One of the biggest symbols of Halloween, the jack-o-lantern, is associated with

Irish tradition.
This comes from the Irish belief, a long ago time, there was a rascal of a fellow
named Jack who had the audacity to trick the very devil himself.
It is said that Jack played a trick on the devil by enticing him up into a tree,
then carving the sign of the cross in the tree so that the devil could not get
down.
In exchange for removing the sign the devil had to promise not to come after
Jack's soul.
Well, the devil kept his promise, but it did not prevent Jack from eventually
dying. Because Jack had been a stingy miserly drunkard in his life he was not
admitted into heaven.
Desperate for a place to rest his soul, Jack appealed to the devil to let him
reside in Hell. But, because Jack had tricked the devil, the devil would not let
Jack into Hell.
Instead, Jack was condemned to run the earth forever, searching for an eternal
resting place.
The devil gave Jack a candle, which Jack put into the turnip he was eating.
From that day on he has roamed the earth, with his lantern, looking for that
place to rest. And, that is how we got the modern day Jack-O-Lantern.

Uno de los mayores smbolos de Halloween, Jack-o-lantern est asociada con

la tradicin irlandesa.
Esto segn algunas historias de Irlanda, hace mucho tiempo hubo una vez, un
bribn llamado Jack que tuvo la osada de engaar al mismo diablo en
persona.
Se dice que Jack jug una mala pasada al diablo incitndolo a subir a un rbol,
para despus tallar en el rbol la seal de la cruz con el objetivo de que el
diablo no pueda bajar de ella.
Y a cambio de que retirara la seal, el diablo tuvo que prometer no tomar el
alma de Jack despus lo ocurrido.
Bueno, el diablo cumpli su promesa, pero eso no impidi que Jack muriera
eventualmente. Debido a que Jack haba sido un borracho, miserable y tacao
en toda su vida, no fue admitido en el cielo.
Desesperado por un lugar para descansar su alma, Jack le pidi al diablo que le
permitiera vivir en el Infierno. Pero, porque Jack le haba engaado en el
pasado, el diablo no permiti que Jack ingresara al infierno.
En su lugar, Jack fue condenado a recorrer la tierra para siempre, en busca de
un lugar de descanso eterno.
El diablo le dio a Jack una vela, el cual puso dentro el nabo que estaba
comiendo.
Desde ese da ha vagado la tierra, con su linterna, buscando ese lugar para
descansar. Y as es como en la actualidad tenemos al moderno Jack-O-Lantern.

The Trojan War was fought over Helen, who according to legend was the
beautiful daughter of Zeus and the wife of the king of the Greek polis of
Sparta.
The war began after a Trojan prince named Paris kidnapped Helen.
According to the Odyssey, the Trojan War ended when the Greeks pretended to
give up their quest for Helen.
The Greeks left a huge wooden horse as a peace offering to the Trojans. The
Greek navy pretended to sail away, but they only sailed out to a hidden
location.
The joyous Trojans opened the city gates and pulled in the giant statue.
After a great victory celebration of their defeat of the Greek army, the people
of Troy slept for the night. As the Trojans slept, Greek soldiers emerged from
their hiding place inside the wooden horse, opened the city gates, and began
to burn the sleeping city.

La guerra de Troya se libr por Helena, que segn la leyenda era la hermosa
hija de Zeus y la esposa del rey de la polis griega de Esparta.
La guerra comenz despus de que un prncipe troyano llamado Paris
secuestrara a Helena.
Segn la Odisea, la guerra de Troya termin cuando los griegos fingieron
renunciar a la bsqueda de Helena.
Los griegos dejaron un enorme caballo de madera como ofrenda de paz a los
troyanos. La armada griega fingi navegar lejos, pero slo navegaron a un
lugar oculto.
Los troyanos contentos abrieron las puertas de la ciudad y metieron arrastras
la gigante estatua.
Despus de una gran celebracin por la victoria y por derrota del ejrcito
griego, el pueblo de Troya se puso a dormir por la noche. Tan pronto como los
troyanos empezaron a dormir, los soldados griegos salieron de su escondite del
caballo de madera, abrieron las puertas de la ciudad y comenzaron a quemar
toda la ciudad dormida.
