1.0 Introduction
1.1 Meaning of open source software
Open-source software (OSS) is a software that is free to use and which provides the
original source code used to create it so that advanced users can modify it to make it
work better for them. Open source software (OSS) is also refers to software that is
developed, tested, or improved through public collaboration and distributed with the
idea that the must be shared with others, ensuring an open future collaboration. Open
source licenses often meet the requirements of the Open Source Definition. Some
open source software is available within the public domain.
1.2 Meaning of hardware
Hardware consists of the components that do the actual work, everything from
turning the system on to performing specific tasks. There are two types of hardware
components: internal and peripheral. Internal components are the computer parts
located inside the PC tower or the laptop body, and peripherals are located on the
outside of the computer.
1.3 Meaning of Software
Software is the principal component because it contains the information needed by the
hardware to perform its tasks; without the software, a computer would simply be a
box full of parts. The main software component needed to run a computer is the
operating system, and program applications are necessary for specific tasks.

2.0 The Latest Open Source Operating System

2.1 Meaning of open source OS
An operating system (OS) is a set of programs containing instructions that coordinate
all the activities among computer hardware resources. Most of operating system
performs similar function that includes starting a computer, provide a user
interface, managing program, managing memory and configuring devices. Some
operating system also allows users to control a network and administer security.
2.2 Examples of open source OS
2.2.1 Linux
Linux or GNU/Linux is a free and open source software operating system for
computers. The operating system is a collection of the basic instructions that tell the
electronic parts of the computer what to do and how to work. Free and open source
software (FOSS) means that everyone has the freedom to use it, see how it works, and
change it.
There is a lot of software for Linux, and since Linux is open source it means that most
of the software for it is open source and free. This is one of the reasons why some
people like to use Linux.
2.2.2 MINIX
MINIX is a Unix-like computer operating system based on a microkernel architecture
written by Andrew S. Tanenbaum for educational purposes. MINIX (from "miniUnix") was first released in 1987, with its complete source code made available to

3.0 The Latest Open Source Application Software

3.1 Meaning of open source application software
Open source, as its name implies, means providing the software itself, along with the
source code of it, free for distribution, compilation, modification and reuse at no
charge or restriction. Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is
available in source code form for which the source code and certain other rights
normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that
permits users to study, change, and improve the software. Open source software
usually can be downloaded from the Internet, mostly at no cost. Its the kind of
initiative usually and volunteer work, like the Firefox project, and the famous Apache
Foundation. Application software also known as an application is computer software
designed to help the user to perform singular or multiple related specific tasks.
3.2 Examples of open source application software
3.2.1 Open Office
OpenOffice.org 3 is the leading open-source office software suite for word
processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available
in many languages and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an
international open standard format and can also read and write files from other
common office software packages. It can be downloaded and used completely free of
charge for any purpose. OpenOffice.org commonly known as OOo or OpenOffice, is
an open-source software application suite available for a number of different
computer operating systems.
3.2.2 Squirrel Mail

SquirrelMail is a web-based email application started by Nathan and Luke Ehresman.

and written in the PHP scripting language. It can be installed on almost all web
servers as long as PHP is present and the web server has access to an IMAP and
SMTP server. SquirrelMail outputs valid HTML 4.0 for its presentation, making it
compatible with a majority of current web browsers. SquirrelMail uses a plugin
architecture to accommodate additional features around the core application, and over
200 plugins are available on the SquirrelMail website. Licensed under the GNU
General Public License, SquirrelMail is free software. It is currently available in over
50 languages. SquirrelMail is included in the repositories of many major GNU/Linux
distributions and is independently downloaded by tens of thousands of people every
month.

5.0 Pervasive Computing

5.1 Meaning of pervasive computing
Pervasive computing is the most profound technologies are those that disappear. They
weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from
it. It is also called ubiquitous computing. The goal of pervasive computing, which
combines current network technologies with wireless computing, voice recognition,
Internet capability and artificial intelligence, is to create an environment where the
connectivity of devices is embedded in such a way that the connectivity is unobtrusive
and always available.
5.2 Examples of pervasive
Human-computer interaction
Humancomputer interaction (HCI) is the study of interaction between people (users)
and computers. It is often regarded as the intersection of computer science, behavioral
sciences, design and several other fields of study. Interaction between users and
computers occurs at the user interface (or simply interface), which includes both
software and hardware, for example, general-purpose computer peripherals and largescale mechanical systems, such as aircraft and power plants.
Smartphone
A smartphone is a mobile phone offering advanced capabilities, often with PC like
functionality. For some, a smartphone is a phone that runs complete operating system
software providing a standardized interface and platform for application developers.
For others, a smartphone is simply a phone with advanced features like e-mail,
Internet and e-book reader capabilities, and or a built-in full keyboard or external
USB keyboard and VGA connector. In other words, it is a miniature computer that has

improve the software and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms. While
Pervasive Computing is to make our lives easier as it is portable and easy to use. We
can interact with computers easily with pervasive computing. Besides that, we can
