ESL010
English for Speakers of Other Languages I: Basic

2. Description: ESL010 introduces the literate non-native speaker of English to the four skills, reading, writing,
speaking and understanding spoken English, to develop a basic command of Standard American English.
3. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students are able to do the following:
Writing and Grammar

Write a variety of simple sentences and demonstrate some ability to combine them through
coordination.

Use relative clauses and other more common dependent clauses.

Structure a basic paragraph.

Identify and describe the basic elements of plagiarism.


Speaking and Listening

Comprehend carefully spoken classroom English with frequent repetition or clarification.

Express ideas about familiar topics in Standard American English.


Reading and Vocabulary

Read simple texts in English with the aid of a dictionary and clarification by an instructor.

Comprehend and use a vocabulary with a range adequate to writing, reading, speaking, or listening
tasks at a high elementary level.
Other

Demonstrate knowledge and use of College resources such as the library, the Internet, computer
assisted instruction, the Tutoring Center, the Advising and Counseling Center, and the Reading and
Writing Resource Center.

Format and save written work using a computer.

8. Suggested General Guidelines for Evaluation: Students are evaluated on their speaking, reading
comprehension, writing, and understanding of spoken English. Quizzes, writing assignments, pronunciation
exercises, class participation, and exams are evaluated to determine the students final grade.
Students must complete the course with a letter grade of C or better. Letter grades of A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, are
awarded to students who pass the course requirements and are ready for the next level of studies. There are no
C-, D+, D, or D- grades in Developmental Reading and Writing Courses. Students may select the letter grade P
(Pass) rather than the A-C letters. The letter grade of R (Repeat) is earned by students who have made
progress, but are not ready for the next level of studies. The letter grade of F is earned by students who do not
turn in assignments, do not attend class, do not participate in classroom activities, or do not demonstrate
application, motivation, or appropriate collegiate behavior.
9. General Topical Outline (Optional): This course provides the student who is literate in his/her native language
the opportunity to develop those skills in Standard American English, American structures, syntax, and
organization. The content of the course varies widely in response to student needs.
