INTRODUCTION

Social networks allow users to share ideas, activities, events, and interests;
whatever you want to do. Most social network services are web based and
provide means for users to interact over the Internet, such as email and instant
messaging.
People today use social media to do a lot of things, but usually use social
networks to communicate with the word. Due its growing popularity among
children and adolescents, some social networking sites have become a popular
place for online predators. Parents should always be active with their children
and aware of what they are doing while online.
Social networks facilitate communication between people anywhere in the
world. But beyond all this fascination it is a great concern, the influence of these
social networks can result in user behavior. Today we can find someone through
'Facebook' or 'Twitter', from teenagers to public figures.
The problem of social networks and people is that we all come to them by
"curiosity" or to be in some way contacted with family or friends who are far
away, but most of people end up becoming addicted. Social networks can be
dangerous if you do not know how to control it because everything is too
addictive and often social networks can destroy our lives
Social networks are also being used by large corporations, organizations and
businesses to promote their products and services is a great form of
communication for corporations and companies, as they are closer to their
customers.

SOCIAL NETWORKING
1. DEFINITION:

Alternatively referred to as a virtual community or site profile, a social


network is a website that brings people together to talk, share thoughts
and interests, make new friends and necessitates the use of a software.
Basically social networks are of two types, those whose purpose is to
staff promote contacts, closer ties, either for leisure or other interests of
the persona.
A social network is a social structure in which there are people who are
linked. These relationships may be different types or of different
purposes.
Today if something striking are the appearance of these networks. The
three most popular networks: Facebook, Twitter and Youtube.
The priority objective of social networking is interrelating people,
therefore, as a starting point, the contact details of users are accessible
to everyone in order to facilitate the location of friends. The problem
arises when the user, which is recorded in a social network is not aware
of clear and simple treatment that can be performed on your data.
2. IMPORTANCE:
Social networks can provide a range of benefits to members of an
organization:

Support for learning: Social networks can enhance informal


learning and support social connections within groups of learners

and with those involved in the support of learning.


Support for members of an organization: Social networks can
potentially be used my all members of an organization, and not
just those involved in working with students. Social networks can

help the development of communities of practice.


Engaging with others: Passive use of social networks can
provide

valuable

business

intelligence

and

feedback

on

institutional services (although this may give rise to ethical

concerns).
Ease of access to information and applications: The ease of
use of many social networking services can provide benefits to

users by simplifying access to other tools and applications. The


Facebook Platform provides an example of how a social
networking service can be used as an environment for other tools.
3. CHARACTERISTICS OF SOCIAL NETWORKS:

They are based on the user: Social networks are built and run by

the users themselves.


They are interactive: Social networks also have a set of chat
rooms and forums, a series of network-based gaming as a way to

connect and have fun with friends applications.


Establish relationships: Social networks not only allow discover
new friends based on interests, but also allow reconnect with old

friends with whom contact has been lost for many years.
Exchange of information and interests: Social networks allow
content by a user is distributed through a network of contacts and

sub-contacts much bigger than you can imagine.


Offers a variety of services: Exchange of

information,

photographs, telephone services, games, chat, forums.


4. EXAMPLES OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SERVICES:
Examples of popular social networking services include:

FACEBOOK:
Is a social networking web site that allows people to
communicate with their friends and exchange information.
In May 2007 Facebook launched the Facebook Platform
which provides a framework for developers to create
applications that interact with core Facebook features.

Advantages:

Facebook is free and not only that, but it's also one of the
best mediums for communication. You can send messages,
start a video call, and upload photos and videos without
charge.

Facebook lets you connect to different people from


anywhere in the world. People everywhere these days are
familiar with Facebook. This gives you the opportunity to
learn more about the culture, values, customs, and
traditions of other countriesa modern-day pen-pal service
without the hassle. It also helps keep long distance
relationships alive. Sometimes these across-the-world
relationships get serious and even end up in marriagea

testament to the power of this social media platform.


Provides the opportunity to easily communicate with your
old friends and keep up-to-date one what they're doing. It's

fun to see their photos from around the world.


It's an easy way to share feelings and what's happening in
your daily life. You can share your achievements to get
some appreciation, or you can share your sorrows to get

support from your generous friends.


The site has good privacy settings, allowing you to choose

your desired level of privacy.


Facebook fan pages, groups, events, etc. are getting more
popular by the day. Fan pages and groups are very handy
for promotional activities. This is why almost every wellknown brand has a Facebook fan page and is investing lot

of money to get exposure to their core constituents.


Facebook groups can also be a great way to connect all of
your close friends. You can create a group and keep it
private in the group's settings. Features like group chat,
notifications, file sharing, etc. can help you communicate

and stay up-to-date easily.


The newsfeed plays a very important role in getting the
latest information. Facebook fan pages and users are

constantly sharing articles, photos, and videos.


Many popular celebrities and organizations are using
Facebook to give regular updates to their fans, allowing you
to feel closer to them than ever.

Students can use Facebook for group study by creating a


group only for studying. There, you can share information

about your projects, homework, assignments, exams, etc.


Relationships can blossom on Facebook. For long distance
couples, the easy communication can help keep the love
alive all the time they're apart. The site can even help

people eventually tie the knot.


Facebook online games are popular and addicting. There

are millions of users who regularly engage in these games.


