Bronze success for Paston

students in Chemistry
Olympiad.
Once again Paston Sixth Form College chemistry students
showed they could
compete at the highest
levels in the 2016
Royal Society of
Chemistry Olympiad.
Two students (Peter
Setchfield and Jamie
Spooner) entered
the competition and
both gained Bronze
certificates. Peter
Setchfield was one
mark off a silver award.
The questions are
so challenging that
scoring any marks at
all is considered an
achievement worthy of
a certificate.
This years questions
ranged from a chemical
system for storing
energy, the chemistry
of tungsten and the
complicated synthesis of a drug. Students have to apply their
skills and knowledge to unusual problems, a skill which the RSC
is keen to develop amongst our A level students and which will
stand them in good stead on the demanding science university
courses Paston students aim for.

Cromer Sea Defence Work

Comes To A Close

Work to help protect Cromer from rising sea levels and potential
storm damage has come to a close more than two years after it
started on site in January 2014.

The 8million pound scheme, carried out by contractors

VolkerStevin, was increased significantly to include repairs
to the sea defences and foreshore infrastructure caused by the
exceptional storm surge of Dec 2013.
With a pause for the summer seasons (end of April to end of
September 2014 and 2015) the focus has been on ensuring
Cromer Promenade, the sea defence foundations, walls and
groynes are strong enough to help protect the town for future
years.

FROM THE EDITOR.

What wonderful weather we have been enjoying

here in North Norfolk
Hopefully the sun will shine on us as we enjoy
the Crab and Lobster festival in Cromer and
Sheringham next weekend
I am heading for the food and fun to be had in
Cromer on Sat 21st, firstly at Evington Lawns just
behind Julios cafe( this excellent cafe supplies the electricity for
the events on Evington Lawns). Full Programme on page 18.
Then on Sunday over to Sheringham for more great locally
sourced food, then to relax and listen to the fabulous Sheringham
Shantymen in the Lobster Pots gardens.
The Art Trail is a great way to explore this area, not just during
the festival but throughout the summer.
The Beach Huts can be found from North Repps Cottage Hotel
to the east of Cromer across to the west side of Sheringham,
Miramar Vets(whose team are competing in Norwich Pretty
Muddy on 14May, raising funds for Cancer Research Uk
check out Miramars Facebook page and get supporting their
marvellous efforts) and many places in between pick up a copy of
the trail at Cromer Information Centre.
Enjoy this wonderful part of England, please send me your
photos of your fun and we will try to reproduce some here in
Crab Tales.
Enjoy your Crabtales.

Liz.

Dear Editor,
I am motivated to write to express my dismay at the Childish and
unhelpful Political wranglings over the forthcoming Brexit Referendum.
Once again our elected officials have descended into self-indulgent
hyperbole leaving the public a mixture of afraid and confused.
I earnestly urge people to read up, attend debates and think about it, it is
important.
For myself when i look at the prospect of Donald Trump in America,
Putin in Russia and Little Kim in North Korea i cant help but feel that
we should stay part of the Europe Gang. I dont think its a good time to
go it alone.
Democracy means we get to vote but how much more is each vote
worth if it is cast by someone who has an informed opinion.

The Cromer Ladies Lifeboat Guild annual

general meeting, held on 12th April 2016,
saw one of its long serving members and
her husband receive prestigious National
Awards in recognition of their long service
and outstanding contribution to RNLI
fundraising.
Retiring Committee Member, Mrs Peggy
Webster, received a Gold Badge certificate
and her husband, Cromer RNLI Station Chairman, Mr Tony Webster, received a Gold
Bar to his Gold Badge certificate. They will receive their Gold Badge and Gold Bar at a
special ceremony in Norwich, in September.
Peggy has been a member of the Guild for 28 years. She was a loyal, supportive
and enthusiastic committee member for many years before taking on roles of greater
responsibility. In 2006 she became Guild Chairman, taking over the role from Mrs
Daisy Spurgeon (now Honorary Life President) and then, on relinquishing her role as
Chairman in 2009, became the Publicity Officer. For several years, Peggy and Tony
hosted summer garden fetes at their home, enabling the Guild to raise further funds for
the RNLI. Although Peggy is now stepping down from her role on the Committee, she
continues to be a member of the Ladies Lifeboat Guild.
Tony has been an active member of the Cromer RNLI Station Crew for many years and
became the Station Chairman in 1978. He has worked tirelessly to ensure the successful
operation of the Cromer Lifeboat, as well as supporting the efforts of the Ladies Guild.
As well as celebrating their golden awards, earlier this year Peggy and Tony also
celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Congratulations were given and they
were wished many more happy years together.
The presentation ceremony was introduced by Mr John Davies, Cromer RNLI Coxswain
and the presentation of an engraved bowl, flowers and certificates were presented by
Mrs Beryl Mansell, Chairman of the Ladies Lifeboat Guild. After thanking the Guild
and the Crew for their support and camaraderie, Peggy invited everyone to help her and
Tony celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary with wine and canapes.

