SECTION-A
1. Answer all parts. All parts carry equal marks.

a) Differentiate between active and passive elements with examples.


b) State Thevenins theorem and Nortons theorem.
c) Prove that the average power consumption in a pure capacitor is zero when ac voltage is applied.
d) What is meant by voltage magnification in a RLC series circuit?
e) Two wattmeter methods for 3-phase power measurement is universal one. Why?
f) Define the various electrical safety issues.
g) Define: mmf, magnetic field intensity, permeability, fringing.
h) Explain the condition for maximum efficiency in a single phase transformer.
i)

3-phase induction motor is also called asynchronous motor. Why?

j) Write the applications of synchronous motor.


SECTION-B
Note: Attempt any five questions from this section:

2. Using Thevenins theorem find the potential drop across terminals A & B.

3. What is series resonance? Explain the concepts of bandwidth & quality factor in AC circuits. Derive
expressions for lower and upper half power frequencies for an RLC series circuit.

4. A series ac circuit has a resistance of 15 and inductive reactance of 10. Calculate the value of a
capacitor which is connected across this series combination so that system has unity power factor. The
frequency of ac supply is 50 Hz.
5. Describe the construction and working principle of PMMC type instrument with suitable diagram and
also write its merits and demerits.
6. A balanced delta connected inductive load is connected to a 440 V, 50 Hz ac supply. Two wattmeters
used to measure supply power indicate 8 kW and 4 kW respectively. Determine: line current, impedance
of each phase, power factor, resistance & inductance of each phase.
7. Explain single phase auto-transformer and give its applications. Show that the weight of copper
required for auto-transformer is less than that of two-winding transformer of same rating. Also write its
merits and demerits.
8. A 250 V dc shunt machine has line current of 80 A. It has armature and field resistances of 0.1 &
125 respectively. Calculate power developed in armature when running as (a) generator, (b) motor.
9. Single phase induction motor is not self-starting. Why? What are the various starting methods of single
phase induction motor? Explain any one with suitable circuit and phasor diagram.

SECTION-C
Note: Attempt any two questions from this section:

10. Attempt all the parts


a) State and explain the maximum power transfer theorem. Also derive the expression of maximum
power.
b) Find average value, rms value, form factor and peak factor of half-wave rectified alternating
current.
11. Attempt all the parts
a) Compare between electrical circuit and magnetic circuit.
b) A 200 kVA transformer has an efficiency of 98% at full load. If the maximum efficiency occurs
at three quarters of full load, calculate the efficiency at half load. Assume negligible magnetizing
current and power factor of 0.8 at all loads.
12. Attempt all the parts
a) Sketch and explain the various characteristics of dc series motor and dc shunt motor; also give
their applications.
b) A 3-phase, 50 Hz induction motor has a full load speed of 960 rpm. Calculate: slip, frequency of
rotor induced emf, number of poles, speed of rotor field w.r.t. rotor structure, speed of rotor field
w.r.t. stator field.
