When the Emperors Trajan and Hadrian waged war against the Dacian Kingdoms, their
legionaries were repeatedly routed by the devastating charges of the Sarmatian cataphracts.
Hadrian responded by creating the first Roman heavy cavalry, the cataphracts, on the model
of their Dacian and middle-eastern foes. These squadrons of heavy cavalry proved to be a
great success and became a regular feature of Roman warfare.