Fun
Children are invited to come and join artist Kirsty OLearyLeeson create Roald Dahl and Illustration inspired artworks at her
Big Friendly Art Club at Cromer and North Walsham Libraries
after school in June and July (dates below). The workshops are
lottery funded with all materials and very importantly squash
and biscuits provided free of charge. Last year Kirsty received
lottery funding to run a variety of local art workshops, and Crab
tales went along to see one that was running at Cromer Junior
school, where artistry, creativity and fun were in full swing; she
is thrilled to have received another grant this year and is working
with the libraries, in conjunction with their Summer reading
challenge, to inspire young people to discover the books of Roald
Dahl and the weird and wonderful creatures and characters that
inhabit them.

Panamania

Written by Miranda Marshall Director at Hayes + Storr

Trusts have received all sorts of bad press over the last few weeks. They have become
emblematic of underhand arrangements designed to deprive HM Treasury of their dues
by those more than able to pay.
Let us examine some of the common misunderstandings.

Trusts are only for the wealthy: Wrong.

Trusts are a way of concealing the true ownership: Ah well, there is more than
a grain of truth in this; but the purpose of setting up a trust is often primarily protective
and is usually with the best intentions.

Trusts are for avoiding tax: Generally, this is not the case. Trusts have their own
tax system which, put simply, often taxes them as severely as the very highest earners. If
the income is paid out to beneficiaries, then usually they can claim back that higher rate
tax so the income they receive is taxed at the same level as their own income.
What is certain is that trusts are complicated and the law behind them is often
misunderstood or poorly grasped, including by financial journalists eager for a quick
headline.
So, why create a trust, if not for nefarious reasons?
The best and most frequent reason is to leave assets, often by Will on death, to children,
the young or financially-immature. This way the funds can be used to help with their
upbringing or education, at the discretion of those with their best interests at heart.
Often, the funds are held back until they reach not just 18 or 21 but more often 25. I
have seen vesting ages of as late as 30, where the parent or grandparent fears for the
child and/or there is much growing up to be done. In the meantime, the trustees can
make payments to or for the benefit of the eventual recipient.
Indeed, trusts can be a way of continuing to exercise control from the grave; but
usually with kind intentions.
Trusts are also a way of making gifts to those who are vulnerable so as to be able to
drip-feed funds to them throughout their life without making them ineligible for state
benefits.
Trusts can be managed so that beneficiaries with drink, drug or other difficulties, which
it is hoped they will in time overcome, can have the funds paid to them when they will
make better use of them.
The main use of trusts in tax planning is to pass assets on, without any reservation of
benefit by the giver, without losing control and without seeing the funds dissipated or
otherwise misused. This means that the gift can be made sooner than otherwise and it is
more likely therefore to pass tax free.
Trusts arose as a legal concept when the Crusaders left their
castles to others to look after whilst they went off to the Holy
Land and in case they didnt come back. Trusts have an
honourable English legal tradition and must continue to do so.
This article aims to supply general information, but it is not
intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure
that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and
to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty
of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for
any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.

RANDELLS FOOTCARE OPENS NEW HEALTHCARE CENTRE IN THE

HEART OF SHERINGHAM.

