2nd Annual Praise Cafe Honors Men in the Fight Against Breast Cancer
2010 Praise Is the Cure Breast Health Education & Awareness Campaign for Women of Color
Launches with Brunch, Fashion Show, & Celebration on Men in the Community
-Saturday, June 19, 2010, 11:00am to 2:00pm-
(Philadelphia, PA) – May 19, 2010 - The George E. Thorne Development Center kicks off its 2010 Praise
Is the Cure breast health education and awareness campaign with the 2nd Annual Praise Café, to take
place on Saturday, June 19, 2010, 11:00am to 2:00pm, at The Corinthian in Philadelphia, PA. A brunch
event filled with fellowship amongst Praise Is the Cure’s network of breast cancer patients and survivors,
and their families and friends, the Praise Café also serves as a celebration of men who are champions in
the fight against Breast Cancer. This year, GETDC will honor our men who have taken the lead in
educating the community on breast health issues and providing personal support to patients and survivors.
What’s more, GETDC will recognize the graduating 8th graders from Kephra Charter School in Philadelphia
who selected breast cancer as their senior project and, in turn, donated the proceeds from their Pink
Pajama party to the Praise Is the Cure initiative.
WDAS FM’s Doug Henderson will serve as the Mister of Ceremonies, with Reverend Charles W. Quann
from Bethlehem Baptist Church serving as the event’s keynote speaker. Rounding out the event will be a
fashion show presented by Wilch & Wilch Special Event Consultants and featuring Ron Wilch Custom
Clothing, Gwen's Alcove, and designers Ajzha Khan, Joy Lee of Ayo Lee Art & Design, Karen Smith of Hats
by Karen.
Under the tutelage of 11-year breast cancer survivor Anita T. Conner, founder and chair of the George E.
Thorne Development Center, and founder and managing partner of Anita T. Conner & Associates, Certified
Public Accountants & Financial Services, the Praise Is the Cure campaign is focused on recognizing the
difficult journey to wellness made by African American Breast Cancer patients and survivors’ and their
families. Promoting breast cancer outreach and prevention, and to celebrate patients and survivors, the
mission of the Praise Is the Cure initiative is to motivate, educate, and encourage African American
women to get breast cancer screenings and treatment. At last year’s inaugural event, GETDC launched a
“Real Men Wear Pink” initiative designed to educate men in understanding breast health issues and how to
be effective advocates and care giver as loved ones travel the path of recovery and healing from breast
cancer.
"African Americans have the highest death rate from breast cancer of any racial/ethnic group in he U.S.
Every 3 minutes, one woman is diagnosed and every 13 minutes, one woman will die of breast cancer in
the U.S.", says Conner. "The Praise Is the Cure campaign seeks to educate those who do not have
immediate access to the best health care benefits, while transforming women living with this disease into
warriors. We offer an atmosphere of hope, health and healing to survivors, those battling the disease, their
husbands, their children, and their families."
Tickets for the Praise Café are $12 and can be purchased by calling (215) 635.1025.
