BUTLER-COTE 500 SPECIFICATIONS

1. SCOPE
A. This specification for the Butler-Cote 500
finish system covers the preparation, coating
and physical characteristics for the factory
applied exterior surface finish.

II. SUBSTRATE
PREPARATION
A.G-90 hot-dipped galvanized steel shall
be given a controlled chemical conversion
treatment.

III. COATING
A.The material for Butler-Cote 500 system
coatings shall be Fluoropon, a full-strength
70% fluoropolymer (Kynar 500 or
Hylar 5000) finish.
B. After preparation of the steel, the exposed
exterior surface shall be precision coated
with primer and Fluoropon color coat
to a dry film thickness of 0.9 mil minimum.
C.Exposed interior surfaces shall be coated
with polyester color coat.
D.All coatings to be applied to entire material
dimension of steel sheet prior to forming
of panels.

1V. PHYSICAL
CHARACTERISTICS
A.The physical characteristics of the exterior
coating shall provide resistance to failure
through cracking, checking, peeling or loss of
adhesion by the following laboratory weather
simulating tests:
1.Humidity Resistance at 1000 F. and 100%
R.H. in accordance with ASTM D 2247.
2.Salt Spray Resistance at 5% Salt Fog per
ASTM B 117.
3.Reverse Impact Resistance in accordance
with ASTM D 2794.
4.Resistance to Accelerated Weathering-in
an Atlas Model XW-R Dew Cycle WeatherOmeter in accordance with ASTM D 3361.
5.Resistance to Dry Heat.

6.Abrasion Resistance in accordance with

ASTM D 968.
7.Pollution Resistance in accordance with
ASTM D 1308 using 10% hydrochloric acid.
B. Gloss of finish shall be maintained evenly
over entire surface in accordance with
ASTM D 523, 85 degree geometry.

The standard exterior paint coating for

all Butler panels and trim is the Butler-Cote
500 system, consisting of a Kynar 500 or
Hylar 5000 coating.
The Butler-Cote 500 system resists the
chalking and fading that often leaves a building
looking drab and dated. Our 20-year warranty
guarantees that, on roof and wall panels,
chalking will not exceed a rating of #8 and
fading will not exceed 5 E color difference units.
This 20-year warranty also protects against

blistering, peeling, cracks or chipping of the

paint coating.
While many manufacturers claim to
offer a 20-year warranty, such warranties
are often prorated after a certain time
frame. Our Butler-Cote 500 roof and wall
panel warranty lasts a full 20 years with no
prorating while adhering to high
performance standards.
