
EN13480 (EU)
RToD (NL)
The ASME is a worldwide used code but has limitations for the calculations of branches and
fittings. The EN is code which will be used throughout Europe. The RToD code is used in the
Benelux and is implemented because of the excellent definition of fittings such as Tees and
Weldolets.

The PCC program calculates the critical PT combination based on the selected design
pressure/temperatures and the material properties.
top of page
top of page
At the left in the middle the critical PT combination is indicated for reference. For more
information about the critical PT combination refer to the relevant subject.
The middle and larger part of the window shows a spreadsheet like frame which gives all the
information of the calculation. This frame can be printed directly to a printer or exported to
MSExcel format file for further editing.
At the bottom a frame is visible which will show warnings if any. The warnings consist of
calculation errors due to input errors or warnings based on the calculation, such as insufficient
wallthickness or dimension out of range for according code.
The detail calculation sheets are very usefull when the summary sheet calculation has shown
problem areas by means of the color codes. The detail calculations enable the engineer to
trace and solve the problem area.
The design margin is a PCC specific feature which combines the influence of the PT
combination, the corresponding material properties and the dimensions of the component. The
design margin helps the engineer to quickly assess the influence of the combination of the
chosen design variables.
top of page
The list of all calculations gives the main detail calculation results in a table format for each
individual component in the pipe class. An additional sheet in the list gives an overview of the
material properties compared with the chosen PT combinations. The '<<<' marks indicate the
critical PT combination in the list per material in the pipe class. The detail calculations that
produced an error or indicated in the last column per each component.
The PCC software allows also to check the standard component database input for the
calculations. This option can be helpfull if users have entered user-defined items to the
component database that might contain errors. The standard database input (or the detail
component data) will be shown:
Select from the 'Execute' menu the option 'View component data'
Press key <F9>
Select button 'View component detail data' from the button toolbar
The list of all components and the list component detail data can be send directly to a printer
or can be exported to a MSExcel format file.
top of page
Report
The PCC program has extensive report facilities. The facilities include printing of standard
reports, exporting of spreadsheet files and exporting of XML files.
The user can send from most windows the output directly to the printer. Printing is typicaly
done from the pipe class summary sheets and from the calculation windows.
For further editing, it is possible to export the files in spreadsheet format from the same
windows. The format of the files is MSExcel. In MSExcel the sheets can be further edited with
for example a logo of the company. Please note that the changes in these spreadsheets
cannot be imported in to PCC. Further export is possible from the component detail data and
the material data used.
The export to XML files is used to import and export the data from the pipe classdatabase. The
XML file can be exported by User_1 and send via e-mail to User_2. User_2 can import the
XML file and has an exact copy of the project, pipe class and settings as User_2. This feature
is practical if only a part of the database is being edited at a remote location. The data can be
edited and when completed can be imported in the central database.
The user has maximum flexibility in extracting data from the software. There is a possibility for
experienced software users to access the database and create custom reports. Contact the
developers for these possibilities.
The standard reports that can be exported are:
Summary sheets, pipe/fitting, valve/gasket/fastener and notes
Detail component data listing
Calculation result listing
Detail component calculation
The detail component calculations include:
Pipe
Elbow
Reducer
Tee
Weldolet
Stubon
Cap
The ratings are checked for the rated fittings and valves during the overall and detail
calculation execution. Calculation warnings and errors are shown on screen
The calculations are performed and printed according:
ASME B 31.3 (USA)
EN13480 (EU)
RToD (NL)

top of page
Export
The PCC program provides two extensive export facilities.
One export possibility includes almost all information that is presented on screen. The export
format in spreadsheet format can be used with normal MSOffice tools such as MSExcel for
further editing. The export information include the input information such as the summary and
the component detail data listing, and calculation results.
The second export possibility is for the transfer of data. The format is XML as defined by the
W3C. The data is used to transfer setting and component selection information between
computer systems. PCC can use this data format to transfer data from for example a local
machine to a central database.
Data can be retrieved from the PCC system to prepare almost any report format.

Calculation check, this is a PCC specific feature. The use of the colors is defined by
setting the percentage of strength used of a component. The design pressure (DP) is
set by the user and the Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP) is calculated by
the program. The percentage strength used for a component is defined as the DP
divided by the MAWP. The summary sheet can be reviewed quickly by setting the colors
for different percentages. The color marks are set by the program in the summary sheet
per component row to indicate the percentage strength used. This allows a quick review
of the validity of pipe class for the selected pressure and temperature combinations.