Completely renovated and equipped to the highest standards the old surgery and solicitors offices on the corner of Augusta Street and
Church Road Sheringham have been transformed by Randells Healthcare into a fantastic new suite of treatment rooms.
Along with employment this new facility will offer much more than just foot-care,
though it must be said Randells have led the way for many years with their seven
clinics successfully sharing their facilities with additional practitioners such as
Osteopaths, now they will provide a truly enhanced range of services.
Randell Footcare have been at the forefront of podiatry services in Norfolk for many
years providing first class foot-care to thousands of people of all ages and differing
problems. As well as routine podiatry they also have specialist skills in sports care,
so much so they keep our local premiership sides feet nice and healthy throughout
the season. But sports podiatry can be more than just foot ailments, in some cases
a specialist assessment from one of their podiatrists can help improve performance
regardless of the sport.
As well as the vast range of foot-care services the new Centre in Sheringham will host
new specialists including an Osteopath helping ease problems with backs, a team of Nurse specialists will have clinics providing
an exciting range of services including Botox treatments and travel support, whereas other practitioners will include Acupuncture,
Reflexology, a Life Coach, Counselling, a Nutritionist, Sports Therapy, a Hypnotherapist, and Holistic Massage with a Bowen
Technique specialist providing their enhanced services. Other therapists
and practitioners will add their skills in the future though at the moment
Randells are particularly seeking a Physiotherapist to join the team.
The new health centre provided by Randells Healthcare is unique in
offering so many services under the one roof and will no doubt enhance the
quality of life for many people in Sheringham and the surrounding area.
Company Director and Podiatrist Steve Randell said Im so thrilled we
are able tobring such a fantastic treatment centre to this wonderful town of
Sheringham and we all look forward to sharing our skills with our service
users. Becky Knowles Randells Business manager said though she has
been rushed off her feet getting everything together she is encouraged that
clinics were filling up fast.
The full range of treatments, services, and merchandise available from the
new centre can be found on their website; www.randellshealthcare.co.ukor

Beaches and inland lakes that attract a large number of bathers can be
designated as bathing waters under the Bathing Water Directive. Water
quality at bathing waters is tested during the bathing season, which in
England runs from 15 May to 30 September.
Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: The district is
very proud of its four Blue Flag beaches at Cromer, Sheringham, Sea
Palling and Mundesley.
The Blue Flag status helps both visitors and locals understand how
clean a beach and its waters are, as well as the high quality of facilities
provided. It is something which is recognised worldwide.
Bathing water designation is one of the crucial steps on the way to
winning Seaside Award status, and then Blue Flag status.
Cllr Sarah Butikofer, ward member for the Runtons, said: This is
fantastic news for local people, local business and visitors. The quality
of the beach warrants the designation, both in terms of its beautiful
visual appeal and in terms of its history. We have coachloads of young
people coming here on regular occasions to learn about the West Runton
Mammoth, the chalk reef and the Cromer Forest Bed.
The application for the designation was formally made by North Norfolk

Oak Class at Northrepps Primary School yesterday

(Tuesday) received certificates for completing the
Pillbox Trail across North Norfolk.
The trail takes in up to 14 First World War pillbox
gun emplacements positioned to defend the UK
from German invasion.
North Norfolk District Council Leader Cllr Tom
FitzPatrick and the Councils Chairman Annie
Claussen-Reynolds congratulated the pupils on
their achievement and gave them their Pillbox
Trail certificates.
Cllr FitzPatrick said: This is such an important
part of our nations and North Norfolks history,
and its great to get young people out and about
walking through history. On this trail you can
really imagine what it might have been like 100
years ago when our coast was threatened by
invasion.
At least 48 pillboxes were known to have been
built in Norfolk during the First World War, of
which 24 currently survive, the majority being in
North Norfolk.
Bethany Ann Waller, 8, who received a certificate,
said: It was really interesting visiting the
pillboxes. The soldiers must have been so brave.
They risked their lives to protect Britain.
The Pillbox Trail forms part of North Norfolks
World War I Centenary Commemorations 20142018 and offers a unique opportunity to visit and
view many of the remaining WWI pillboxes in
North Norfolk.
Cllr Claussen-Reynolds said: Were really
proud of our part in the World War I centenary
commemorations with the Pillbox Trail. These
vital events in history need to be remembered
and understood by new generations and Im so
pleased Oak Class walked the trail and saw North
Norfolks pillboxes and all they mean.

e,

A Walk on the Wild Side!

More Mundesley Mumblings.

