Overview of Lesson
In this English Language Arts lesson about parts of speech, the students will learn about
three of the main parts of speech including: nouns, verbs, and adjectives. The teacher
will begin by introducing the definitions of a noun, a verb, and an adjective. This
knowledge will be utilized in a class mystery object activity which involves identifying
verbs and adjective that describe a noun (an object). Then, the students will create a
personal word collage with various kinds of paper. The students will have the opportunity
to share their creations and review the meanings of these three parts of speech.

VII. Preparation
Resources
1. Romberg, J (2002). Hooked on Art. New Jersey: Prentice Hall. A Collage, p.64-65.
Materials
1. Bag
2. Items from home or school
3. Cardboard/Cardstock/Thick paper
4. Assortment of paper (tissue paper, colored construction paper, paper confetti,
scrapbook paper, etc.)
5. Colored paper strips
6. Glue
7. Colored Markers
VIII. Motivation/Introduction
1. The teacher will introduce the lesson by defining the three parts of speech that
will be discussed: noun, verb, and adjective. The teacher will bring a bag of
mystery objects, such as a stuffed animal, a piece of fruit, a book, etc., for the
students to describe. Then, the teacher will pull one object out of the bag to be
discussed. The teacher will ask for the students to identify verbs and adjectives
that could be used to describe the object (noun).
2. The students will look at the object (polar bear stuffed animal) and identify verbs
that the noun may perform (run, sit, swim), and adjectives to describe the noun
(white, fluffy, soft).
3. The teacher will then ask the students to collectively create a sentence using the
noun (the object), one verb, and one adjective that was identified.
4. The students will select one verb and one adjective that described the noun to use
in a sentence.
5. The teacher may complete this activity with a few of the objects before
proceeding to the main activity to ensure the students are able to identify
examples of each part of speech.
IX. Instruction/Procedures/ (separate Artwork Example)
1. After having completed the mystery item activity, the teacher will ask the
students to apply their understanding of nouns, verbs, and adjectives to their own
lives. The teacher will ask the students to brainstorm 2 nouns, 2 verbs, and 2
adjectives they would chose to describe themselves.
2. The students will brainstorm a list of 2 nouns, 2 verbs, and 2 adjectives that
describe themselves, to use for the activity. For example, a student may select a
soccer ball (noun), run (verb), and athletic (adjective) to use as 3 of their 6 words.
3. After having selected their words, the teacher will explain how to create their

collage. The teacher will provide each of the students with a piece of cardboard,
cardstock, or any kind of thick piece of paper on which their collage will be
created. The teacher will then ask for the students to select an arrangement of
paper (tissue paper, scrapbook paper, construction paper) to use to create a
collage for their background. The teacher will then explain that the paper should
be torn into strips of varying sizes and arranged to look like a mixture of textures.
The teacher will state that the students may begin gluing as they arrange their
paper.
The students will select the assortment of paper they will use to create their
background. The students will tear the various types of paper to create a
background of diverse textures. As the students arrange their paper, they may
begin gluing the pieces onto the background.
After having completed their paper collage, the teacher will explain how to
incorporate their 6 words into their creations. The teacher will ask the students to
select 3 different colored strips to associate with each different part of speech. For
example, nouns are green, verbs are blue, and adjectives are purple. After having
selected the colored strips, the teacher will explain that each of their 6 words
should be written on one strip of paper.
The students will select their 3 different colored strips to associate with each of
the 3 parts of speech. Then, the students will write each of their 6 words on the
colored strip of paper that identifies with the part of speech of each word.
The teacher will then state that the students will decide how to arrange their
words in their collage to appear as if they are a part of the paper collage.
The students will place their word strips within their collage and glue them into
their places.

X.
Closure
1. After all of the students have finished completing their collages, the teacher will
give the students the opportunity to share their creations with other students
nearby.
2. The students will share their collages with their neighbors and discuss the words
they selected.
3. The teacher will ask the students to finish sharing with the person they are talking
to in order to discuss the three parts of speech as a class. The teacher will ask for
volunteers to share examples of nouns, verbs, and adjectives that the students
chose to include in their collages.
4. The students will share examples of nouns, verbs, and adjectives that are featured
in their collages.
