Question 1

(3 Marks)

Choose the most appropriate answer from the following:

1- A hydraulic jump ensures :
(a) Change of subcritical flow to super critical flow
(b) Change of super critical flow to subcritical flow
(c) Change of subcritical flow to critical flow
(d) Change of super critical flow to critical flow
2- In a design of a canal, falls are provided :
(a) when ground slope is steeper than the canal bed slope
(b) to dissipate the energy
(c) when the canal bed slope is steeper than the ground slope
(d) to reduce hydraulic losses
3- The most ideal condition for energy dissipation in the design of spillways is
the one, when:
(a) The tail water rating curve lies above the jump rating curve at all discharges
(b) The tail water rating curve coincides with the jump rating curve at all
discharges
(c) The tail water rating curve lies below the jump rating curve at all discharges
(d) The tail water rating curve either lies above or below the jump rating curve,
depending upon the discharges
4- A cross regulator helps in:
(a) Increasing supply in the parent channel downstream
(b) increasing supply in the off taking channel
(c) increasing water depth in the parent canal, upstream
(d) both (b) and (c)
(e) all (a), (b) and (c) above
5- If y1 and y2 are river water depths upstream and downstream of a hydraulic
jump respectively, the loss of energy due to hydraulic jump is:
(a) (y2 - y1)3/4y1y2
(b) (y2 - y1)4/4y1y2
(c) (y2 - y1)2/4y1y2
(d) (y2 - y1) /4y1y2
6- The irrigation structure which is constructed at the crossing of a canal and a
drain, to avoid the mixing of their respective discharges, is:
(a) an aqueduct
(b) a super passage
(c) a level crossing
(d) both (a) and (b)
(e) (a), (b) and (c) all.

and give an example with sketch from each type:
Energy Dissipation Structures
Flow Measurement Structures

B.

12 m3/sec. of water per meter of width flows down a spillway onto a

horizontal floor and the velocity is 20 m/sec, determine the following:
a- the D/S depth required to cause a hydraulic jump
b- the loss in energy head
c- the losses in power by the jump per meter of width

Question 3
A.

(4 Marks)

State the major functions of the following:

- a canal head regulator

- Full supply level in distributary on U/S of the outlet = 200 m
- Full supply level in water course on the D/S side of the outlet = 199.90 m
- Full supply depth in distributary on the U/S side of the outlet = 1.10 m
(Assume Cd = 0.80)
