SECTION-A
1. Answer all parts. All parts carry equal marks.
(210=20)
(105=50)
2. Using Thevenins theorem find the potential drop across terminals A & B.
3. What is series resonance? Explain the concepts of bandwidth & quality factor in AC circuits. Derive
expressions for lower and upper half power frequencies for an RLC series circuit.
4. A series ac circuit has a resistance of 15 and inductive reactance of 10. Calculate the value of a
capacitor which is connected across this series combination so that system has unity power factor. The
frequency of ac supply is 50 Hz.
5. Describe the construction and working principle of PMMC type instrument with suitable diagram and
also write its merits and demerits.
6. A balanced delta connected inductive load is connected to a 440 V, 50 Hz ac supply. Two wattmeters
used to measure supply power indicate 8 kW and 4 kW respectively. Determine: line current, impedance
of each phase, power factor, resistance & inductance of each phase.
7. Explain single phase auto-transformer and give its applications. Show that the weight of copper
required for auto-transformer is less than that of two-winding transformer of same rating. Also write its
merits and demerits.
8. A 250 V dc shunt machine has line current of 80 A. It has armature and field resistances of 0.1 &
125 respectively. Calculate power developed in armature when running as (a) generator, (b) motor.
9. Single phase induction motor is not self-starting. Why? What are the various starting methods of single
phase induction motor? Explain any one with suitable circuit and phasor diagram.
