Colloquium

Colloquium for Young Engineers

This colloquium offers young engineers the opportunity to present
interesting projects from university, research or construction practice to an audience of fellow engineers from the civil engineering
sector. It provides attendees with an overview of current research
topics as well as challenging construction projects and is an excellent platform to share experiences among young and old.

Message from the President of IABSE

Prof. David Nethercot
In our electronic and digital age we sometimes forget the importance of personal
interaction, gathering together to share
experiences, to learn, to be inspired and
to make new friendships. The most successful gatherings usually involve people
with common interests and a shared purpose. Hamburgs Young Engineers event,
the 3rd of its type to be held in Germany
and which I am delighted to see is a collaborative effort with the Danish Group of IABSE, represents just such an opportunity for the new
generation of Structural Engineers. Those who have already committed should feel a little smug at having made a wise investment,
those in doubt should decide that participation will be both enjoyable and rewarding and those who have, thus far, not thought that
attending was for them should reverse that view so that they do not
regret having missed what, on past performance, promises to be a
splendid opportunity for personal development, technical updating
and fun. April 1st 2016 will soon be here.

Message from the Chair of the Danish

Group of IABSE, Henning Schultz

Keynote Ian Firth

On 1st April 2016 the German and the

Danish National Group of IABSE will be
the joint hosts of a colloquium aimed at
young engineers. The German National
Group has successfully arranged similar
events in 2014 and 2015. The 2016
Young Engineers Colloquium (YEC) will
mark the first time that such an event is
co-organized by two individual countries and the Danish National
Group is proud to be part of this initiative. The 2016 YEC builds on
the long history of trade and collaboration between Germany and
Denmark and on the strong common engineering tradition. Offering
a unique opportunity for young professionals to meet and exchange
ideas across borders, the initiative truly reflects the international
spirit of IABSE. Students, young engineers and experienced professionals, who act as mentors and beacons of our profession, are
warmly welcomed to participate actively in an inspiring day which
will serve as an introduction to the vibrant community of IABSE and
its activities.

We are pleased to present Ian Firth from

the UK as our keynote speaker for the
event. Ian is a distinguished engineer
and true visionary, who has been responsible for some of the most challenging
and most iconic bridge designs in the
world. He is the Chief Operating Officer of Flint and Neill (a COWI Company), a large structural engineering concultancy firm based in London. Ian is the
Chair of the British Group of IABSE and
he has contributed to IABSE through involvement in committees, many contributions to conferences and,
perhaps most notably, the organisation of the IABSE Symposium in
London in 2011. In his keynote, Ian will present some of his bridge
work and address the important role of structural engineers in todays developing world.

Message from the Chair of the German

Group of IABSE, Prof. Guido Morgenthal
Following the success of our first two
Young Engineers Colloquia we are turning
the event into an international format for
2016. I am very excited that the Danish
Group of IABSE has agreed to act as
co-host, making this a platform for young
engineers from both countries and beyond
to exchange ideas, to network and to have
fun in true IABSE style! It is a pleasure
to invite you to the city of Hamburg and I hope that many young
engineers from practice and from academia will contribute to the
success of the colloquium by submitting contributions about their
work. I look forward to an exciting day in Hamburg!