Wow, we did it. We actually had a bank holiday weekend and managed almost all of it dry. And we even sneaked in some sunshine.
Amazing. I am sure I am not the only person who has welcomed at last a little warmth in the spring sunshine. Though we have had
our fair share of sun it has been down right chilly. The beach walks have been spectacular though. This weekend was marked by the
fact I saw more snakes in 2 days than I have seen in years. Saturday saw us walking around Holt country park and seeing not 1 but 2
Adders. An indigenous snake that I have to confess never having seen in real life.
On Bank holiday Monday however the prodigal son, husband and I ventured out to Martham to visit the Scarecrow festival and
village fair, and well I can only say it was a resounding success. Bravo to the organisers it was absolutely brilliant. The pics show
our son gingerly holding a 14-year-old female Boa Constrictor (it had definitely been fed as it had a bulge half way down!) which was
surprisingly docile. Thankfully the snake did not seem phased by being held by a Tiger. It is lovely to watch your child turn into a
real little monster right before your eyes. But back to the festival. There were all sorts of stalls, and even a fun fair. Along with the
de rigour tombolas which meant we dragged yet more soft toys home to add to the growing zoo we already have, but my real ale
drinking husband was gutted that all he won was a bottle of lager. Maybe the powers that be were telling him something? If nothing
else, it was worth the leg pull! The range of handy crafts, and also animal shelters was wide and varied. We got to stroke a tiny Fox
cub that had been rescued, a baby Hedgehog, and along with the Boa, there was an Owl, a Tortoise, a Crow amongst others, all we
needed was a pussy cat and a pea green boat! Not only that but we even managed to have the first Bar-B-Que of the year, and the
weather is set to turn positively balmy. There is something positively English about stoically sitting in the garden in various fleeces
and cardigans, stubbornly waiting for the food to cook. It was only when I realised that even the dog had given up the ghost and
gone indoors, and not even the promise of a sausage was enough to keep her out in the wind and cold. We struggled on until the wind
picked up and even the salad was being tossed out of the bowl. Never mind, we will get there.
However, I know its nearly summer when the harbinger of the summer months is the first roll up of the year at the bowls club in
Mundesley. This year it was a perfect afternoon, and the season is now in full swing. My mum has now joined the Bowls season
widows, though secretly it gives her a chance to do some things on her own but dont tell my Dad! There is something very
soothing about the sound of the players ribbing each other, the clack of the bowls every now and then. One of those sights and sounds
that takes me back to pass times of when I was a child, and even memories of village cricket, though that was marred by my uncle
batting splendidly and only spoiled by the fact I got whacked in the head by the cricket ball. Probably explains many things..
Looking ahead we now have the tourist
season starting in earnest and festivals
and events taking place all over the area.
Great news for us locals as we get to
take advantage of it all on our doorstep,
I wonder what adventures will be in
store for usOh and by the way
apparently Tigers drink the juice of a
thousand worms, something I was not
aware of and I am not really sure I had zoo
keeper added to my parenting CV! One

LORNE GREEN ELECTED

NORFOLK CRIME
COMMISSIONER.
Norfolk science fiction fans were
delighted to hear that Lorne Green had
been elected Norfolks next Police and
Crime Commissioner. With Commander
Adamma from Battlestar Galactica at the
helm Norfolk residents could feel safer
from criminals and Cylons.
Sadly it turns out that Lorne Green died
in 1987, quite aside from the fact that he
never expressed any interest in Norfolk
Politics.

One of these is Lorne Green our

new Crime Commissioner

LOCAL SCULPTOR GIVES FREE

DEMONSTRATION.

Lesley Ash, the fantastic local Sculptor is giving a demonstration

of her techniques at St Margarets Church Thorpe Market on
Bank Holiday Monday, 30th May between two and four in the
afternoon.
Lesleys work involves clay or wood carving created from life
or photographs - clay projects are often moulded then cast in
bronze, iron, copper.
Lesley works in clay then makes a silicon mould and casts it in
a metal/resin mix that shines up just like bronze but at a tenth of
the cost.
Lesley likes to
sculpt children and
dogs and has done
dog portraits for
owners who have
already lost their
loved pets (from
photographs) and
others who think
of immortalising
their pets before the
inevitable happens.
On bank holiday she
will be modelling
a greyhound to
showcase her
methods and
techniques.

2016 ART TRAIL

The Art Trail is an annual event that uses an art theme to create
a journey of discovery in the Cromer and Sheringham area. This
Years theme is Beach Huts.
Around a hundred hand crafted miniature Beach Huts are
located at many of the most iconic local points of interest. Open
the doors and reveal the art as well as see much of whats best
about our lovely area.
The organisors tell us, This year were delighted to have
teamed up with wonderful local charity About With
Friends who will be hand-crafting our specially designed
beach huts in their Cromer workshop. This active and
energetic charity supports people with learning disabilities
and, as well as the workshop, they also offer gardening
and catering services, and run a super community cafe

Our sample hut has been decorated inside with a deep sea
diving theme, and were looking forward to seeing what our
local artists & creatives can do with these superb little huts...
just the right size to hang as a small wall cupboard at home!
Trail starts at Easter, there may be 100 huts to spot....a great
way to explore our towns & surrounding areas.
Leaflets will be available from Tourist Information Centres &
many places around town.
