    PedagogicalContentKnowledge
    Howdoyourepresenttheideasofasubjectandthewaystheyareconnectedwithoneanother
    sothatstudentsdonotfallintooneofthethreepathologiesoflearning:amnesia,fantasia,and
    inertia?Amnesiaisforgetting.Itoccurswheninformationhasnotbeenlearnedinmemorable,
    useableways.Fantasiaoccurswhenstudentsendupwithamisconceptionorasetof
    misconceptionsabouttheideastaughttheyhaveadistortedgraspofaconcept.Inertiaisthe
    absenceoftransfer,wherestudentsunderstandtheideas,butcannotapplythemoutsideofthe
    immediatecontextinwhichtheylearnedthem(Shulman,2001).(179)

    mylastcouplesessionreflections.IfoundanarticlebyLeeS.Shulmanthattakesadeeperlook
    atfantasia.Thearticlealsointroducesapathologythatwasntmentionedamongtheotherthree
    inthetext,nostalgia.
    TakingLearningSeriously
    InthesectionregardingfantasiaShulmanadmits,
    I'msureIhaveexperiencedfantasiaasa
    learner.However,perhapsIhaveyettobeenlightenedonmymisconceptions,andthatis
    exactlythethoughtthatIstrugglewith.WhatifIamneverenlightenedonsuchmisconceptions?
    Irealizedwhyitissoimportanttogainperspective,asastudentbutthensharethat
    perspective.IfwedontshareourperspectiveIdontknowofanyotherchanceforclarityor
    enlightenment.Whichgoesbacktocreatingasafeclassroomenvironment(Session6The
    ClassroomMosaic:CultureandLearning[CaringEnvironmentsandPersonalConnections])if
    studentsarenotcomfortabletheywillnotsharetheirperspective,notinawaythatdeeply
    allowsfortheteachertopourintothelearnertoshapewhattheyareabletobringoutas
    accurate.Ifeellikethesepathologiesaresoliveandpresentineducation,andthisparticular
    one,fantasia,reallyresignatedwithmebecauseofmypassionforrelationshipsand
    environments.IseethatasaplacewhereIcandirectlystepinandperhapsreducethe
    occurrenceofthispathologyamongmystudents.
