clients: How do I get around New Jerseys estate taxes?
The tax, paid by inheritors on an estate valued at
more than $675,000, has been cited by legislators and
tax advocates as a driver thats pushing people out of
the state. And its easily avoided by buying a condo in
tax-friendly Florida and moving there for exactly six
months and one day.
Id never encourage a client to move to save on taxes, but a lot of clients feel like theyre being asked to
leave the state when they reach a certain point in time,
said Oujo, an accountant and financial adviser based in
Wall. Its idiotic for New Jersey. Its stupid.
Its the last week of the fiscal year, and state lawmakers are scrambling to pass dozens of bills, including a
$34.8 billion budget and a proposed minimum wage
hike. But none is more of a sticking point than the historic tax realignment proposed by Sens. Paul Sarlo, DBergen, and Steve Oroho, R-Sussex, notably including a
four-year phaseout of the estate tax.

No one can legally possess a firearm in New Jersey like the Sig Sauer MCX that killer Omar Mateen
used to gun down 49 people in Orlando.
Gun laws in New Jersey are among the tightest in
the nation, gun deaths are low, and high-profile mass
shootings have been virtually nonexistent.
Dozens of other states allow what gun control advocates call military-style assault weapons and Second Amendment advocates call sporting rifles.
Do we really need the rapid-fire semiautomatic ri-

fles originally designed for the battlefield?

Or should the federal government revisit a ban on
those guns that expired in 2004, enacting a ban like
the one in New Jersey? Will banning semiautomatic
rifles reduce mass shootings?
Major gun law reforms in Australia enacted 20
years ago have eliminated fatal mass shootings
there, according to a study published Wednesday in
the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Clinging jellyfish:
New problem with
no easy answers
RUSS ZIMMER @RUSSZIMMER

As the old saying goes: To fix any problem, you must

first understand it.
To that end, state officials have announced plans to
study the clinging jellyfish, the tiny invertebrate with a
powerful sting that has invaded the Shrewsbury River
and possibly the Navesink River and Barnegat Bay as
well.
The clinging jellyfish is a species that is new to the
Shores rivers and bays. Its arrival is being met with
unease by residents and scientists.
A 20-year-old Middletown man was stung on his side
while swimming in the Shrewsbury River in Oceanport
two weeks ago. He ended up in the hospital for nearly
three days, telling the Asbury Park Press that a morphine injection really only took the edge off.
Most sightings of the clinging jellyfish have been in
the Shrewsbury, but the initial specimen was fished out