Besides the games, there are thousands of applications,

quizzes, etc. available.


You can also use the site to create your own social media
platform. Share your article, blogs, photos, etc. to

thousands of people
Your login ID means that you don't need to waste your time
for registering other sites. Most sites and apps now allow
you to instantly register by logging in with your Facebook

account.
Facebook is well-designed! There are no distracting colors
or designs available. Facebook's simple design and
efficient performance made it the world's dominant social
site.

Disadvantages:
Facebook is addicting! For some people, Facebook can be
as habit-forming as cigarettes! Facebook is a useful and
helpful tool, but it becomes harmful if you begin wasting
your valuable time. This is the site's biggest disadvantage,
because the loss of your precious time can lead to other

problems.
There are fake profiles and IDs. Now it is easier to create
fake profiles using stolen pictures. People often use fake
profiles to insult or harass someone they don't like.Teen
girls are the most vulnerable to these activities. There have

been several news stories about people, normally students,


who became depressed or suicidal after being harassed on

Facebook.
Too much time on the site has been correlated with bad
grades, or student results. Students who don't study or pay
attention in class do not get good marks in their exams
unless they cheat or are way too smart for the class in the

first place!
People can stalk you and get your personal information. It
is highly recommended not to share your personal

information publicly.
Not only students, but also people working in offices can
waste time on Facebook. That's why many offices have

decided to block the site from their networks completely.


Many people have lost their usernames because their
accounts

were

falsely

reported.

This

is

something

Facebook administrators should be more careful about.


However, you can get your username back with a

TWITTER:
Can be used in a variety of ways including sharing brief
information with users and providing support for ones peers
It was created in 2006 by Jack Dorsey

Advantages:

Twitter is free: Like other social networking sites twitter also


provide free service to users and this is main advantage of
twitter. Now days twitter starts some paid services but they
dont compulsory on users they give freedom to user to choice

services. Twitter is free so anyone can join it freely.


Twitter is easy to join and use: Joining twitter is very easy you
can join twitter within a minute and start tweeting. You can also
start following people from the starting time of joining twitter.

Twitter is free from advertisement and its interface is very

handy to use.
You can use twitter on your smartphones, and twitter apps are

available for every smart phone.


Tweets are very easy to create and by using lots of twitter apps
you can do lots of interesting. Thus twitter has many
advantages which make twitter best.
Disadvantages:

Inactive and fake Twitter accounts: Most of twitter accounts

are fake which are made to cheat and harass someone.


Twitter is addictive: The main disadvantage of twitter is its
addiction. Once you start to use twitter you will get more

involved into twitter.


Limited 140 characters tweet.
Twitter is not more effective for visual content:Twitter is more
link based, if you want share more photos, videos on twitter
then its not more effective like other photo and video sharing
sites.

5. IMPACT OF SOCIAL NETWORKS IN ADOLESCENTS


There is no doubt that today the big businessmen, artists and principal
companies make use of these important and popular social networks, but
include the main users of such networks, adolescents.
Today it is rare that a young person does not have Internet access or do
not use social networks like Facebook, Meseenger, Youtube, etc.
The use of these networks has been created in a vice that has reached
all young people around the world.
For less than a year ago there has been a revolution in the form of
communication of adolescents since, according to a study, 98% use
internet inside and outside the home.
Among internet services most commonly used by young people, instant
messaging is located at the top, followed by online listening to music and
videos, the search for information for study or work and sending,
receiving of emails.
92% of young people use social networks to chat with their Friends

6. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF USING SOCIAL


NETWORKS:
6.1.

Advantage:

It can be used in academic and labor, to exchange various


innovative experiences.
They promote participation and collaborative work between
people, allow users to participate in a project online from
anywhere.
Allow build a personal identity and / or virtual, because they
allow users to share all kinds of information (hobbies, beliefs,
ideologies, etc.) with other people.
Facilitate relationships between people, avoiding all kinds of
both cultural barriers and physical.
Facilitate comprehensive learning outside the classroom, and
can implement the concepts learned.
Social isolation in today's world, interaction via the Internet
allows an individual to show to others. That is, social networks
are an opportunity to show such.
Allows exchange activities, interests, hobbies.
6.2.

Disadvantages:

People with ulterior intentions may invade the privacy of others


causing major problems to it. Security experts say companies for
hackers is very easy to obtain confidential information from its

users.
If not used properly it can become an addiction.
A large number of cases of child pornography and pedophilia have

manifested themselves in different social networks.


Lack of privacy, personal information is shown to the public.

CONCLUSIONS

1. In conclusion, today social networks are the most popular arms to get
ahead in the world and being able to keep in touch wherever we are and
whenever we want.
2. The use of social networks are an excellent resource to bring those far
away, share information, either in the form of text, images or videos.
3. The well used social networks can serve to create communities where
members share information of common interest. But due to the great
success of social networks and the number of users they congregate, are
the focus of attraction for many predators that seek only to take
advantage of unwary or innocent users who publish information that is
used by the cybercriminals.
4. Finally social networks were created to help its users but these should be
regulated and ensure they are not engaged in evil intentions. It must be
the user's obligation to keep such as attached to reality and not make
malicious use of these services networks. Of course, with these services,
everyone is exposed but the user can decide who and who show through
privacy options that offer these services.
