3.1. Trend in Marine Fisheries
3.1.1. Marine fish production
The year 2012-13 has witnessed increase in total marine fish production by 43.66 %
in quantity, while value has increased by 123.58 % compared to 2009-10. Since 1997-98,
marine fish production has increased during 2010-11, and has continued to increase up to
2012-13. Value of the fish catch has also shown the similar trend.

3.1.2. Species Composition

During the year 2012-13, Mackerel contributed about 29.16 % of the total marine fish
landings, followed by Stomatopod oratosquilla (12.34 %), Oil sardine (7.91 %), Squids (7.46
%), Misc.(6.13%), Soles (3.74%), Cuttlefish (3.49 %) and Rays (3.11%). In terms of value,
mackerels contributed about 20.29 % of the total value of fish harvested, followed by
Stomatopod oratosquilla13.93%, Oil sardine 3.00%, Squids 2.12%, Misc.3.80%, Soles
9.27%, Cuttlefish 9.89% and Rays 4.46%.

3.1.3. Seasonal Variation

Month wise marine fish catch showed considerable variations. Maximum landing
(28.87%) was recorded during 4th quarter (Jan-13 to Mar -13) followed by 2 nd quarter (Jul-12
to Sep-12) (24.61 %), and 3rd quarter (Oct-12 to Dec-12) quarter (23.98%) and 1 st quarter
(Apr-12 to Jun-12) (22.53 %.)

3.1.4. Regional Variation

During 2011-12 and 2012-13, Dakshina Kannada district accounted for 39.57%
&38.66 of the total marine fish production, followed by Udupi district, 34.59% and 35.02%
whereas Uttara Kannada district followed by 25.84% and 26.32%

3.1.5. Craft-wise Fish Catch

During the year 2012-13, 96 % of the total fish landings were by mechanized boats,
while non-mechanized boats contributed only 4 %. Among the mechanized boats, 54% of
total fish catch was harvested by trawlers, 22 % by other mechanized boats and 20 % by
purse seiners.
3.1.6. Utilization
During 2012-13, 48 % of the catch was marketed fresh, followed by curing (19 %),
fish manure (5%), freezing (10%) and canning (8%) and fish meal production (8%). Misc
(1%)and unspecified (1%) About 1.64 lakh metric tons of marine was used for fresh
consumption in the state.
